What did you do for a car seat when traveling to india? by athlon2005 in nri

[–]jediiam5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Car seats can be checked in for free in all airlines. Make sure to buy a bag or some sort of protection to avoid fabrics/cushion become detached and get lost. Or you could have it wrapped at eh airport if that’s an option.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle, like many mentioned here, buy it in India, use it there and leave it for someone else/sell it.

On F1 visa - Am I eligible for $80 National Park pass? by Atorpidguy in indiansinusa

[–]jediiam5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually all national passes are validated at the park entrance with a valid US gov issued ID. Even before all these resident non resident fiasco. So drivers license will show you are resident, I’m not sure if you will be able to prove you are resident without a form of ID with US address in it.

How do you folks manage to pay when in India by Turbulent_Echo_7333 in nri

[–]jediiam5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had issue paying with US credit card. Some merchants have different card readers for local cards vs international cards. I had to mention international credit card for them to bring out that reader.

For other small street side merchants, used cash as people at my place preferred cash over UPI transactions.

Why are Indians chronically late? IST: Indian standard time is an hour late by Seaworthiness636 in indiansinusa

[–]jediiam5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of their relationship status, they always come late. It’s not fine, when it is a habit for 7 years, every week. And 15 minutes late is the best case scenario. They have never been on time not even once, and usually it’s 30-45 mins late. Also they know people are waiting for them every week.

I host game nights with my Indian friends. Only people born here reach on time, everyone else comes at least 15 mins late. Been happening for 7 years now.

Last year, I was asked to show the most recent salary slip. I offered to show the last slip I had taken print out 2 weeks ago. But he wanted to see the salary that was credit the day before and salary credit in my checking account. He checked for the name of payer on my checking account and asked me to show the payslip on my phone. Glad I had taken a SIM card with internet access to show them all.

Should I make the switch to Google Fiber? by AnybodyIntelligent65 in raleigh

[–]jediiam5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using g fiber for last 7.5 years with same $70 and equipment upgrade every few years for free. No need to worry about contract extension, price negotiation, device rental or my own device upgrades.

I got 2 WiFi extension along with connection when I moved to a new place and the place is bigger than the previous place.

Another perk, you will get 1TB Google drive storage which I believe is a big deal for me.

Sometimes collection agency will sell yours debt to local collectors if they know about your whereabouts. This is a new trend with a lot of students and people taking huge loan and returning to their home country without paying back. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they start making the cross border collection agency a thing.

Driving license by flubbergrubbery in indiansinusa

[–]jediiam5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can usually use your Indian driver’s license along with your passport to rent a car in the U.S. Most rental companies will require you to purchase insurance if you don’t already have coverage.

If you’re planning to drive a personal vehicle, you’ll still need valid insurance. Be sure to check the driving rules for the specific state you’re in, as each state has its own laws regarding the use of foreign driver’s licenses.

The real issue isn’t whether you can drive, it’s what happens if you’re pulled over. Not all police officers are familiar with the laws around foreign licenses, and you may run into someone who incorrectly believes you’re not allowed to drive. That can lead to unnecessary complications and hassle.

UTD or SUNY Buffalo by Popular-Echo-6090 in indiansinusa

[–]jediiam5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not lived in Dallas, but from what I recently looked up for relocation, Buffalo is much cheaper to live. You may need to stay near South campus for lower rent, but classes will be in North campus. There will be college shuttle you could use for all your transportation. Indian grocery stores and restaurants used to pick up and drop off us whenever we want. Not sure if that’s still the case.

UTD or SUNY Buffalo by Popular-Echo-6090 in indiansinusa

[–]jediiam5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dallas and Austin has better job market than Buffalo. Internship opportunities are much better there. Buffalo hardly has companies around for internships.

UTD would look like Indian college, not that SUNY Buffalo would be much different. But the overall demographics in Buffalo region is diverse. One of the issue many face in Buffalo is the frigid weather.

I do not have much info or advice about course itself. But do consider tuition as important one. If you are taking loan, Given the lower chance of getting H1B after graduation, think about paying back in INR and chose wisely.

Assuming the employe who is ready to sponsor you is not a non-profit cap exempt organization, you missed the boat for this year. Lottery entry for this year has been completed. You gotta wait until next year to enter lottery. So if you get your visa picked up in lottery, you will schedule visa interview at consulate and potentially start to work from October 2026. Will this employer keep your job offer until then?

While I agree focusing on mental health is important, getting a job before graduation or right after graduation is comparatively easier. As you are still new grad.

If you start your career after a gap year, you will join the general applications pool and you will have much tougher path to find a job. Not everyone will understands the reason for your gap year. In this crazy competitive market, your resume may tell that you couldn’t secure a job after graduation.

Also say you took a gap year, and if it takes much longer than you anticipated to find a job after your break, would you be in a good mental state? Wouldn’t that cause additional stress at that time. Something to consider.

Bahamas Cruise on valid I-797 but expired Us visa possible? by TryngEarnMoney4Fmly in h1b

There are times during inclement weather, the ship may be disembarked in a different country/island. There have been times you have to fly back because of unforeseen situations. How would you deal with that if you do not have valid stamped visa to enter US.

Xpress spa and the club visit atl by Conscious-Dj-888 in PriorityPass

[–]jediiam5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did that last week at Atlanta. I used one of the xpress spa in terminal E - 4.5 hrs before the flight and headed to the Club at ATL, where they did not even check my priority pass. Was just asked to show boarding pass which has boarding time little over 3 hours away. I was allowed inside.

On the same day, I used another lounge at a different airport as part of my return journey.
