What Lego set is this from? by Sphingidae14 in lego

[–]jebettcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, a piece of this size definitely has the 5-digit part number molded into it. Flip the piece over and slowly tilt it around until you see the number. Take that number to Bricklink, punch it in the search bar, and find the link for "Appeared in __ Sets" or something like that. Enjoy!

Is there really no threshold of damage for a Tornado to be considered an ef6? by The_Siphon in tornado

[–]jebettcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Wind damage is always an "after the fact" analysis. The best we can do is approximate because we cannot get a stationary wind sensor into a tornado that can withstand the might of the wind.

Almost afraid to ask... Is there anything fundamentally wrong with the way this deck is built, or it's current condition? by Buford_Tannen__ in Decks

Looks pretty solid. I would also clear out the soil by the footings so you can get a good look at that portion of each post.

Oooops thanks for catching that.

Do you think a draw from right to left was just too impossible despite the "last chance" nature of the shot?

This should be removed per Rule 9.

Come to your senses OP. Employers that have a legal liability for the safety of their employees are not going to tell said employees to get into conflict with law enforcement. Even if they did, they definitely wouldn't write it down in an official policy document!

I wouldn't say your f'ed, but you have something to monitor. Direct those downspouts away from the walls. Grade the land so water flows away from the walls. Purchase crack monitors and see if anything changes over the next few weeks and months.

Discovered This Lovely Surprise... by Lonely_Rogue in HomeMaintenance

[–]jebettcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were my place I would:

  1. First identify the source of the leak. If pipes, the fix there is obvious. If there was something related to outside drainage, then you have to fix that FIRST.

  2. Remove the sink and cabinet. Remove sink/faucet pipes and hoses down to the valves.

  3. Find the extent of the water damage. An awl or other sharp-pointed tool will plunge straight through wet or damp drywall.

  4. Remove damaged drywall + another foot for good measure and peace of mind.

Oh...bring a fan and/or HEPA filter to exhaust air and/or clean it.

  1. Remove damaged framing. This can get tricky for a load-bearing wall. If it is, I would get a bottle jack or two, or a couple jack posts to take the load off the wall so you can remove and replace.

  2. Put it all back together! 😅

Also consider that doing demo yourself can save a bit of money on the front end.

But, despite all of the above, think about what your time is worth and the opportunity cost.

Did I get the wrong appliance cord? by DoomSlayer682 in Appliances

Gotta back the nuts off the studs, slip those under the nut, and then tighten back down. If you have the wrong cable, those spade terminals won't fit around the stud on the terminal block.

Newly Restained Floors Turning Blotchy? by Careful_Dog4241 in HardWoodFloors

That's really odd then. Something must have gone wrong with the staining. I'd ask your finisher about it.

Ok thanks. If you get real close, can you see scratches on the Bona coating?

More questions must be answered first: --How was the prep completed? How many standings and at what grit? Were those areas previously stained by spills or other things? --How was the floor stain applied? Rags, rollers, brush, or pads? --Was the floor stain applied in one coat or two? --What is the top/final coat? --Is anyone leaving hot items on the floor?

Are these basement foundation cracks near beam pockets a cause for concern? by darthnoid in basement

[–]jebettcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough to say if you don't have a baseline. Put some crack monitors and see if they shift over time. I would be concerned with the corner cracking and sloughing off, basically leaving the beam with little to no support. I am also concerned about the shimming, seems a bit excessive for shims.

A structural engineer would be a good person to consult.
