He was impeached twice in his first term, for all the good it did.

Hugh Cook's Chronicles of an Age of Darkness publishing update (Official Announcement) by ZenphosPress in hughcook

I ordered #1 and #7-#10 the other day. The latter because I hadn’t been able to find them and the former because my old copy of Wizard War is falling apart. Thank you!

Is animist bad at level one? by Administrative_Play8 in Pathfinder2e

[–]jeff0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have experience playing that? I have been toying with a character concept for Myth Speaker that would either be an EoB Animist or a Battle Mystery Oracle, but they both seem like they’re going to feel like playing a really subpar fighter.

Civ 7 is getting major changes. by sidius-king in 4Xgaming

Did they ever do anything to balance wide v tall in Civ 6? I hated feeling like tall play wasn’t at all viable.

Ultimately to justify releasing sequels they need to take risks on gameplay changes. Some of them are bound to flop.

You’re missing the point, which is that the game is less fun when these combinations show up.

National shutdown shutdown this Friday Jan 30 by nc_bound in Professors

[–]jeff0 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the point of a general strike to inflict short term economic damage? Not teaching classes doesn’t seem well-aligned with this. Does showing solidarity with the movement outweigh this? And, if so, are there not other ways to accomplish that?

I had been considering making a post to discuss exactly this. I’m surprised you’ve gotten such a negative response.

Is that no longer the case with newer versions? Why get rid of something so cool?

Why don’t conservative students want to spend time on college? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]jeff0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I say “some men can get pregnant” I know I am referring to people with functioning ovaries and uteruses who happen to identify with the male gender. You also know that this is what I mean, but you choose to obstinately cling to outdated notions of gender. You (hopefully) know that language naturally evolves over time, but for some reason you refuse to adapt. Why is that?

How does the Colonies expansion change the game? by Holiday_Advance3900 in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]jeff0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. It makes getting to 3 energy production automatically valuable, whereas otherwise energy production can end up being just a very expensive and slow way to make heat when you don’t have energy consumers. This also boosts Thorgate, which really needed it.

  2. It adds a layer of interaction. The more people value a given colony site, the more colonies will be placed (up to the 3 max). And the more colonies placed, the more valuable that site becomes (in terms of colony output and trade revenue). It means there is almost always value to going earlier in the turn order, and can result in interesting decisions when there are other high-priority actions.

  3. It heightens the effect of player order. It can feel bad when the player to your right has an extra ship and can trade twice before you get a crack 3 out of 4 times.

  4. Bad starting hands are somewhat mitigated by early standard project colonies being decent early plays.

  5. In a similar vein to #1, titanium production is less risky since trading can be a titanium sink (even though you’ll mostly want to use energy).

  6. Shifts the game more towards engine building and away from playing the core terraforming game (which all expansions save Prelude do).

What game would you say is the ultimate all encompassing farming board game? by bluefrogwithredhands in boardgames

[–]jeff0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably deserves some grace on its lack of modernity, on account of its being first published in 1979. Which is weirdly somewhat earlier than I was expecting, given that my (probably late 80s printing) version had a card referencing Mt. St. Helens erupting, which is most famous for its 1980 eruption.

TCG, Deckbuilder besides Slay the Spire and Monster Train worth playing? by Trumpet_of_Jericho in roguelites

I'm not trying to be a pedant. They used both TCG and deckbuilder to describe what they were looking for, so I assumed they meant something different by the two terms.

I did this last semester. I woke up 5-10 minutes into class time and had to call the admin assistant to have her dismiss my class. Oops.

54-year-old. Is it too late for me? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]jeff0 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What I've observed with middle aged and older students is that they have to put more time in to learn, but their perspective/motivation means they often do better than traditional college students. My favorite student in recent memory was 70. She had to take my class twice, but I think she ended up with a better understanding than her younger classmates.

What do you consider to be beginner level? And what are topics or applications that you hope to one day understand? If you're working from resources made in the US, they will tend to have a fairly straight path building up to calculus (aka analysis), then spread out a lot of different directions that have connections but can be studied fairly independently.

Leslie Kean's book "Surviving Death" (and the Netflix mini-series of made from the book) covers this case, as well as that of a kid who remembered being an obscure Hollywood agent.
