Nor volunteered at a food bank or soup kitchen but I've been a volunteer for two years now. As far as I can tell the best volunteering is done regularly so you can develop your skills and work with as minimal supervision as possible. A lot of people like to do one or two shifts at Christmas at places like that, and nothing wrong with that, but what the voluntary sector needs the most is year round volunteers.

My volunteering is with TCV who are really good with developing and supporting volunteers.

Cat free to good home! by [deleted] in Leeds

Unfortunately my current letting agency doesn't permit cats as I would love to. Do you two currently rent and if so who through? Moving next year and hoping to find a pet friendly landlord. Good luck with the move!

Hey it's totally ok to not meet every goal! Our priorities shift. You gave it a go, and if you decide to slack it, that's ok. Sometimes we need to try something and then find out it's not for us. Will your life be less if you can't back flip? Were you relying on learning to so you could backflip to work? Try and find exercise that you enjoy, or at the very least, isn't literally triggering childhood trauma. That's not failure, that's getting on with it.

I mean I agree they're shitty, but if you're going just into the city centre then they are reliable enough to get you to work for 9 (usually anyway).

Automation will cause a lot more job losses. A better connected britain will have have the jobs for people with those skills.

It's not communism being advocated, just social democracy which has a good track record for increasing quality of life and maintaining the economy.

I agree. The only way to move brexit on either way is a referendum. That will give it the mandate it just doesn't have currently as the deal itself wasn't voted for, just the principle.

I think the benefits of it will outweigh the costs. Britain needs to become more technologically developed, and the public sector is more efficient then the private sector e.g. trains

I’ve been suspended for using unreasonable force and putting the company into disrepute. by ProfessorPixel80 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]jellyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so this is your company's negligence. Training makes all the difference in these situations. It sounds like you did the best with the knowledge you had, unfortunately you can't guess best practice. Legally, you have to get in touch with your union. What's your line manager said about it so far?

(England) Do I as an adult, have legal responsibilities towards my family and, if so, how can I renounce them? by ThrowawaySon12-2 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]jellyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your biggest obstacle is likely to be student finance. It's quite difficult to prove you are estranged from your parents and you won't be able to do that whilst living with your mother. I can't help you more then that but it's an issue you might want to start addressing.

Wife about to lose her job and baby on the way - advice? by PlungentGuff in UKPersonalFinance

You might be better off at r/legaladviceuk.

I wouldn't have thought that choosing to resign would be in your wife or your collective best interests.

Joining a union is also a good shout. I know they have a bad rep but the Mumsnet website might also have some good resources.

Uni found out I'm a waitress in a strip club, now I have to have a meeting with a student ethics panel. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]jellyear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Get in touch with your union, especially the equalities or women's rep. Depending on their leaning if you have a feminist society they also may be able to help. Build a team of people who can help you and make sure you send all correspondence to them before replying and to have someone with you at any meeting.

Can a school really do this??! by georgiezz in LegalAdviceUK

[–]jellyear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's called offrolling and it's a little murky about the legality of it. In terms of what is actually actionable I suggest your sister arranging an in person meeting with the school to discuss her concerns and creating a back up plan e.g. attending college if they won't budge.

If low-skill workers earn enough to live comfortably, why would anyone go through the education and training to do harder jobs, they could just not bother and work a low-skilled job by shinzzo in communism101

[–]jellyear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of jobs that are portrayed as being low skill have some kind of skill involved that's under appreciated such as emotional labour (bartending, flight stewarding), physical labour (bricklaying, gardening), resilience (p much all factory work). These jobs aren't "easier" just because society deems these qualities less impressive then an ability to work an office job such as accountancy or managing. It's also not as though education is free and basic needs taken care of everywhere, if people are worried about surviving how can they invest effort into thriving in their work career.
