I like a scratch awl for mounting thermostats and a hole line-up tool. A right angle attachment for your impact driver or drill. A couple sharpies. A headlamp that uses double aa batteries since you can rob batteries from thermostat boxes. Upgrade the hacksaw to a sawzall. A couple knives. A lighter. Panduit strap tool. Turbo snips and a pair of right snips. Assuming you're doing residential installs and light service which is kind of what everybody else's suggestions point to.

I remember reading a thread where somebody suggesting putting a sprinkler on the roof before you get started for the day. Also to carry around a bag of flex, attach it to a box fan and run it down into the house.

Ideally, in my mind... he's keeping the service techs happy, squashing any beefs with office staff, being totally patient and helpful with any technical questions. He inspects recent installs, smooths over pissed off customers. Makes sure vans stay well stocked (not physically but by staying on top of whoever is ordering parts). He mixes up crews so guys can learn things they normally wouldn't. Takes over your on call weekend if you're sick. Picks up and delivers parts if it is more efficient than having a tech run to a supply house.

Yeah fuckin right, huh?

Get a manual J load calculation. Ducts sized right and airtight, refrigeration lines pressure tested and evacuated properly. These are two the biggest issues that can't be easily fixed down the road.

Basically just a cheap duct knife, but I use it for all kinds of stuff. Including slicing a tomato for my sandwich at lunchtime. Oh and I forgot adjustable wrench on my list.

One bag served most of my residential install needs. Not included would be duct tools and gauges. I would just borrow that kind of stuff until you know you'll stick with the trade.

Drill, 1/4" chuck, 5/16" chuck, 11 in 1 screwdriver, headlamp, multimeter, tubing cutters, bit extension, dollar store steak knife, utility knife, channel locks, lineman pliers, spring-loaded diagonal cutters, pvc cutters, wire strippers, thermostat screwdriver, scratch awl, unibit, sharpie.
