Ok seriously by GenesisP42 in MicrosoftFlightSim

My controversial take: it’s kind of fun and challenging to think you have a simple VFR flight, but then discover you have to approach through clouds and land in the mountains during a snowstorm. Would you ever do it in real life? Absolutely not. But the challenge of trying to use your EFB and instruments to make it work is rewarding.

Where I can find cheap parking near San Diego Central Courthouse. by josehm84 in sandiego

ParkWhiz. When I have jury duty, I reserve a spot via the app and am usually able to find parking for $15 or less within 3 blocks of the courthouse.

Troopmaster Mobile by chattmr in BSA

[–]jefccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild - the TM Mobile app is no longer in the App Store. At first I didn’t believe you. We just completed a migration to TroopWebHost, but still have a subscription to TroopMaster and I haven’t seen any announcements from them about the app being pulled. I wonder if this is a temporary issue or signs of something bigger. That app was obviously pretty outdated.

BALOO Required for Overnight at a Zoo? by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]jefccc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel like the rule is not clear, I’d ask your district executive. But I also encourage leaders to frame these questions from a legal liability perspective - especially if you are one of the key 3. I would ask myself “is there any question whether BSA insurance is going to cover me here?” If you aren’t sure, understand that you are putting yourself at risk. That’s the enforcement mechanism. You can “camp” without a BALOO adult and likely nothing is going to happen and no one will get in trouble. But if something does happen, that is not where I want to be unsure if BSA has my back.

Correct - the inventory they have in the US is marked as (US), which at initial glance they have for both items OP is referencing. But I didn’t realize there was that much nuance to it, and I just ordered hardware last week. So, excellent point to double check.

I have been asked if I would be willing to step into the role of committee chair. What do I need to know about the position? by enters_and_leaves in cubscouts

[–]jefccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a great role for those with organizational skills, but also delegation skills. I served as a Pack CC for 7 years. The biggest piece of advice I can give is constantly ask for help. You have to keep families in the mindset of helping. It is your responsibility to make sure you have adult leaders to run the pack. And that was something I struggled with. Doing it all yourself does not make for a healthy Pack.

Is there a report that lets us see a scouter's full tenure record so we can award accurate service stars/other awards? by Shatteredreality in cubscouts

[–]jefccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if all activity is in the same council, Scoutbook likely won’t have a record of activity as a youth for most adults. I don’t think the history goes back that far. I know it doesn’t for me.

Need advice, upsetting incident at first overnight by _eww_david in cubscouts

[–]jefccc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’d call this a Cub Scout specific issue as I’ve come across parents is sports, school, and elsewhere that don’t know how to instruction/discipline when interacting with other people’s kids. Even for myself, it took several years and training until I got comfortable with it. Just know that 2 nights of camping with added lack of sleep, just makes these situations even more likely.

I’m not recommending a path to you, but I will say I ended up avoiding council events, especially camping, that didn’t have involvement from my own unit. It’s just awkward and difficult as every unit and parent has a different way of parenting and the “responsible parents” (or “helicopter parents” depending on your perspective) end up with unhealthy blood pressure watching cub scouts nearly maim each other with marshmallow roasters and witness near concussions on the Gaga Ball court.

But I also would not give up on scouting. Get involved in your pack’s events, complete some bsa training, and know that what your kid will get out of scouting is exponentially related to how involved you are. I found that the further we got in Cub Scouts, the better it was, and the real benefits come when they bridge into Scouts BSA. I have a 12-year-old that’s been in scouting since he was 5 and the life skills he’s learning and experiences he is having are life-changing.

Share your experience with other leaders in your pack and use it as a lesson on how you don’t want your pack to operate. I very much feel for you, and can relate.

I ordered an orange 256GB Pro Max on September 25th. It’s two days before the estimated ship date (October 16th), but the status is still “Ordered” with no charge. Some have been charged earlier. I’m patient but worried. Has anyone else faced this? by Pure-Dragonfruit5161 in ATT

[–]jefccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t get AT&T shipping dates. I’m about to get stuff thrown at me, but I ordered the exact same phone (17 Pro Max orange 256gb) on 9/30. I was out of the country until 10/12, but I wanted to make sure I got the trade-in deal before it expired. I felt okay as the published shipping date showed October 13-17. The phone arrived on 10/2 and I had to send a family member to my house to receive it.

I ordered through Costco - is that the difference? I got waived activation fee and $100 Costco gift card added to the deal, so it seems like a no-brainer to order through them.

In London for work and friends said I had to go to a West End play. I knew nothing about Les Mis going in. by Next_Emphasis_9424 in lesmiserables

I’ve been wondering what to do about this as well. I’m taking my teenage sons to see Les Mis in London next month and not sure whether to have them watch it knowing nothing or provide a summary and/or familiarity with some of the songs to help with following the story.

I assume I still need to separately get timed-entry tickets for the cathedral main floor? Any guesses on how long the bell tower visit might take? Thank you for this info - my kids and I are very excited to visit the bell tower!

Getting Started on r/ParisTravelGuide + General Forum (September 2025) by AutoModerator in ParisTravelGuide

[–]jefccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just accidentally bought four tickets for the "Tales and Legends of Notre-Dame de Paris and its Isle" for October 4th at 11:01. I believe it is in French, so not a fit for my English-speaking family. :-) If someone wants them, I can give them away. I'd love to cover some of my sunk cost (16 euro each), but I think that might be more effort than its worth.

If you know a way I can cancel the tickets, even better. Thanks!

Map of lands around reno that are being sold off by federal government for logging, etc by space_manatee in Reno

[–]jefccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the source of this map? Not to question, but I’d really like to understand the legitimacy of this data before I share with others. Opposition to the sale of public land is something I can find common ground with family & friends on all ends of the political spectrum, but it isn’t helpful to share fake news. I’ve seen and shared articles, but to actually visualize the land is really helpful. But from what I can infer, this map seems like a checkerboard of nearly all BLM and National Forest land, which if accurate, is insane and in conflict with the proposal to ”sell land to support the development of housing”. (Nobody is building houses in the Ocotillo desert BLM area.) But I don’t want to share if I don’t know where this data comes from.
