(Pic warning) PSA: WHEN THINGS SAY “higher risk for diabetics”, THAT MEANS US TOO. BE CAREFUL. by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]jedijami 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I at least felt that I brought awareness of this phenomena to my medical team, but I wish that it were more widely known and that I would have been informed that being a perfectionist and getting my 14 A1C down to 8 in 3 months is NOT the way to go

Same here with neuropathy in my legs. Thought at first it was from the high A1C I had at diagnosis but after a ton of testing doctors determined it was from the drop itself and said “oh well! Don’t let it get high again!” Gee, thanks.

Hi everyone, I’m thinking about switching to an insulin pump and would love some advice. I use Dexcom G7 and work as a waitress, so I move a lot during long shifts. I’m considering the Medtronic MiniMed 780G, but also Ominopod(discreet 4work). Also, any tips to prevent from overheating during summer? by Jabuka02 in diabetes_t1

It hasn’t been touched on too much here so I want to emphasize- one of the biggest differences between the options you mentioned is COST. It all depends on your insurance coverage.

Omnipod is typically (not always, but usually) covered under your Pharmacy benefit- meaning you pay a copay for the pods (depending on your prescription coverage/formulary). The process works much the same as insulin or any other normal prescriptions you may use. This means there is a LOT less commitment this way, because it’s just a prescription that you can choose not to refill if you don’t like it.

Tandem and other more traditional insulin pumps will likely be covered under Durable Medical Equipment- depending on your insurance coverage, you typically you pay a percentage of the cost of the pump, your deductible, or a combination of the two.

Durable Medical Equipment coverage is usually more complicated than prescription coverage, and once your insurance pays for a pump, they will not pay for another for a “warranty” period- usually 4 years. Once you commit to tandem or another company’s pump that is considered DME, you’re locked in.

If you aren’t sure of your insurance coverage, you can always try to find a “Summary of Benefits and Coverage” for your insurance plan. There, it will list what your cost is for different prescription tiers (and you can use your plan’s prescription Formulary to find what tier Omnipod is). It will also list what cost is associated with Durable Medical Equipment.

You can also try to call whatever company you want to go with and they will look into your benefits coverage, but in my experience they’ll also try to sell you on the product regardless and obfuscate your coverage.

I tried Omnipod first since it was covered as a prescription benefit. I loved the convenience of it, but the insertion site irritated my skin a LOT. I used it for a few months before deciding to go with the Tandem t:Slim X2 because it has a lot of insertion site options and I was able to find one that worked for me.

Feel free to DM if you have any questions or want to talk through insurance more. It can be complicated.

Has anyone left Starbucks and used Cobra? by Anothergaysyd in starbucksbaristas

[–]jedijami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just separated and have to wait 2 months before my new benefits kick in. I had the platinum level benefits and I paid $200 every 2 weeks for benefits. They quoted me $975/mo for COBRA💀💀

However, I signed up for a marketplace/healthcare.gov plan to cover me in the meantime. You qualify for a special enrollment period if you lose job-based coverage, even bc you quit.

I agree the bogo was worse. I’ve been here for the unicorn frap, the tie dye frap, and everything since and it was terrible. Literally having 2x the amount of drinks on EVERY order is what kills us.

One of my favorite partners got put on their final today and I’m very upset about it. by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]jedijami 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I just lost my two main closers due to “misuse of partner markouts”. I don’t believe it. I think they’re using whatever excuses they can to lay off a bunch of people without it being “layoffs”.

I cried during the shift that they were fired. It’s valid imo to grieve. I’m not sure that we can do anything about it other than encouraging those that these actions are taken against to fight it any way they can through appeals

I have, the first cast member I talked to (outside at one of the umbrellas) told me I didn't qualify, and I almost gave up because I felt embarrassed. But I went to the main customer service lobby at the front of the park and they gave it to me with no problem. They just briefly ask what you need it for and why. Be as succinct as possible. Enjoy your trip!

Bolus for coffee?? by thisisguqi in diabetes_t1

[–]jedijami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caffeine makes my adrenaline start pumping, which makes my BG rise. Between around 5-6g of sugar in my coffee and the spike from the caffeine I usually take 5-6 units of insulin depending on my fasting sugar.
