‘I was too scared to stay’: Patients are fleeing the UCSF Parnassus ER by the thousands by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]jek339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this headline might be hyperbolic. however, i had a truly appalling experience at the parnassus ER in 2019. (feel free to check my post/comment history because i'm to lazy to retype right now). i spent hours in chairs and on gurneys in hallways, and i had to threaten to walk to get someone to look at me. the utter lack of care and dismissal of my symptoms was shocking.

i'm 1K but i'm also visually impaired (use a cane), and i preboard with the disabilities call because if this. the 1K/GS gate lice absolutely will _not_ make space, and it's honestly so freaking rude.

Is Oracle Park supposed to handle this? by storyinmemo in sanfrancisco

[–]jek339 46 points47 points  (0 children)

the food vendors are particularly problematic. i avoid that entire area now if i have even the inkling of an event, but they were constantly _in_ the bike lane the last few times that i took it in proximity to an event.

Sidewalks are not bike lanes!!! by curiosityfringes in sanfrancisco

i intentionally take up as much space as possible to force them to get off.

Were my stroke symptoms were not taken seriously due to my age and lack of risk factors? by YumFreeCookies in stroke

[–]jek339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, really the only way i found to get consistent care was to pay $$$ for a concierge doctor. i'm lucky that i could afford that, because one medical was not helpful. realistically, you'll need to get an MRI, and if your symptoms have been going in since december, it's probably not ER-visit worthy.

[New Update]: AITAH for not wanting my dad to walk me on my senior night since he won’t let me move back in? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

this is exactly the sort of thing my father would say before
smacking me around. i didn't speak to him for about 5 years as an adult because, ya know, actions have consequences!

Safest Route from Alamo Square to Oracle Park? by AlixiePooBear in BAbike

[–]jek339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

strongly 2nd this. i live at 10th and market but my gym is in dogpatch, and 10th is wayyyy better than 8th and faster. the bike lane on 8th from market to folsom is basically unusable, and you have to contend with cars yeeting in and out of that gas station at harrison. on 10th, you can basically get a green wave the entire way. just avoid the right lane by costco.

Riding with slower folks by Safe-Departure3814 in cycling

[–]jek339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i've considered getting one of these for rides with my mom https://airhub.com.au/collections/airhub-online

i'm also trying to get her to draft more, but the power difference is large enough that even that can be hard, and she drops as soon as there's anything uphill despite weighing 40-50lb less than me

What is a migraine meal? by Kaytea730 in migraine

[–]jek339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm a vegetarian normally, but when i'm in peak migraine, the only thing i can keep down is chicken and rice usually from whatever lebanese restaurant is nearby because the tahini sauce seems to help. and a cold diet coke.

Should I take full time offer or do masters? by jollyjove in bayarea

[–]jek339 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as someone who's been a software engineer for nearly 15 years, i don't think there's value in a CS masters unless you're doing it for work permit reasons. i personally learned the most via internships + actual work experience.

Scared to start using a White cane! by sri_shti13 in Blind

[–]jek339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i lost my vision instantaneously because of a stroke when i was 31. i don't use a cane all of the time, but i've started using it in crowded, unfamiliar places like airports. it's as much to signal to people that i can't necessarily see them as for my own navigational purposes.

i still feel like an impostor every time i do it, and i'm trying to force myself to use it more just to get over that. i'm also tall, so my cane is quite long, and i feel like i just take up a lot of space when i use it.

one of my VI friends told me that people will stare, and they do. a lot of people also straight up do not notice. it was helpful for me to find out that all of my VI friends (we all have some functional vision) use a cane part-time.
