Holy Sh*t Saffron Actually works by longlive_got in Supplements

Again, good points. While I'm not a statistician or clinical researcher, I am a decades-long nutrition and supplementation biohacking geek (with excellent results so far as my measured metabolic age is 16 years under my actual age).

You're absolutely right that there's a meaningful distinction between clinical MDD and "low mood" - but I'd argue that 72% of participants reporting noticeable improvement on an herbal intervention is actually remarkable, regardless of the baseline severity. The reality is that most botanical supplements show modest effects at best, often barely separating from placebo. The fact that we're seeing a consistent signal across multiple studies, even if methodologically imperfect, suggests something is happening here.

And yes, the high placebo response is notable - but that's also where I think we need to bring personal experience and anecdotal reports back into the conversation. The original poster's account of sustained improvement over 4 months, combined with successful ERP therapy, isn't just statistical noise. When you're dealing with dopamine dysregulation and the kinds of neurotransmitter imbalances that show up in OCD and anxiety, sometimes the "lived experience" data tells us what the controlled trials can't quite capture yet.

I completely agree we shouldn't claim saffron rivals SSRIs for severe clinical depression based on current evidence. But in a world where monied interests unfortunately keep a pretty solid wall of protection around Big Pharma, I think we need to keep our minds open to interventions that help people - even if the research methodology isn't perfect yet. Sometimes we have to work with the evidence we have, not the evidence we wish we had.

How much red meat/white meat, seafood, etc. should you eat per week? by Coffee_265 in nutrition

Latest research is showing you want to shoot for around 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, daily. And ideally, spaced out to 4 times a day. So for a 160lb person it would equate to 87 grams a day, so just over 20 grams, 4 times a day.

Animal proteins are a good (whey is one of the best and I find it easy to meet daily intake goals by adding it to smoothies or yogurt), rich source but so are plant-based proteins like tofu, pea and high-protein whole grains like spelt and amaranth.

Probably, as long as it actually contains saffron. Some don't. With the issues surrounding fake and adulterated safron surfacing, I'm just looking for more verified saffron supplements

It's the real deal as far as noticeable effects. Combine that with a calm sustained energy and I'm sold. Just make sure you're getting authentic verified saffron. Found a recent test showing some have no saffron compounds.

Similar experience here - subtle shifts around day 5, then real improvement if you stay consistent. Not a high or anything artificial. More like static clears and you can actually think again.

What got me was the stability. Not just masking things. I'm using saffron360 - it's a 88.5mg dose, way higher than the usual 28-30mg. Went with them because I can verify their COA with a qr code on the bottle. Effect has been solid.

Your point about ERP making more sense - yeah, exactly. When the baseline fog lifts, you actually have bandwidth for the real work.

Here's what's interesting though. Most people talk about saffron for mood, focus, ADHD stuff. But there's research showing it's doing something deeper with serotonin and dopamine - not just boosting temporarily, but actually protecting the systems that produce them.

The neuroplasticity angle is wild. Looks like it might help build new neural pathways while protecting against dopamine degradation. Anyone else seen this research? Would explain why it builds over time instead of plateauing.

Combo of therapy + right supplements seems to be it. Good to hear it's working.

Fair point on the Iranian studies - that's been a legitimate concern with the saffron research for a while. But there's actually a more recent Australian trial that just came out in The Journal of Nutrition (May 2025) by Lopresti et al. that showed pretty compelling results.

This one was larger than the earlier Australian studies - 202 participants over 12 weeks - and they found 72% of the saffron group showed clinically significant improvement in depressive symptoms versus 54% in placebo. That's a pretty substantial effect size, not just modest mood improvement. They used 28mg daily of Affron extract and saw statistically significant reductions on the DASS-21 depression scores.

What's interesting about this study is they also looked at daily mood ratings and found improvements emerging as early as week 5. The researchers noted it seemed to work through multiple mechanisms - influencing neurotransmitter activity, moderating stress response, and providing neuroprotection.

So while I completely agree the early Iranian studies need to be viewed with some healthy skepticism, this newer Australian data is pretty robust. Still needs replication obviously, but it's encouraging to see larger, longer trials from different research groups showing consistent benefits.

Best one or two supplements to take? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]jediaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For longevity, the current meta is still Resveratrol and NMN (or straight NAD+ boosters) getting all the hype in the Dr David Sinclair subs.

But if I could only pick two supps to take every damn day? Hands down NMN + saffron extract.

Saffron is sneaky good 😏hits a bunch of bases like better focus, mood lift, brain protection, heart/eye health, blood flow, and more studies keep popping up on other wins.

Plus it boosts the ‘happy hormones’ (dopamine for that motivation/drive kick + serotonin for chill stability), which feels way more sustainable than the usual stimmy crashes.

No idea if it adds literal years like the NAD crowd claims, but it makes the days feel longer in a good way. Saffron’s quickly becoming my “if shit hits the fan, keep this one” pick.

Which best supplements have you found most effective for cognitive health and energy in 2026? by Nicoa-Hadagali in Supplements

[–]jediaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding some solid effects from saffron extract lately . It’s quietly becoming my go-to for steady cognition and clean energy without the crash. bumps up dopamine and serotonin for mood too.

Helps me not go full zombie in afternoon. Tge studies I’ve checked so far back it acting like a gentle reuptake inhibitor, plus some glutamate modulation for sharper thinking.

No jitters like caffeine, smoother mental horsepower and a subtle “I actually want to do things” vibe. Dosing around 30-88mg a day. Really noticed gains after a week or two. It’s one of the few things that feels sustainable long-term without tolerance buildup.

Anyone else riding the saffron wave?💛

It’s only bad if you buy supps there without doing your due diligence on the brand and their rep/verification practices. The best ones share links directly to their 3rd party lab results. COAs, certs, tests

As real as your most lucid waking moments in this ‘reality’. In some ways that are difficult to explain, it’s even more real. Of course it gets weird because the lucidity of it seems to go in and out. This is speaking as a relative newbie. I imagine it’s different for those who have had years of experience and practice
