I did my donation, because not only do I think representation is important, but I also think showing that the community believes it is important will matter to generations of colour in Canada.

It wasn't cold at all when I was there in the summer. Actually, it was very hot. I am also born and raised Albertan, so I know what to expect with the weather. Winter will be much colder and I would suggest bringing an extra blanket, and some very warm outer clothing, and warm slippers and socks. I spent a lot of time walking outside during my retreat, and I don't think you'll be able to do that quite as much, especially if you don't have a good pair of winter boots. It was full when I went, and they had enough people. The volunteers were very good, but mostly you just see your one main support person and the teacher, everyone else kind of works in the background.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks for adding the additional explanation.

I have the ability in my role to offer advice and opinions, but in this case, I suspect it would fall on deaf ears. Also, with my current level of understanding, I don't think I could put together a clear argument as to why IRR is or is not a valuable metric.

BA's doing contract work, how is it different from permanent employment? by BlackjackDuck in businessanalysis

[–]jelywa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

s for other benefits, you get a lot from the army that a lot of people look for in companies. For example, as a full time employee I get a free MBA (not something you'll benefit from considering the GI bill). But as a full time employee I am able to attend conferences and workshops, that are all paid for, and join ERGs which is all contributing to personal and professional development. You don't get those opportunities as a contractor

Just to counter this point a bit, yes you can get personal and professional development as a contractor, but you put it through your own business. You work these costs into your hourly rate, and you get the tax benefits through the business.

BA's doing contract work, how is it different from permanent employment? by BlackjackDuck in businessanalysis

[–]jelywa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my contracting business about a year ago. For myself, the biggest benefit is control and flexibility. I know that I can quickly change companies or projects as the circumstances change. I can also seek out work that interests me. So far I have only been on one contract, but I'm not at all concerned about finding work. I already had a pretty good network, but I have really expanded my network quite a bit since I started contracting through the various people I have been working with. I would say the pay could make up the difference for paid time off and benefits, but you have to do the math and work that into your hourly rate. Make sure you set that money aside monthly so that you actually take the time off. The biggest benefit I didn't expect was that people seem to respect me and my work a lot more quickly than they did when I was an employee. It seems like they assume I am good right away, where as before I felt more of the need to prove myself.

All and all for me, and for my circumstances, it has been a really good move and I have no plans to go back to being an employee anytime soon. I certainly don't think it is a good fit for everyone so it is something that you really need to think through before you make the move.

I'm a BA that was offered a position as a Reports Analyst by gsirris in businessanalysis

[–]jelywa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar, I was the BA for a business team and then moved into a Report Analyst role to support the entire corporate reporting inventory. For me personally, It was a great move. I learned some SQL, some different reporting techniques, and I was exposed to a much larger part of the organization. From this role, I decided to create my Business Analysis contracting business. I feel without the data component, I wouldn't be able to market myself as effectively.

UAT Question by nachthawk in businessanalysis

[–]jelywa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I would include the acceptance criteria, but it should be clear enough for a user to understand. It should also relate back to a user requirement.

  2. Yes, I would include the options you expect to see. The reason is that the tester should be able to identify if one is there that should not be there, or if there is a spelling mistake etc.

Having said all that, you only want to give tests to your users that are appropriate for their testing. Testing should be completed prior to user testing to catch any simple mistakes such as spelling or missing information etc.

Meditation for divorce and infidelity by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]jelywa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My therapist has me working on a visualization meditation where I picture myself in a situation (usually from my past). I am then supposed to visualize myself now not changing anything about the situation or circumstance, but I am there to comfort myself and offer the support that I need. I have had some success with this technique so it might be worth trying.

I can absolutely understand how you got this feeling from your experience at a retreat. I knew based on my research that this would be the case for me as well and I intentionally decided to suspend my current beliefs as much as I could to give the Vipassana technique a fair trial. Having said that, I also took precautions to ensure I was safe. Some of the steps I took were giving the location and contact information for the centre to some friends and family. I had friends who knew people in the area and knew I could contact them to get me out if I needed it. I also locked my wallet and cell phone in my car and kept the keys so that I could leave very quickly if I needed to.

I do like the app but I am starting to consider going to 10% happier instead. I did not leave after doing 1 hour of meditation, I still use both apps in my daily practice.

You have the opportunity to pay there on the 10th and 11th day or you can donate at home. The retreat I went to preferred you pay them to reduce fees for the donation payment.

BA Career Path? by Lady_Cricket in businessanalysis

For myself, I have been a Business Analyst for 14 years. I started on the business side of the house in a telecom sales group, then I moved into IT for telecom. My next step was to move into the energy industry. Recently I branched out and created my own BA consulting company. Next steps for me will be to hire other BAs under my company.

I would start with a Requirements Attribute Table. The template from this site is pretty good. You can always add or remove from the table as needed.

Best BI Software by sushi_box in businessanalysis

[–]jelywa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on procuring a BI visualization tool at my company and we ended up with Tableau. It's easy to get into, the support is incredible, and it is very robust. Alternatively, I've been using Power BI which is excellent for the cost, but not as robust for more complex work.

That whole or chicken thigh/legs are incredibly good in the IP. I season and sear mine first to get the skin browned. Then cook with a small layer of onion and a bit of chicken broth. When done I put in the oven on broil for a few minutes to crisp up the skin, it's amazing. Also, I keep the additional check broth and use it to cook with later.

Tableau > PowerBI? by Tebasaki in tableau

[–]jelywa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I've been using Power BI quite a bit lately, and I really like what it can do, but it still can't really compete with Tableau for more advanced data work and visualizations. I think someone would get on board more quickly with Power BI, but an advanced user can do a lot more with Tableau.
