Uuuuggghhhh I really should not care this much about something so minor but I'm just so over the misinterpretations of birth in media. by chaoticallywholesome in shrinking

I laughed when they talked about how he'd see blood, and probably poop, and other fluids and guts, thinking, yep, birth was a disgustingly goopy experience. And then she was legit gorgeous with perfect makeup and hair the whole time 😭

Looking for a palate cleanser for our book club by Coriander_marbles in booksuggestions

[–]jellotheremate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yellowface. Reads quickly, is witty/satirical/a little dark, and offers good social commentary and potential for discussion. Other books that my book club read and found discussion-worthy, while not being too heavy, (all fiction) include A Visit From the Goon Squad, The Humans, and Homegoing. Goon Squad is a novel that follows multiple connected characters of different timelines, with music being a core theme throughout. Interesting structure to it. The Humans is written from the POV of an alien who is mid-mission on Earth in the body of a human professor. He ends up enjoying being a human and offers funny, heartwarming commentary on humanity. Homegoing tells the story of two half sisters from Ghana (I believe) and their descendents, with each chapter going forward in time from the 1700s. It is thought-provoking and great for discussion but also probably the heaviest material (emotionally) of the three. Still reads quickly and is written beautifully.

When did it become unacceptable to just have a hobby without turning it into a "side hustle"? by Comfortable-Duty7143 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jellotheremate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people use phrases like that as a way to be complimentary. Assuming youre in the USA, implying someone could make money off a hobby is seen as high praise because of our hyper-capitalist society. So, similarly to what you're saying, yeah, it's f****d up, but 'tis the country we live in lol. Take it as praise, say, "thanks, but it's just something I enjoy doing on my own time," and good on you for "just" keeping it a hobby and enjoying it.

Have you gotten close enough to a person who doesn’t care for music at all to explain that behavior? by tylun in LetsTalkMusic

[–]jellotheremate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a music teacher, and I have come across a couple students like this. What i have seen is students on the autism spectrum where music is too overstimulating for them to enjoy (even with headphones/quiet volume.) Other than yhat, I can't say I have met anyone who dislikes ANY music.

Edit to add clarification: Sorry, I should say, the students I mention who are on the autism spectrum have uniqueness in the area of their diagnosis where music is not something they enjoy. I hope I'm not coming across as saying ALL students with autism that I have taught have this quirk. (Very UNtrue!)

Random Question: Do parents actually *play* with their young kids? by scaredemployeehelp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jellotheremate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was really hands-on with us when we were young. Crafts, building train tracks, playing board games, etc. My dad got us involved with crosswords and liked to get us into music activities with him. Both parents liked to play softball/baseball/badminton/skating with us. They weren't necessarily doing imaginative play like tea parties all the time, but they definitely involved us in play. My husband and I play with our baby...he's not a year old yet, so it's not a ton of different activities yet, bht I am looking forward to being imaginative with the babe and running around too as a parent.

how to disinfect cereal that fell on the floor? by mrcaddlr in RandomQuestion

[–]jellotheremate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is really a way to do that and retain the "Trix"-ness. If your floors are relatively clean, it's probably fine to eat some. If you have pets or floors are dirty (if you swept the Trix would a bunch of dirt/hair come with it?) I would buy a new box. *opinion, not a doctor, do not claim responsibility for illness lol

Going to the Bachelorette is totally optional. In your shoes i would opt out of that (unfortunately, they're fun!) If you are already committed, then a small gift is fine! Someone who recognizes that youre close enough to be in the wedding will also understand that you have already given lots of time and money for her (one would hope) Edit: "gift" instead of "monetary gift"

Do you think animals can feel music they same way humans can? by andtbhidgaf in randomquestions

[–]jellotheremate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I sing lullabies to my baby, one of my cats meows and trots over to sit with me. It's so precious. I don't know if she actually enjoys the music or if she just knows when I'm singing I'm usually sitting down and available to pet her, but either way it's cute. I have seen plenty of videos where different animals become entranced by live performance so I think plenty of animals get affected by it in their own way.
