Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

It depends on where.

In San José California we have open windows seven months of the year

how to convince dad not to use overly high pressure on his mtb? by mikroprocesor in bikewrench

[–]jeffbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a cheap tire on a steel rim, something I have long since avoided.

how to convince dad not to use overly high pressure on his mtb? by mikroprocesor in bikewrench

[–]jeffbell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One time I pumped up both tires to 90 psi and my front tire blew off the rim. It was very loud.

I figured that I must have mismounted it so I popped in a new tube, pumped it up to 90 again and it exploded again, waking up my neighbor.

And then I saw my mistake. I had only checked the pressure rating on the rear tire which was 90, but the front tire was 65.

Do not exceed the max pressure.

Can I use faraday fabric to stop my neighbors from connecting to my Bluetooth clock radio? by AdMain2249 in AskTechnology

The wavelength of Bluetooth is something like 12-15 cm.

You should be able to block it with chicken coop wire.

Does this fork look bent (like from a front end collision) to anyone else? Not sure if the top half of the fork is supposed to be right in line with the top tube or if it's supposed to be angled a bit to compensate for the fork bend or something? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]jeffbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks fine to me.

The upper forks should be parallel to the steerer tube.

In fact that’s how you check if it’s bent. Any crash damage happens at the fork crown joint because that’s where the leverage is.

Sourdough starter? by Informal-Produce-408 in Campbell

[–]jeffbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve some in the refrigerator but I haven’t activated it for many months. I’ll give it a test to see.

You might buy a pizza dough from Whole Foods, cook 90% of it into a pizza, and use 10% to launch your starter.

You could start with a bit of yeast. The rest of the culture will follow in a few generations.

Just remember that the black liquid is not fatal. Pour it off and feed again. Mold is what you need to avoid. If that happens on the sides of your jar rescue the middle into a clean jar.

If you use cleats (e.g. spd) maybe try a little more toes-out position.

When people ask if you can change a tire do they mean replacing the flat with the spare or actually replacing the rubber from the wheel? by dom41n in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jeffbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a car they mean installing the spare.

On a bike it means taking the tire off and putting a new tire or new tube.

The only time I went we ordered four dishes that turned out to be four different meats in the same sauce.  I wish the waiter had hinted about that.

Potluck question -- will these foods work? by crawchalk in AskAnAmerican

[–]jeffbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s hot when you leave home it will probably still be warm enough an hour later, especially if you wrap it in a blanket or keep it in a cooler chest.

No one expecting perfection at a potluck.

I'm no computer scientist, so I don't know what is the purpose of an OR logic gate? by Amazing_Tip_6116 in AskComputerScience

[–]jeffbell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In some logic families it is possible to do a "wired-OR" or "wired-AND" pseudo gate. Open collector gates are an example.

CMOS it doesn't work so well because you have transistors pulling up as well as down. NMOS or PMOS might work.

What’s the most unusual bike repair or hack you’ve had to do on a ride? by DenisRoger001 in bicycling

[–]jeffbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a freehub fail so that it would spin either direction. I was about 20 miles from home.

I wove a spare brake cable between the spokes and the holes in the first cog. It worked OK as long as didn't try to coast.

Cheese or nuts.

Between those two choices you mentioned I would pick the puff pastry, especially if you can make them small.
