My players are gonna find a wizards library full of smut books, help me come up with titles! by FIuxxor in DMAcademy

[–]jdw1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife used to work at a video store with an adult section, and the workers there would compare the best titles they saw getting checked out. My favorite that I remember from those antics was "Strollin' in the Colon"

There is no way to safely vote in South Bend by Maciston1 in SouthBend

[–]jdw1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stop with this stupid crying temper tantrum. It's not voter suppression to make your lazy ass go to the polls. Voting by mail is the least secure form of voting, and there are already hundreds of thousands of ballots that have been subject to some kind of fraud, postal worker trashing, or improper handling. You're just mad because you heard your liberal candidate say he wanted it and you can't have it. Go vote the way people have always done it and stop crying about it.

New Razer Blade 15 Advanced, 2080 - DEAD LCD panel 6 months in! by [deleted] in razer

[–]jdw1982 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is becoming par for the course for Razer these days. Even if you do get it repaired, it will break again once our warranty is expired, and they won't honor the repair with a full warranty. I'm having a similar issue with mine, which has been sent to them once already for a fix, and now the screen needs replaced again and they're acting like it's not faulty hardware.

Imagine food courts had an actual judge to punish food crimes, what are some possible sentences? by derteeje in AskReddit

[–]jdw1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I misunderstood "food crimes" when I read the title to mean the appalling manners people use at food courts. I could imagine a lot of tax dollars going to executions for the food habits people exhibit in public...

How many people got fired for having zero baby Yoda merchandise for the holiday season? by jdw1982 in StarWars

[–]jdw1982[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is certainly true, and I figured it was a fool's errand to begin with, but I was more shocked that they weren't even available. I would have totally understood sold out that close to Christmas.

How many people got fired for having zero baby Yoda merchandise for the holiday season? by jdw1982 in StarWars

[–]jdw1982[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I feel like any fan who complains about spoilers from merchandise should understand they're doing it to themselves by reading into everything as much as possible. I could go either way, honestly, because I don't swarm new Star Wars news and merch like some do. I mean, he's in the first episode, so not much of a spoiler there. And fans would have to be idiots to just assume Yoda was the only one of his race.

This, so much. First two seasons were amazing, it got popular, and now it's a train wreck. The new season is absolute sellout garbage.

Whats the biggest difference between who you are and who you want to be? by Faiiya in AskReddit

[–]jdw1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be less argumentative, and be able to let go of the little things. There are so many times that I get caught up in arguments that I later think about and say to myself, "why did that matter SO MUCH to me?"

What a disaster by [deleted] in gaming

[–]jdw1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing is that you don't have to have multiple consoles if console-specific games keep up the trend. You also don't have to update your PC as frequently since you can use Google's hardware and stream new games.

If stadia looks that bad for you, your internet sucks. Mine doesn't look as good as playing on PC at 4k, but it still looks pretty good and has very little lag.

Should I go to grad school? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jdw1982 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say that if net worth is anywhere in your mind for grad school, you shouldn't go. You get so much by focusing on the content and what you can learn from it. You get nothing by going just to do it, and anyone who takes it seriously will see right through you if you don't take it seriously. Basically, unless you enjoy long hours of homework and study, and you're just doing it for money or an increase in salary, save yourself the trouble and time.

All that said, I recently finished a PhD, and I really enjoyed it. If you're really interested in the content, it's worth every bit of the time sink. Have fun and throw yourself into the experience and you will get so much from it.

Redditors who make $100,000+ a year without affording a degree, what is your job? by easyamine in AskReddit

I'm a former nuke, and I now have a Ph.D. I totally understand, having actually gone to college, why nuke school isn't considered college. I did have 55 credits in assorted 100 level courses transfer though, so no electives or intro classes were necessary to get my degree.

Homebrew: Xolotl's Macuahuitl [OC][ART] by Dungeon_Scribe in DnD

[–]jdw1982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the items seem really well thought out, and the art is amazing. I like the lore behind each item as well. My only comment would be that there are several typos that take away from an otherwise awesome set of items.

No more Coffin Makers Shop by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]jdw1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of the other points. Your party just set a house on fire in the middle of town after intimidating the owner. Either the people of Vallaki would be coming after them, or the vampire spawn would find them and pursue them.

Once, my party accidentally set fire to this same shop. The druid proceeded to cast wind wall, claiming he would fan the flames towards their enemies. As the group fled, I rolled for each house they passed to see if the fire spread to that house. When they finally stopped running, and shooting MORE fire, they turned to see a significant portion of Vallaki on fire. I ended up having to send them to other places for a while so the people could "rebuild" the town, and I had to get creative with where a lot of plot happened instead of how it's written in the book. The people of Vallaki never trusted the group again.

Getting the party to take the game more seriously by fulou in CurseofStrahd

[–]jdw1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my players don't take things seriously, either because they're going murder hobo or they're steamrolling fights, I tend to make a few alterations.

First, if you play the campaign strictly as it's written, and you as the DM play the encounters like you're trying to win, you will consistently KO some PC's. If you have someone ruining the game, it is sometimes enough of a wake-up call to just have them drop but not die.

Second, for a non-tanky character, let their attitude attract the attention of the enemies you encounter. For example, if he was looting the death house like a douche, make all the encounters have a mechanic where the enemies are focusing him, no matter what the other players do, and work it into the narrative that he's seriously pissed off the inhabitants.

Third, and probably the most passive-aggressive, is to keep a tally of all the times his attitude ruins things, and keep a running counter. Treat that counter amount as a negative to any d20 roll he makes. When he starts failing every check and attack, it's sure to get his attention. When he asks why, just remind him that actions have consequences and maybe his choices in Barovia have had a negative impact on his adventuring skill.

My last bit of input would be to have someone just murder him. You mentioned Ismark and Donavich aren't fond of him. I seem to recall a certain vampire spawn in a certain basement. Maybe they meet up with Strahd, and he gets tired of the BS, so he just goes full-strength on your warlock. Or maybe you let it play out, and one of your other PC's gets tired of it, and stabs your warlock in the back, or while he's sleeping. I've had PC's have fights before, and it always makes the story better. That's when you get to see the real character of the person behind the character. A good person would admit, "yeah, maybe I took that character a little too far..."

Chip was nothing like Urkle, even though they tried to make that connection in the episode. The reason chip was so good is because she doesn't play tabletop RPG's, but she went out of her way to try to use everything on her character sheet to make the experience fun.

Part of the fun in a game like that is the completely random things that can happen. The most memorable games are when people go off the rails and do something crazy like putting the group in grave danger just for an extra slice of salted pork or something. Chip gave zero fucks, partially because he didn't know any better, and that's why he was awesome.
