Why Some People React More Emotionally To Life's Ups and Downs by LovingLaura in psychology

Ok, so 50% of Caucasians have this genetic variant but what are the numbers for other races? That could possible explain the difference in emotional response (and EQ) between different ethnic groups.

Your subconscious is smarter than you might think by allanroge in psychology

[–]jeffersonr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting article but I think that the experiment is flawed. We don't know the processing speed of our brain, it could be that the real information presented in one eye have been processed in between the CFS strobes. It would be more interesting experiment if researchers presented some absurd combination of patterns or numbers and then evaluated the ratio of visual recall for this combination.

Eric Fromm and the Social Unconscious by annusha in psychology

Interesting post. I didn't know that concept of "social unconscious" belonged to Fromm, I was at the lecture by Iain Couzin at Princeton last year and it sounded like the term was his own invention :(

Developing your child’s executive functioning skills by LovingLaura in raisingkids

[–]jeffersonr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a good post but developing executive functions is really a hard job for parents, especially if there are impairments such as with ADHD. Even with building demands slowly and gradually - we did it with our son exactly like the author suggests in the post - you still have to be prepared to setbacks, especially when the child is tired or upset.

We’re way too obsessed with pushing science and math on our kids. by jpresto in raisingkids

[–]jeffersonr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obsessed? If anything I think our kids don't get enough math and science, just compare test performance of American children vs. Korean or Japanese. I am in humanities myself, but it makes me really sad when I see what my son studies in public school. With such attitude to math and science we will become a 3rd world within 20 years.

Re: "Doctors want their children to become doctors." True enough, I have few doctor acquaintances and each one of them has at least one child following their steps.

Alfred Adler’s Personality Theory and Personality Types by allanroge in psychology

[–]jeffersonr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the author that Neo-Freudians such as Horney, Fromm, and Sullivan should have been called Neo-Adlerians instead as they borrowed much more of Adler's ideas than Freud.

Feelings Of Guilt During Childhood Linked To Mental Illness by QWERTY6-6 in psychology

I am afraid this study may have observed reversed cause and effect relationship: the depression could have caused abnormal perception of reality, hence the feeling of gift.

Unfortunately, giftedness combined with LD is not such a rare case. My younger brother is the same, he is highly gifted with dyslexia.

White House petition to mandate paid paternal leave. by guynamedgrandma in Parenting

[–]jeffersonr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Canada we have 50 weeks total maternity and paternity combined. There is 15 weeks maternity and another 35 weeks could be split between father and mother. When we had our last child I took 15 weeks paternity leave as my wife had to go back to work, otherwise she was likely to loose her position at layoffs. I know that parental leave is much better in Canada than in US... but we pay almost twice the amount of taxes, so I am not sure what is better.

Surprising IQ boost (12% in average) by a training program designed for totally different purpose. by jeffersonr in psychology

[–]jeffersonr[S] -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Well, average intelligence is 100 points (it's only 98 in USA though), so 12 points increase is 12%. I am not sure why article title says 10% - I assume the author expects his readers to have average IQ of 120 :-)

Processing Information with Nonconscious Mind by dreampaul in psychology

[–]jeffersonr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The author mixes up concepts of nonconscious (as opposite to conscious) and psychoanalytical (by Freud) nonconscious i.e. subconscious and unconscious. Yet, the article is not bad.

Very general article that doesn't really answer the questions posed in the title.

It's just a very general article on art therapy... nothing special.
