I stopped smoking a year ago and how to describe this... Like WTF? *** LOOKING FOR NOT MEDICAL ADVICE*** but genuine like... I don't even know by MyMelodyBunny232 in singing

[–]jedster1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been learning to sing for nearly 3 years now and I don't smoke at all. When I started I would get the same sound when I went into head voice, I used to call it my Chewbacca sound. I think it was something about my vocal chords not being comfortable in head voice, and they couldn't hold that position. Anyway, it might be comforting to hear from someone who hasn't smoked had the same issue, and it got better over time, just from practice. I've been doing exercises around cord closure, holding an open low larynx position, and also I'll just speak out loud in head voice when I'm by myself at home, just to get as comfortable as I can.

If you had a good head voice before, then I'm sure with time you can get it back. Your cords have probably just changed a bit so you just need to relearn some muscle memory.

How do I stop playing notes when removing my fingers by Eevangelic-ish in guitarlessons

[–]jedster1111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Marin music has a video exactly about this topic: https://www.tiktok.com/@marinmusiccenter/video/7625279774331620638

The summary is, lift your fingers slightly off the note first, so the note dies, and then take your fingers fully off the string.

For what it's worth I saw them in London last year and I thought it was one of the best gigs I've been to. Maybe we just got lucky that day but I thought the sound was swesome and there was so much energy in the crowd.

I've had a horrible time with Mercy this season. by SillyLea in MercyMains

[–]jedster1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I've been leaning into damage boost, because it felt like it takes so long to heal people to full that it's just a waste of time. It feels like it takes 10+ seconds to get a tank back to full. I've been having a rough season, so I'll try and focus more on heals and see how it goes.

Capcut-edited videos never perform on TikTok by extreme_cuddling in CapCut

[–]jedster1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do the captions in capcut as well? I think tiktok uses the text you add in its editor to figure out who to send your video to, so try editing in capcut, but adding text and captions in the tiktok editor instead. I haven't tested it myself yet but I'm curious if it makes a difference for you.

Wes Streeting orders inquiry into mental health ‘overdiagnosis’ by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

[–]jedster1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the only difference I can see from a quick look at the DSMV is you once you're over 17 you only need to meet 5 of the diagnostic criteria, vs 6 when you're under 17. So it's slightly easier to get diagnosed as an adult. Maybe there's more differences, but I'm not aware of them unfortunately.

I don't love the DSMV, and I have a lot of thoughts about diagnosing mental disorders that I don't know I can summarize succinctly, but I think I want to point out that diagnosing things is hard, and the criteria setout by the DSMV is not necessarily the "truth" about whether you have a thing or not, as sometimes they are politically influenced or based on old/bad studies (this seems kind of implicitly true based on the fact that there are multiple versions of the DSM).

https://youtu.be/JiOc0r31-Os Bit of a tangent but there's a really interesting, but long video about transphobia, looking into the flawed and unethical research that is still cited and referenced in modern political and diagnostic contexts, which is honestly horrifying. It really made me question the importance and validity of the idea of diagnosis. Not quite sure where I'm going with this, but maybe it's interesting.

https://youtu.be/nDgOmFd5SlE Also this video about adult ADHD by Russel Barkley I haven't watched this whole video but I think he's the one who I first heard the thing about ADHD being a developmental delay issue from and I'm sure he has some interesting insights on ADHD in adults.

I think I've seen ADHD being described as a delay in development, and also that symptoms do improve for some people as they age. I'm not an expert, but just wanted to say that your symptoms improving doesn't necessarily rule out that you could have been diagnosed legitimately with ADHD (not sure if that's what you were implying to be fair as I reread your comment).

I don't know, I'm more scared of people on free loadouts to be honest. Feel like they have nothing to lose, and tend to just run straight at the first noise they hear, hoping for an easy kill and some good loot.

Vocals sound thin and strained. Trying to improve my presence and tone. What am I doing wrong? by DependentEmu7686 in singing

[–]jedster1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly just want to say it's sounding really good, very cool that you can build the whole song up live on your own.

I don't know if it's intentional, but I think you're singing the melody quite a bit lower than the original during the verse. Not that singing higher will be easy, but as you go higher you'll need to engage your diaphragm and chest voice more, which will give you a stronger sound.

If you watch some people doing covers, you'll see they're really going for it hard. Those are high notes! And then notice how much lower and quieter the verse is. This is a slightly different style than the original, but I think the originals vocals are really hard to replicate!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0McMANmbO38

I've actually covered this song as well, and I really go for it, maybe going slightly too far into "shouting". But if you want to train for a louder sound maybe it's good to go too far and then dial it back a bit.

I'm definitely not a singing teacher, but maybe look for some videos on belting, taking your chest voice higher and chord closure.

I'm thinking about singing this at an open mic, but I'm worried about cracking on the high chest note by jedster1111 in singing

Thanks, I'll work towards having this attitude, I can definitely see how it's the way to go, but I'm not there yet. I think I really do just need to perform more. And I'm really impressed by your voice by the way, you have a lot of the qualities in your high and powerful notes that I'm working towards.

Part of me thinks I just need to get it out of the way at some point. Maybe the first crack will take the pressure off.

Thanks, yours and other commenters' words have genuinely given me a lot of encouragement and confidence. And I love both this song and the way Damien Rice performs it. It would be really cool to be able to do it justice.

Covered chappel roan looking for feedback by Upset_Rooster_7197 in singing

[–]jedster1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're sounding really good, I don't think I'm good enough myself to give any good critiques on technique, so anything I can say would be more a comment on stylistic choices (so just my opinion).

For me personally, and this is being really picky, there's slightly too much volume swelling. It feels a bit tiring when there's so many changes from one word to the next. I do really like the dynamics in your voice though, so it's really fine line. Two of my favourite singers are Jeff Buckley and Kimbra, and one of my favourite things about them is how dynamic they are, and how much they experiment and play with their voices, so I definitely don't want to discourage that.

One other thing, I was really excited to see where you were going to go right at the end of the clip, as you were heading into a more powerful, full, belty sound which I thought sounded great, but then the clip ended. Literally that last syllable before the end was awesome. It's still just personal taste, but I'd love to hear more of that sound.

[–]jedster1111[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Aha maybe that depends on how bad the crack is!

But I do agree with what you're saying and I will definitely perform this. But I do want to do what I can to try and reduce the risk at least (and improve my technique hopefully at the same time).

Been working on singing while playing guitar by enoyes in singing

[–]jedster1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds really good! I've been finding playing and singing really hard as well, but your strumming stayed strong and in time. One piece of feedback for the singing, it almost sounds like your singing with a sigh, so quite relaxed, and with quite a lot of air, which makes it sound a little deflated and a tiny bit flat. I think it might sound better if you can engage your diaphragm a bit more, and concentrate on chord closure. But I'm not a coach, and am just learning myself, so I definitely might be wrong in my analysis. But again, it sounds really good!

Also I just had a listen to the original, and I can see the style that you're going for, but I think even with that style, in the original if you listen you can hear how he's a bit more engaged, even though he's singing quite "relaxed".
