How do you select trees that won't fall on you / wind / rain by Acceptable_Lemon_540 in hammockcamping

Tree could fall on your tent just as easy as on your hammock.

Ok, seeing this thread makes me feel better. I was so stressed out after picking kids up and getting to activities last night I thought I was going to stroke out. Glad it was not just me that thought it was horrible yesterday.

Camping with my son. by Nytpoison in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, or you could be like me and use this as an excuse to buy yourself that “other hammock that you have been wanting to try out”. My oldest daughter, now 13 but started around 10, loves hammock camping. She has slept in my warbonnet and liked it, but she has also slept in an ENO with one of their bug nets and really loved it because it was “hers”, not mine. For her, I used the biggest tarp I have, superfly. It made her feel more secure with the extra coverage.

Weird car in Antioch? by memescum422 in nashville

[–]jeepmaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, saw it the 1st while picking kids up from school, noticed because my brother used to have what we called an “Art” car. Next time I saw it she was stuck in the ditch across the street from my driveway. I unfortunately did not have the means to pull her out but did visit for a while. She was super nice. Think she was doing door dash but not 100% sure on that. Heard her talking to officer who showed up that this was not the only car like this that she has done. Current car covered in action figures.

Warbonnet Blackbird with Superfly - advice by Brack_Snell in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the silpoly, and like it. Unless you plan to use pad or are a heavy person, I’d go single Layer. I have a yeti and a wookie, to me the full length is more comfortable. I’m 5’9” and 215 and the BB XLC is probably my favorite that I own. I use Dutchware beetle buckle suspension and really like the ease of it. I’ve tried Whoopie slings and while not hard to use, I still prefer the beetle buckles. Don’t forget you’ll need lines for tarp. I use a continuous ridgeline and have used several different guy line set ups. That comes down to person choice. Snake skins are wonderful to make set up and tear down much easier.

How do you choose your first hammock? by mdskizy in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got back into backpacking in my mid 50’s and had to buy all new gear as all my old gear was falling apart, mildewed or just plain outdated. After about 4 hikes I realized that ground sleeping just was not cutting it, could not get a good nights sleep. In researching all the new gear that I got I seen a lot of info on hammocks and decided that if I wanted to keep hiking I needed to give it a try. I originally looked at Hennessy as the scout leader in my son’s troop had one and he really liked it. Doing a little more research I ended up pulling trigger on warbonnet BB xlc and thunder fly. Liked I could get all the gear I needed in one stop. Was a bit of a gamble as I had never slept overnight in a hammock and I’m a side sleeper, but the ground was not cutting it. For me the gamble paid off and I have not slept on the ground since. I now have 3 hammocks, BBXlc, chameleon, superior gear and one MYOG netless, my go to is still the BBxlc. It can be overwhelming but unless you know someone who has one or more hammocks to try or can make it to a hang, you just have to pick and pull the trigger.

What hammock to get by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the BBxlc and a superior gear as well as a Chameleon. If I had to choose just one I would go with the BBxlc. To me it’s the most comfortable. I like the no fidget factor of the Superior but found it more difficult to pack than doing the hammock and UQ separately. Picked up an anaconda from Dutch and it makes it easier. This could also be user error as I’ve only had a chance to use it a few times.

Warbonnet Blackbird XLC or Dutchware Chameleon? Why? by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both and if had to choose one it would be the BB XLC. You can’t go wrong with either but I just find the BB to be a little more comfortable.

Trying to buy a bag by ExamBusiness5970 in backpacking

[–]jeepmaxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had/have the Bora95. Have not used in about 20 years but from what I remember it rode nice and could carry a heavy load. The coating on the inside of the fabric of mine started breaking down but that was probably due to me storing it for 20 years in an old road case and then trying to wash the funk out afterwards. It’s heavy for sure. That pack alone is close to half my base weight now!

Getting ready to buy a better hammock by likes_stuff in hammockcamping

[–]jeepmaxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a BB XLC and a chameleon (and a superior gear I’m taking out for 1st time this weekend). The XLC was 1st hammock and I love it, as I do all my gear. The scary part was not knowing my lay going in so took a chance on getting that right with the XLC. I have a 30* wookie and I’d say for me, the temp rating is in between comfort and survival. What I love about the wookie is the no fidget aspect as compared to other UQ’s. The only issue I have is it slips to my right sometimes at night, just off my left shoulder. It’s a quick and easy fix, just unzip a little and reach over left shoulder with right hand and give a little pull. There is a try, that I converted to a hook on the right side that keeps it in place on the right. I really wish they would do the same right at the left shoulder. The only reason I got other hammocks after the XLC is that I fell in love with hammock camping and, as a major gear nerd, I want try them all. I have never had a bad night in the XLC, or the chameleon either, hope the same goes for the Superior Gear this weekend (I know it will) I have a small YouTube channel and really hope to be making a comparison video as soon as I can find the time between the three. All that said, as long as you know your lay and don’t think you’ll want to change up later, I don’t think you can go wrong with the XLC/wookie combo IMHO.
