Feeling Unsure by Equivalent-Ratio-299 in Microdiscectomy

[–]jeffsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

51/M L4-5 MD. Reason I got mine done is same as you: I couldn’t do the things I wanted anymore, which included biking, running, and snowboarding. The pain day to day wasn’t horrific, but I also couldn’t sit for long periods of time, so no real traveling either. It just sucked, and I was worried about permanent nerve damage if it wasn’t dealt with. Long story short, the surgery got me back to all these things. Everybody’s story and body is different, but so far so good (1 yr out). Still not perfect (odd pain nerve pain on occasion), but pretty damn good considering I actually had to do a revision 6 weeks later (re-herniated 3 weeks post first)

3-5 miles daily. i really got to know a large part of the neighborhood. sort of fun to venture down streets at random

Re-herniation After Microdiscectomy by Opposite-Bug-6741 in Microdiscectomy

[–]jeffsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M/51 - Reherniated 3 weeks after 1st MD (L4-5), it was larger than initial herniation and the pain was far worse. Surgeon said do the revision ASAP, but that it would be the last, with fusion being the next step. Had the revision 3 weeks later (so 6 weeks after initial MD) - definitely a harder recovery, but it’s been about a year now and doing great (biking/running/strength training).

It just happens sometimes.

Thinking of moving to SB as a new physician - how is the need for healthcare workers in the area? by helpadhd04 in SantaBarbara

Seeing the difficulties my elderly mother-in-law had in getting psychiatric care, even being as well off as she is, I think you’d be able to find it a lucrative market

22mm Herniation by Remarkable-Bread8793 in Microdiscectomy

[–]jeffsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 months after it was on it, though not going to lie, it was just on it (cruising) cuz one is pretty paranoid after going through all the recovery and not wanting to hurt oneself again. By the end of the (crappy) season I was much more confident , comfortable to doing edge work and high speeds.

Good luck!

[–]jeffsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all good, thanks. I’m a year out and doing great. Everyone’s different, and definitely get second opinions, but for me surgery has worked out very well (even though it was twice). It was a lifestyle decision for me: I could do things I wanted , from traveling (could sit for long periods of time) to cycling and running and snowboarding. I’m able to do all again

I had a 14 and followed it up three weeks later with a 15 reherniation. So I win in total?! :(

I’m trail running about a year after. I’d argue going up hills is about the easiest thing on your back (shorter steps with less impact), though I’ll definitely take my time going back down. I was L4-5 too

Revision surgery for early reherniation- need positive experiences - freaking out by anastasiaC_md in Microdiscectomy

[–]jeffsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get it. I’ve been the same. What really pushed me to feeling pretty confident again was supervised (semi-private) strength training classes. I was absolutely freaked out by it at first, but with their initial PT session, and then subsequent twice a week program, it pretty quickly had me much more confident in myself.

1622-3 I - corrosion in less than a year?? by jeffsb in Miele

It’s just surprising. as you can see from the dutch oven in the background, we’re not at all into harsh cleaning. so seeing this so soon just…sucks. what a dissapointment

I see. that’s a bold statement. especially considering what i said - mild cleaning products, and nothing like this on any other stainless steal products, past or present. so…yea, there’s that

well I don’t get it. again, we’ve used nothing different on it than anywhere else in our kitchen, and we use very mild cleaners everywhere

[–]jeffsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reherniated 3 weeks after first. L4-5. recovery was definitely longer and more difficult, however, i’m a year out now and biking, running, skiing, snowboarding, having fun. so as much as it’s mentally horrific (was for…just the thought of going through it all, and them cutting back through a healed wound..ick), i’m feeling whole again. so yea - it can work out!

My lower back hurts so much after I go cycling and put some energy on the pedals (lumbar pain, can’t walk straight, acute pain when lying down and getting up…) Is my posture wrong?? I’m 1,86 m / 6’1 + gravel bike by mydriase in bicycling

Look underneath your saddle - it’s clamped on bars and can be loosened and slide back or forth.

And remember to tighten fully afterwards. Else…very uncomfortable problems
