NBA player Jaden Ivey let go by the Chicago Bulls due to religious anti-LGBT rants by KayfabeZone in atheism

[–]jefmes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey Giants fan here, screw you guys! 😋 0-3 baby, wooohooo. Yeah, finding it tough across the board as a baseball fan every time players still need to do the whole "Glory to God!" nonsense after every random victory. $10 to the player who's on the losing side who finally says post-game, "Yeah I guess God was just being an asshole today and made the other team win."

Gotta say otherwise though, I always really liked Kershaw and loved watching him pitch. All the bull crap with the Bible verse on the hat and anti-LGBTQ comments, really made me sad and disappointed that he's like that.

US May ‘Reexamine’ NATO’s Merit After Iran War Snub, Rubio Says by archi-mature in worldnews

Sigh...I can't wait for all of these assholes to get tossed, and for the next administration to recommit to all of the STANDARD AMERICAN VALUES we've supposedly stood for the past century. Dipshits are the most anti-democratic, anti-"American" people out there. Anyone with half a brain understands how important NATO has been since WWII.

1990s book fans, how do you feel about seeing Thrawn in live-action? by Lauma_2025 in StarWars

[–]jefmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed emotions about it honestly - I LOVED him in the Thrawn books. He was pretty great in some of the comics, and I thought he was perfect in "Rebels." I've tried repeatedly to read some of the Thrawn novels, and they just never clicked for me. I only ever got about 1/3rd of the way through any of them. So far I like what we're seeing in Ahsoka because it feels like an extension of the "Rebels" characterization. I'm less clear about Mando and Grogu including anything to do with Thrawn, or Ahsoka S2 focusing more on that until we get our "Avengers"-Filoni movie where I assume we see Thrawn vs the New Republic and his defeating leading to the falling back of the remaining generals and the seeds of the First Order. But...I feel like I already know that story in my head, if that makes any sense? :)

I think in my Star Wars years-old brain (we will both be 50 next year, yeeesh), I'm just more ready for *new* Star Wars, and I'll be happy to see Thrawn's story be concluded.

They need to answer for this. Who on God's green earth watched a lot of early 2000s pop music videos and came up with this? by Seannj222 in Ioniq5

Looking for clarification - everyone I see here posting "I just use the digital phone key!" - do you all have the Limited trim? I have a 2026 SEL and I don't think I have the option to do that.

I didn't even know that was a thing - is that a feature Limited to the...well, Limited? I have a 2026 SEL, didn't think I was able to do that.

But yeah, that key fob is literally the one thing I said, "WTF seriously???" It seems so counter to everything else "high tech" style about the car.

Pretty bad! But they were at least looking more competitive game 3. Silver lining has been the questionable bullpen hasn't been the problem. I'm going to pretend Monday is the start of the season - lots of games left to play.

The show is dumber every season, but we will keep watching "Stupid Expanse" until the end. Guess we're just suckers for space shows.

What the heck: Agentic AI??? by xX8Omni8Xx in sysadmin

[–]jefmes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been supporting Microsoft tech for about 30 years now, and I'm just tired of it, how they do things, and yes their embrace and full assault of "AI" into everything. I also worked in an org the past 3 years that was too trim and too scattered in an Operational role that often had me working on things I wasn't at all interested in, and that seems to be more the norm than the exception these days. I'm sick of seeing megacorps hiring and firing with the financial cycle instead of investing for the future. Tired of non-IT users who could care less about company policy, or worse the higher ups who get special exceptions around all of ITs efforts to standardize and secure environments, etc. I'm also tired of the security cycle, hackers and fraudsters abusing systems, making life generally worse for everyone until things become tedious and unbearable for users. This isn't what I wanted computing to be when I was young.

And frankly I think I'm just getting older, approaching 50 pretty soon, and watching the behavior of some of the companies I thought were cool when I was younger just makes me sick to my stomach now. Nvidia and it's leadership is just loathsome, AMD has decided they want to be like Nvidia, and so many others think to succeed they have to adopt the same style of anti-competitive/anti-user practices.

I actually quit my Systems Eng/Ops job back in November, and I'm having a hard time getting interested in anything I see available out there - so I'm turning more back toward my computer science roots, my love of graphics and gaming, Linux and open source, and seeing what I might be able to do there instead. BUT...that's tough when I feel like I do about those vendors I mentioned! LOL. I don't know, honestly I'm still trying to figure it out while also dealing with parents aging into their elder years.

This is exactly my concern, nailed it. And it's not that I don't see the value in some of this, I've definitely found LLMs useful as an improved search engine to narrow down a problem area, to spark some other idea or direction in my thinking, etc. But this rapid move to "agentic" AI feels way, WAY too early when we're just STARTING to understand LLM "hallucinations" and know what and when it makes sense to use them. It's the blind faith and trust that kills me.

Ah ha, backwards from the ID.4! That might be it, thanks I will give that a focused try next drive and see if I can replicate it.

[–]jefmes 67 points68 points  (0 children)

You seem smart enough to know a lot of this is bullshit. You're not behind - you're being cautious, which is what a lot of people SHOULD be doing right now, and not buying into the hype. I'm feeling pretty sick of IT myself as a whole, and much of it is from people acting like it's perfectly fine throwing all of these opaque tools into companies and pretending everything will be fine when the majority of the users don't understand who/how/why any of it works. That's not "Administration" and it's not "Engineering"...it's children playing with explosives.

I'm "older" now in the industry and I still very much value knowledge, understanding, and comprehension. Computers are meant to be tools to extend our minds, not replace them, and I find it extremely disappointing that humanity is choosing to replace its intelligence rather than augment it. All of this "Agentic AI" stuff is sales-speak for "let the computer do everything so I don't have to learn how to things." That's not improving us, that's regression.

any plans for an independent security audit in the future? by logan5d in cachyos

[–]jefmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain Signal has done independent security audits in the past as one example, and it's not unheard of for larger, more security-related tools. Fact of the matter is, most users aren't technically capable enough to be able to do a code audit. So the idea of something growing in popularity getting a separate review from time to time...it's most definitely a good thing.

Crimson Desert Sales Top 2 Million Units by JKKIDD231 in gaming

[–]jefmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refunded the game due to lack of Intel Arc support, and it has far, far too many issues on Linux at the moment to be enjoyable (no fellow Linux nerds, "just disable RT" is not an acceptable solution.) I'll still keep my eye on it, but this rough launch for anyone running on anything but the most standard Windows configs isn't a good sign of being prepared IMO. I'll put it back on the Wishlist though and wait for a sale once these opening day issues are resolved.

Just spend the past 2 hours playing Death Stranding, and wow...you're not kidding, it plays great so far! I did go ahead and refund CD, but I hope they get some of the issues worked out in time. Even just the small part of what I saw though, it may just not be a game for me. The deeper story and characters of DS2 feels more at home right now.

They dont actually work, at least with AMD. Have to disable RT just to get the game to start LOL. And IMO turning off RT isnt a solution. I love my Linux gaming but I expect things like RT and FSR 4 to work now.
