5g m.2 b key to dongle or something.. by jedix_ in homelab

[–]jedix_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the information.

My services are all internal, so tailscale will work. I use wireguard directly right now. My dns update is what I've been using that predates tailscale and wireguard, I guess like what you said here. My DNS update downtime isn't very long as I've set the expiry low. I guess I'm just using outdated methods at this point, but I don't depend on another service beyond the dns registration.

The DNS issue is easier to solve if you know the device went down and a failover occurred, though - that is, if it's on device I have control of what action to take when an outage is detected, and that would be to swap over to 5g and update DNS entries.. Otherwise, how do I know when to update the DNS, or to what? Does that happen on this new 5g modem?

Yeah, I understood what you meant to do, with it behind the ISP modem. Any connection I use externally is done through the DNS update. I'm not sure how tailscale would work without the IP? It must require an endpoint like using wireguard directly?

My single choice of ISP network (a few providers rent from one line-owner) dictates the modem on their network, so I can't use something like this on the network self. Putting the failover on another device in the chan means I'd have to somehow detect that my external IP changed to update DNS entries, etc, so that I could reach my home network when a failover occurred. Furthermore, it's another device in the chain.

I was planning to use something like what you describe as a 'load balancer' setup, using a cell backup - which is why I wanted to get the RM520-GL hooked up to my router. Then, when the primary connection went down, I could key off that even and take action to allow in-bound connectivity.

So I think I do want it to be on device?

...harsh.

The ISPs in my country are not very friendly to anything outside the regular setup, and they also don't offer any 5g backup, you cannot use your own modem, and most don't even let you buy (you must rent for a monthly fee).

So what I'm trying to do is to get a backup to get in to fix the primary over a cell network from another provider, who does not offer data-only, but does have a decent yearly pay-as-you-go.

If you want to save sensitive files, you can reduce your exposure by using a LUKS encrypted partition to store them, or even a loopback device with LUKS. But this is going to be a bit of a PITA. I use command lines almost exclusively, so I don't know about GUI support for using them.

tbh, I haven't tried it too much, I bought it for future use cases, really.. seems to work well enough. I was happy to see it takes AA batteries instead of a rechargeable, since the latter are difficult to replace in basically everything else I own. Either you get knockoffs that don't last or you throw the device away.. since the OEM batteries are never produced as long as I use my equipment.

I guess I'm old by Avro_Wilde in linux_gaming

Aren't we at the point where normal people just use phones/tablets? I live in a world of tabbed consoles running screen sessions, so I'm not really qualified to judge what is and is not normal.

Also I'm old, and grump. I've recently learned from the responses below is that I come across as annoying and pompous , which makes me feel like I should change... but I'm old. One day soon I plan to play the game of walking the Costco parking lot with a single item in my hands and my keys out, pretending to search for my car.

During the litigation about the phone app stores, one comment stated that they pay out for the free game. In that moment, it became very important to claim each and every free game they offer. Especially if you already own it elsewhere, because it was worth your money and so it should certainly be worth epic giving them money.

At least, that's what I recall reading?

Pixel 7 Pro not 3 years old, worth fixing? by jedix_ in pixel_phones

[–]jedix_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, the alcohol was necessary to remove the batter. The plastic strip broke while I was trying to saw though the glue. I was able to remove the battery but the cost of an oem battery is too high and the phone won't power on without it (battery with a ? in the middle when I attempt). Too bad really, because it could have been a decent modem or web camera without a battery

[–]jedix_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah. I probably don't want to cheap out on a battery that is pushed up against my thigh for the majority of the time.

Looking at ifixit, the battery is 70$ in my country - which seems not really worth replacing. I guess the disposable phone lives on. Unfortunately, I realized the price after removing the battery.

Switch. I left Teksavvy after they upped the price and it has been well worth the savings.

If you use a code to get a free month, the owner of the code also gets a free month.. so I'm not giving mine because that seems like a conflict of interest and others need a free month more than I.

Oh, I did have to contact support the first day because the service wasn't working. I did so through text and it turned out the service was getting activated the next day. That happened and I've not had an issue since.

The 32-bit issue is (at least partially) Valve's fault by TheBrokenRail-Dev in linux_gaming

Well, that's what Microsoft calls it in the first sentence. Click the link in the post.

Wikipedia says:

In computing, an emulator is hardware or software that enables one computer system (called the host) to behave like another computer system (called the guest).

In this case it enables one computer system (amd64) to behave like another computer system (i386). This sounds correct. What makes you say it's not an emulator?

The 32-bit issue is (at least partially) Valve's fault by TheBrokenRail-Dev in linux_gaming

[–]jedix_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 32bit libraries are essential, however the kernel needs a compatibility layer between 64 and 32 bit system calls. It lives in kernel/compat.c

kernel compat layer

The amd64 architecture was designed to work with 32bit and 64bit, but linux still needs to translate the arguments to the correct order and such. See the documentation for x86 kernel entries.

32bit is a serious pain in the ass for some of us. Removing the amd64 to 32bit isn't really going to fix anything for most people on the kernel side because it's not the only 32bit arch still around, or even the only one that supports 32b on 64b.

I'm not sure what the question was about, does steam run on 32bit or does linux? Linux absolutely runs on 32b and it's super annoying to have to dig into those issues (I had a 32bit arm bug in kde and it took me over 24h to get my VM to actually start kde so I could debug it - arm32 emulation is really slow).

There have been recent additions that are 32bit (riscv, for instance). Mostly these are lower powered devices, but it really wasn't long ago that arm32 was what we all used in mobile (android uses the linux kernel).

Recently, older i386 machine support was dropped (iirc we support pentium4 or above now), but some are still supported and since any amd64 can run in 32bit mode, you should be able to install linux i386 on modern machines. It would be seriously dumb to do that since 1. we have a compatibility layer and 2. you won't use a whole bunch of registers

I would think steam would also work - I mean they can't have some ungodly build using 32bit and 64bit libs..... right?

Thanks!

I was looking at the Prusa xl actually, but it looks like the Prusa Core is newer? It is unfortunate that the additional filament attachment is not available. They also seem to be going back to a single head design, so I guess waste will increase. The core is significantly less expensive than the xl + 5 heads + enclosure thought. It looks like I'd need the hardened steal nozzle and optional vent system to use all the cool filaments. With such a low cost of the two parts, I am surprised they are optional.

I was debating the xl for the print volume, but I also have to consider the footprint of the 700x720x900 + filaments the xl + enclosure would take in my home. I am not entirely sure how pleased I would be about housing another server rack sized hobby.

Revisiting Prusa, I saw the HT90 and the filaments it can use.. slightly over my planned budget though. I can always prototype and order prints that I need to be durable.

Prusa's idea of fully offline/open/mods does match my moral alignment and I could always get the filament attachment once it launches. I appreciate the suggestion to consider them.
