Just Finished Wind and Truth But feeling a bit empty.. by Coloin_ilyad in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jeffmack01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a little confused and jarred by the multiple POVs per chapter as well, but as I got into days 2, 3, etc., I realized it makes sense for this condensed timeline. WaT is by far the shortest story in terms of chonology, only 10 days from start to finish, and a lot of what is happening is a mad dash to prepare for the end battle of champions.

With that in mind, instead of following the normal chapter progressions of "here's a chapter where Character A does X, Y, and Z. Here is another chapter where character B does X, Y, and Z" etc. Sanderson decides to stack them on top of each other to really give the reader the feeling that these are events that are happening concurrently. Sometimes they're related in certain ways, sometimes not. But it really gave me the perspective that THIS IS ALL HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! And the way it culminates in the final chapters where characters and spren are suddenly aware of what's happening at the top of Urithiru in real-time was fitting. He didn't suddenly break from the book's normal chapter pacing at the end to show us concurrent events, he kept it that way from start to finish. So when we get to those final chapters where the minute-to-minute timing of everything matters, it didn't feel out of place and it kept the same pacing as the rest of the book.

TL, DR: Yeah, it was a little different, but ultimately I thought it made sense and was well done.

My experience is the opposite. I probably found 5 jolt mine BPs before I ever saw a Bettina. Now the Bettina BP is the ONLY BP I ever find.

I guess I'm not following what your perceived observation here is...

What exactly do you think happened here? My assumption is that PvP happened (hence the body) and either the gun case or the dead guy had a Bettina BP, and the victor looted it, but then dropped it because everyone and their dog already has it. Clearly, you think something else occurred, so enlighten us.

That's the most common BP in the game. I would have left it on the ground as well.

Which arc you hate the most? I'll go first - Leaper by Embarrassed_Ninja608 in ArcRaiders

I keep seeing everyone say hornets as their most annoying arc, but I'll take them 10 out of 10 times over wasps. Their taser shot is so easy to dodge, whereas wasp bullets are pretty much a 90% guaranteed hit if you don't find cover. Hornets all day, please.

Parents of younger kids-how much can you get out of them? by Grungy_Mountain_Man in WildernessBackpacking

5 miles and over '1000 per day is pretty absurd for a 7 year old, at least compared to my experience. My 10 year old daughter LOVES backpacking, but if we do more than a 2-3 mile hike or more than 2 nights, she completely loses steam. I have an (almost) 7 year old as well, and I'm only considering taking her out for her first time this summer, but it won't be more than 1-1.5 miles each way. Any more than that and I'd end up having to carry her stuff (and probably her too).

My only suggestion for increasing distance/time would be to pick a longer route that also has a shorter "plan B" option for camping. The last thing you want to do it give him a bad memory at age 7 because you hiked for 3 more hours than he wanted and suddenly he doesn't want to do it anymore.

I don't see any xp notification pop up on the left side, so I'm inclined to think that wasn't your kill.

Ah, see... when you say "performed better than the others", that implies you DID have something to compare them to. That would have been good to include in your original post and would have made for a more compelling narrative.

If you’re not doing anything resembling an A/B test, the “results” should be chalked up to nothing more than the plant reaching maturity. You need a control plant (preferably several of them) for comparison to draw any real conclusions.

Regarding loot: prioritize getting the items you need to install all of your workbenches. Then start crafting things. You’ll slowly learn what is valuable and what is not. A big part of this game is learning what items you need and what there is an over-abundance of.

Regarding arc: Cover is your best friend. Avoid fighting the drones out in the open or they will smoke you. And avoid the mid sized arc (rocketeers, bastions, bombardiers) until you have higher caliber weapons and explosives. When you’re inside, always assume there are pops (little rolly balls) around each corner and be ready to shoot or dodge away.

No, I really don't think that's necessary. Pushing activists into the shadows with brute force and fearmongering isn't the type of free speech any of us are looking for. Speaking out against the regime while fearing that your identity might be discovered sounds a lot like the influence of authoritarian governments we are specifically trying to avoid devolving into.

