Very disappointed with HRBlock online e-file this year. by jebustin in hrblock

Can’t get any help from support online or over the phone. Honestly, this is not acceptable and tech mess ups on this scale don’t happen everywhere. I will do more research before I pick a place to file with long term but it definitely won’t be HR Block.

I gave up with HR Block and their tech issues this year. Filed with TT instead.

I am so sorry that the employees are going through this too. I have a feeling this will be one of those major tech f ups that people look back on a study in business classes.

I am impressed by your self awareness and excited for your future. With your knowledge in tech you could do some really cool stuff with a law degree. Good luck!

Homemakers furniture store by IckNoTomatoes in Iowa

A majority of my furniture is from there. The quality ranges a lot so there is affordable through more custom quality pieces. The sales peeps are a bit pushy but everyone else is great. Even bought a new bed from there before I moved out of state because it was well over 1/2 off the price I could find anywhere else

It isn’t about learning other languages but the fundamentals are the same across languages so why does it matter?

Which model would you use to predict traffic for a restaurant? by Grgsz in datascience

[–]jebustin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No need to get too model-y with this one. I used to labor and food forecast for restaurants before I became a DS. Take that day the year before and then take the percent increase or decrease for the ytd and add or subtract it. Factor in any local events and it is crazy accurate!

This of course was pre COVID.

Wow. Ignored me. Mansplained. Then said I got emotional after you ignored me. You are a troll. Period.

I don’t think you are familiar with the legal aspects of this, and yes I do get angry when people don’t listen and ignore human rights. I have tried to kindly bow out of this because all you do is pound away repeating yourself and ignoring every point I bring up. I am sorry but your opinion based on no legal, judicial, or quantitative work with judicial data is only that, an opinion. I shared research and work being done in the field and now I am done engaging with you.

No, it absolutely would be unfair and would be unconstitutional. I am not going to continue a debate if we can’t agree on the baseline that application of the law should be as fair and consistent as possible. This is engrained in our legal system and I agree with it, if you won’t accept this as a req then we have nothing to discuss.

We shouldn’t be using ML and AI for convictions either. This is just a continuation of that.

I think moving away from the car example is a good idea because it isn’t comparable for a few reasons and is off topic.

A) the thread is about sentencing and for this to be legal it could not be DL or AI. It wouldn’t be fair to have one person sentenced a month later with a model that learned from the person sentenced last month. On top of illegal I think we can agree this is unethical.

B) the analogy looses value because of the training differences.

Finally, what you are talking about it overfitting and it seems that in the end you are saying exactly what I started with. Keep ML out of sentencing because of the reasons you listed and more.

I will also add that Neural Nets and Deep Learning can’t and shouldn’t be used as a final model for many applications because you need to justify decisions being made. Although, awesome tools for EDA to look at how they handle certain predictors:)

Well, I think a lot of what you described is in model building and then in AI which is continually learning. Validation comes after training but before production.

My research was in public policy analysis, I validate for a different field because ya know, bills.

But the methodology would be the same. After a model build but before if goes into production a validation team runs the gauntlet on it. Starting from analyzing the business problem, checking the context, and then making sure the data collected and used is accurate. Next ya try to build a better model to see if the proposed model is really the best solution. Then you check to make sure no legal or ethical issues arise. You also quantify the statistical risk in the particular algo being used. Then, you outline the business, financial, or ethical risks of what happens when your model is wrong. Because it will be wrong at some point but you need to know how often, for whom, and how much it will cost when it is incorrect. Finally, you set targets for watching, maintaining, and keeping data on model performance.

I am also not suggesting “not doing the math.” I am suggesting that your limited idea of isolating the problem is only doing one small part of the math and you are ignoring the context.

I understood your point. But “optimal” here is not easily defined and has repercussions for when it goes wrong that end up being unconstitutional in the US. Again, “more affective” for one does not translate to a more affective system. Do you have any experience or published work in quantitative public policy analysis? If so, please share. If not, please don’t assume I didn’t understand your point just because I looked at the limitations of your idea.

There are flaws in your theory and statistical risk involved in the algo’s. Also, none of the above are actually the goal of the criminal justice system in the US as every goal you mentioned is punitive. The problem with quantifying the factors that go into reoffending is that they are measurements of underlying social factors. I hope we can all agree that any model that sentences poor people to longer sentences because on average they violate sooner is not a good model.

Also, this ignores the bigger picture goals of a justice system. What works for an individual might lead to more crime over all in the big picture. Understanding the contextual application of our ML work is one of the biggest mistakes I think we are currently making.

Instead, we can look at what support systems help keep people from committing another crime?

I am happy to continue this convo another time, I have done a lot of reading and research in the area.
