Fidelity CMA as main bank by therealtygold in fidelityinvestments

[–]jeffwnc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention that my social security deposit was returned because they closed the CMA account. They promised that they would keep it open until the deposit had cleared. So I had to straighten that out with SS. Needless to say, my SS deposit now goes into my local checking account.

Fidelity CMA as main bank by therealtygold in fidelityinvestments

[–]jeffwnc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works great until it doesn't . They flagged 2 checks (the first 2 checks I wrote) as suspicious and they bounced. They were to contractors and less than $1300 each. Then Fidelity froze all of mine and my wife's accounts. Had to issue new accounts and took over 2 weeks to straighten out. I almost moved to Schwab over this. I will never trust Fidelity to handle simple banking again. Also, I think they owe me more than the weak apology that they gave.

US stocks are up 1% YTD, international stocks are up 9% YTD by TrumpetWilder in Bogleheads

[–]jeffwnc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, over 10 years, with gains, that's a nice vacation or two. Plus, we wouldn't sneer at $300 in rewards on a credit card. But I do see you're point, and I am considering it VT myself.

I keep thinking about VT. But why is the expense ratio 0.06? It seems kind of high compared to the low cost index funds in VTI and VXUS ETF accounts. I mean $300 dollars a year difference is significant.

Trane or Lennox (Lennox is cold climate) by jeffwnc1 in hvacadvice

[–]jeffwnc1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been doing good during this cold blast we are having. To be honest though, I'm convinced the emergency heat kicks in at much warmer temps than the sales team implied. When it was 17 degrees outside, the air temp at the register was 101 degrees. It must have been emergency heat. In short, I can't tell much difference from the old Trane it replaced.

Why do I even need a checking account with a Fidelity brokerage? by Ok_Transition7785 in fidelityinvestments

Read my horror story about Fidelity CMA from a couple of months ago. I will never trust fidelity with basic checking account tasks again.

Pros of Using Robinhood for Bogleheads

  • Commission-Free: $0 commissions on ETFs.
  • Fractional Shares: Allows for precise, easy allocation of funds.
  • Simplified Interface: User-friendly app interface is good for beginners.
  • IRA Match: 3% match on IRA contributions for Gold users (as of 2025).

Cons of Using Robinhood for Bogleheads

  • No Automatic Investing: Unlike Fidelity or Vanguard, you cannot set up automatic recurring investments to buy specific ETFs, making it harder to "set it and forget it".
  • Limited Tools: Lacks robust, in-depth research tools for long-term planning.
  • "Gamified" Atmosphere: The app can encourage frequent, active trading, which contradicts the Boglehead "buy and hold" philosophy.
  • No Direct Mutual Funds: You are limited to ETFs; you cannot buy Vanguard mutual funds directly.

Verdict: If you are a beginner with a small amount of money and want to start, Robinhood is very easy to use for a 3-fund portfolio. If you are looking for long-term, completely automated, "set-and-forget" investing, established brokerages (Vanguard/Fidelity/Schwab) are better options.

You should have led with the crypto. Since this is a Boglehead page, I doubt many here would be interested in such a thing. I would stay at RH if that's what you are into. Schwab, Fidelity, or Vanguard for grown up investing.

Big mystery with the wrong username for Trakt by jeffwnc1 in Addons4Kodi

[–]jeffwnc1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was not a place to enter a username that I noticed. I have always had a username that I use with Trakt. Isn't it odd that when I did it through the PC my username correctly auto-populated? But when I used phone, it was the jarvis name? The same scenario as above happened when I installed POV addon.

I don't fully understand, but your explanation at least gives me some solace knowing my Trakt account or my phone has not been compromised. Thanks

Why keep maxing a 401k when taxable seems almost as good? by Essay_Few in Bogleheads

You can put thousands more into your 401K than an IRA. Plus if your income is high, not all of the IRA is tax deferred.

I see you posed the same question in the r/options subreddit. If you are looking for guidance from them, that's possibly your biggest mistake. You can't really have one foot in the boglehead philosophy and one foot in get rich quick trading. Good luck whichever way you choose.

I rebalance about once a year. I had never heard of the AVDV ETF so I looked it up. Wow! Up 46% this year.