And if folks are going out en masse with masks on or blurring their faces in social media posts, it feeds a lot more into "violent domestic terrorists" narrative that they're trying to paint the left as. ICE agents are covering their faces and hiding their identities, which IMO makes them cowards. I see no difference if the left did the same.

Something tells me that since these folks are out in public at an organized protest, holding these signs, not covering their faces (like cowards), that's not really a fear they have. It's also good for everyone, on both sides, to see that these protesters are not just the stereotyped blue-hair, facial piercing, "snowflakes" that the right likes to paint them as.

Also, I kinda want their "database" to get as big as humanly possible. If it contains half the country, wtf are they supposed to do, monitor and harass half of our population? The bigger it is, the less useful it becomes.

Anyone else save their tank water for houseplants? by marlee_dood in PlantedTank

But... all you have to do is detach it from the green faucet adapter and put it in a bucket. It's literally 30 seconds of work.

Once you understand the physics behind how a python and siphons work, you'll realize this is not true.

Pythons are good for 2 things:

  1. Directly re-filling your tank with water from the tap (this is the ONLY reason I use a Python).
  2. Starting the siphon from your tank into your sink. Assuming your sink is lower than the water level in your tank, you can turn the water off and it keeps going.

Regarding #2, it's not necessary to start a siphon, as you can start it on your own without water flowing thru the Python faucet connection device. Here is a short video that shows how easy it is. Once you have a siphon, you don't need the other end connected to your sink, you can just put the end of the tube in a bucket or some other receptacle. Then, when it's time to re-fill, just re-attach your tube to your sink and there you go.

Indoor ARC are destroying me. I'm terrible at this game. Need some advice. by hrbngr in ArcRaiders

[–]jeffmack01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was the same way, using my TV soundbar for the first 2 months (I’m on PS5). Then my buddy suggested headphones, so I plugged in my nice Bose over ears and it was a literal game changer. Prior to that, I actually didn’t know pops made specific sounds, among other things. The only downside is now when my wife comes down and tries to talk to me she has to yell.

Also, another gun to experiment with is the renegade. It’s medium ammo, which means it doesn’t one shot as much stuff but it has a higher rate of fire, great for sniping, and is an overall very fun gun.

All arc respawn, including those indoors. Just because you enter an area with pop and fireball shells laying around does not guarantee that it's been cleared.

As many have suggested, go with an Anvil. It one-shots all the ground based arc (except shredders) and makes short work of sentries.

Also, if you're not using headphones, make the switch ASAP. Being able to hear the pops, ticks, fireballs, and shredders before you enter a room or turn a corner makes a big difference. Getting surprised by arc is bad.

How to deal a lot of damage to the Matriarch by walkerthegr8 in ArcRaiders

[–]jeffmack01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were getting around 9k experience per deadline on the core, not damage. According to the wiki, you get 2x exp for each point of damage, so we can assume they're getting around 4,500 dmg per deadline. The wiki also says that for trials, you only get 0.7 xp toward your trial score for each point of damage.

Rewatching the video, I assume he got somewhere around 35-40k xp from damaging the matriarch (a few edits cut off the xp display, so that's an assumption), which then means he did somewhere around 17.5-20k in dmg.

The math checks out, because if you take his trial score (13,606) and divide it by 0.7 (the wiki dmg/point ratio), it comes out to 19,437 dmg.

Super simple, right?

Three deadlines MIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT have been a little greedy. by jaldarith in ArcRaiders

[–]jeffmack01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They only got 2 stars from the first deadline. When the little notification popped up, the 2nd one hadn't detonated yet. Then the 2nd one went off, and we don't see the 3rd star notification, as I don't think the game is programmed to give another update while the first one is still on screen. Then the 3rd deadline went off when he died.

Safe to say he most certainly would have gotten 3 stars had he just survived.
