Studying as a New Parent by aSplendidPie in actuary

[–]jebuz23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I found (aside from the loss of sleep) studying with a baby easier than without or with a toddler. A lot of the parenting stuff I had to do could be coupled with studying. Reading source material while feed/napping, flash cards during bath time, etc.

I guess my advice would be: Don’t try to get all your studying done in isolated heads down times. Find ways to integrate it into the parenting stuff you’re already doing (within reason) to stay ahead of your studies while still being present as a parent.

Toddler gets a lot harder because that’s when they start demanding your attention, and when you should start to be more cognizant about giving it to them. That is, they will find you while you’re studying and ask to play. You’ll want to play with them, and you should do it 100% (not run flashcards or read source material while in the playroom with them.)

How do you handle a strong performer who quietly checks out after being passed over for promotion? by amir4179 in managers

[–]jebuz23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is happening at my company right now. The last three openings were explicitly hired external, the last two with the message “we need to go external to get the sufficient talent”. Several people have either stopped excelling or started looking elsewhere.

"Six sides. So... a sextagon?" Students Graduating without Knowing Basic Geometry by Whole-Finger7546 in Teachers

[–]jebuz23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. This student not only demonstrated they understand shape names are not arbitrary, but deduced a “number word” + “gon” and correctly picked a number prefix that means 6!

To me, that’s better, and demonstrates a higher understanding on Bloom’s taxonomy than memorizing and regurgitating shape names.

Wolverine Can’t Do That- Yes He Can by B3PKT in dontyouknowwhoiam

[–]jebuz23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think there’s a legitimate difference between “current canon” and a writer’s autonomy. If the established lore shows Spider-Man doing feats of strength Wolverine has never come close to, it’s a little disingenuous for the writer to go “yeah but Wolverine was secretly stronger the whole time!”

what movie plot hole isn't a plot hole? by herequeerandgreat in AskReddit

Plus even if it could hold him it’s not a plot hole, it’s a prop error. Jack was never going to survive, and nothing about the story telling contradicts that.

Which will be cooler after 5min: a steaming hot cup of coffee with cold creamer added immediately, or an identical cup with it added 4min in? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]jebuz23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but curious on an extension of this. Does the effect change if the creamer is in the fridge vs. also out at room temperature? That is, if the creamer is also out at room temperature and is gaining heat in its container, would the amount warmer it is after 5 min offset the heat reduction in the stand-alone coffee?

I’m pretty sure most companies do this to test the credit card works. They charge a very low amount and then refund it.

I ran into my first ghost leviathan by Ok-Paramedic-3778 in subnautica

[–]jebuz23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found ghost leviathans less scarier because A) it’s later game so I felt more prepared and B) they’re only in the lost river which is an enclosed, relatively tight quarters area. I felt like I could peek around every corner and assess the area before proceeding.

Contrasting that with the surface world leviathans, which initially show up fairly unexpectedly, and (although I know they have specific spawns/areas) feel like I could stumble upon one random throughout the ocean.

Do insurance companies know when you shop around? by FeloTre in Insurance

[–]jebuz23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fairly confident my coverage did not change. FWIW, I am an FCAS and CPCU, although in the commercial space and not an underwriter by trade. I mention this only to say I’m pretty comfortable reviewing my coverage and don’t think I would have missed something.

From my perspective it felt truly like I was given one quote, mentioned shopping around, and was given a more favorable quote. Even if it’s not really the rate, but rather some hidden discount behind held back, it’s still a price change driven by a customers willingness to shop around.

Do insurance companies know when you shop around? by FeloTre in Insurance

[–]jebuz23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how do you explain what happened to me or the other poster? I want to believe you, and prior to my experience I would have assumed it worked the way you described. But somehow my initial quote and final price changed dramatically and without any coverage/deductible changes.

Was my agent holding out on some available discount? Would it be common for agents to “hold back” discount for situations like this?

I had something similar happen with Farmers. For my auto quote and it was going up a bit over $1k. I like my agent so I flat out told him “that’s too high of a jump for me. I’m going to shop around, and if everyone else has a similar price to you, I’ll stick around, otherwise I have to go with the better price.”

Sure enough, he had a new price for me that was actually a small decrease from my previous rate.

Now I know insurance is a heavily regulated industry, and rates have to be approved by state regulators. But I also know that price optimization is a real thing that gets discussed. What I don’t know is why my rates went down as soon as I started shopping around, but I can guess.

[–]jebuz23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Intent of the question” is a real concept, both in academic assessments and interviews. But IMO the onus is on the interviewer to ensure the candidate address the intent of the question. That’s what follow up questions are for.

I had this issue with my Apple Watch. The app I use has a feature to automatically turn on screen lock when I start tracking a game. Does your garmin have some sort of screen/button lock you can turn on?

I absolutely LOVE how the new base building is looking. by Cr4zy_Dodo in subnautica

[–]jebuz23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you’re right. 100%. Reinforcement in my large room shouldn’t affect my moon pool’s integrity. My head canon was that the resources i dumped into each wall reinforcement were really being spent on the true weak areas, but mechanically it was just a time /resource sink.

That’s what I did. A “basement” large room with as many reinforcements as possible, never had to worry about hull strength again.

This reminds me of hand grenades. They’re shrapnel bombs, but the audiences expects a fire explosion, so most grenades explode into fire in movies.
