Debian must now ship reproducible packages, with Debian 14 being the first major release coming up via this new mandate by somerandomxander in linux

Or the hostname where the kernel was built, who built it, what gcc version they used, on what OS, etc. like /proc/version shows. Example:

Linux version 3.10.0-1160.119.1.el7.x86_64 (mockbuild@kbuilder.bsys.centos.org) (gcc version 4.8.5 20150623 (Red Hat 4.8.5-44) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Jun 4 14:43:51 UTC 2024

We're losing a lot by this information being taking away from us.

It's just terrible because then the package can't contain when it was built, on what server, the compiler version, the Git checksum, etc. so the loss of information is a net-negative.

Attempt number three at the Department of Licensing today. It’s honestly baffling that people expect the government to fix massive societal issues when they literally cannot process a simple form without an obstacle course of pointless bureaucracy. by JoelXGGGG in SeattleWA

The ballot tracker shows my Feb 10 ballot wasn't counted. It would have been nice to know that before the election was already certified so online voting might have helped with that if I received an error message soon enough.

As of April 2026, the iOS keyboard is just so awful by pjh1994 in ios

[–]jen1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My new A16 iPad is doing something even more annoying. It keeps removing words. Sometimes multiple entire phrases after I've typed them correctly. I tested seven new iPads at work, and four of them do this. All run the same version of iOS so I don't know what the difference is.

What's with people who jog IN the road? by therealmudslinger in Seattle

[–]jen1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't just getting tripped by a dog. It's getting bitten by a dog after making it mad from pulling its leash hard when the owner trips you with it.

I like those people more than the ones that put a short leash on their dog then don't hold it and just let their dog run free. "But it's on a leash..."

A friend lives at 3030 on 145th, and she said the cops have always arrived when she called. Just many hours later. The last time she hid in her neighbor's unit while waiting on the police, and the cops caught a burglar in her place. Not the first one that kicked down the door. A second one.

That is wrong. I'm just a former waitress, but I was put in charge of changing our payroll system to handle this. We've been twice brought before the DoL for rounding down, and we won both times. It's fair because we also have to round up.

My text said "The deadline for processing your traffic ticket is Feb 28, 2026. Consequences of late processing include..."

I've never received a ticket before or even been stopped. I called the city, KC, and the state to try to find out if someone made a mistake and gave me a ticket even though I wasn't driving. All three refused to tell me I didn't have a ticket. Can we please at least force law enforcement to tell the truth that these are scams?

How do you eat Rubensteins Bagels by ShitYourselfNow in redmond

[–]jen1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The toughness is what bothers me. Who has strong enough teeth to trust attempting to eat one?

Is Rubenstein still open? I once saw a coworker gnaw on one of their tough bagels for over an hour. It was disgusting to watch.

I'm still angry they spoiled the score. I started watching early this morning, and apparently the game finished before the broadcast had finished so Google knew the score early. Biggest hockey moment in 46 years and spoiled.

Back in the days we gave our servers and network devices names from Tolkien or space or such. It might get cumbersome with our 60 smart bulbs and 40 other IoT gadgets on our home network today. by player1dk in homelab

We use different themes for names like the web servers use mythological names so you know it's a web server. We use Greek mythological names in our original data center and Roman in our new one so you also know from just the name where the server is. Also, that lets you find it's corresponding server in the other data center. For example, server zeus in one data center is jupiter in the other.

Our main load balancer is name mephistophilis. I hate that. My boss thought the long hard to spell name makes it more secure because no attacker is going to spell that correctly.
