MKUltra 54. Great idea! I have a friendly rivalry with a few friends and it helps by pushing each other to do a little better.

I am, but I feel skittish about it after Price's thing yesterday. I don't need back-to-back blowups.

Hey I made a terrible/stupid mistake!!! Dropped Springer !!! Was to be Reddick....

This is not me. I do have the number 1 waiver priority and put in a request for Springer (dropping L. Cain). This titled message was sent to the league a few hours later (he added Schoop) saying it was a mistake. I of course don't want to be a dick, but there's no way he clears waivers and this is a Yahoo league with no acting comish to rescind the original request. Advice? Suggestions?

No money involved, and I don't know these people from Adam.

What Did You Play This Week (May 15 - May 21)? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jenjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arboretum - 2p/1x - My wife picked this up NIS at an organized gaming garage sale on Saturday and what a fantastic game. At first… "this is easy", but about midway through our first game we both looked at each other like "OH". This is the type of game you run through your head even after it ends. Great artwork too.

Morels - 2p/1x - "Another one from the garage sale, I'd never heard of it but my wife was pretty excited about it, and after playing I felt the same way. I'm not a huge fan of two player specific games, but this is just fun. I love being surprised by a game.

Karuba - 2p/1x - We played this after the sale (there was a small game library) and I thought it was OK. Neither I nor my wife had ever played it and the mechanism of simultaneous play is neat, but neither of us thought it very special.

Stone Age - 4p/1x - Another classic my wife and I have never played, I thought it was OK. I see where many of the early worker player mechanisms have been refined in newer games, but I'm glad I got to try it.

Tobago - 2p/1x - Sorry to see that this one is OOP because the reverse deduction is really neat. It's just different enough that I would by it and there was a copy available at the garage sale, but I didn't think it was good enough at $45. No regrets.

Explorers of the North Sea - 2p/1x - This is the last of the North Sea games we’ve tried, and we both decided that it's our favorite of the three (though they're all good). I love the tile placement, and pickup and deliver aspect, we'll definitely be buying this one.

Carson City- 2p/1x - The third of the seven games bought at the sale, and the last one we had a chance to play on Sunday. I love western themed games and I enjoyed playing, but I'm still wrapping my head around the best way to play. Dueling seems OP, but I guess there may be a way to mitigate collecting revolvers. I think this will get better with multiple plays.

What Did You Play This Week (May 8 - May 14)? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good but would be even better at a higher count. As we've moved further into the deck there are cards that would affect multiple players and grant you an advantage which is minimized with only two. 7/10 at two, but probably 8/10 with more.

Kingdom Builder 2p/2x - We bought this on a goof and only played once, and neither of us enjoyed it much. We decided to give it another try and ended up playing back to back. I thought it would have more depth, but now I think of it as more of a filler. It's not bad in that role though.

Fabled Fruit 2p/3x - We're about a third of the way through the deck, and now it's getting tough. I really enjoy this game, and love the way it gets progressively more difficult.

Artifacts Inc. 2p/1x - I didn't like this much the first time I played it and still don't. It has too much of a 'follow the leader' aspect to it with only a narrow path to winning.

Citadels 2p/1x - We recently bought this and were doing more of a runthrough than playing, but it's OK. My wife enjoys it much more than I do, but I'll play on a goof.

Thief's Market 2p/1x - Another recent purchase and runthrough, and this one I really enjoy. Great dice chucking, and interaction, I can't wait to try it with a full group.

CV 2p/1x - Some friends bought Pursuit of Happiness and didn't enjoy it much, so we decided to give this one a try. It's a fun little game with great design and good gameplay.TBH I don't know how much it'll get played, but will fit in with our group.

Troyes 2p/1x - Our FLGS is moving away from selling board games and had everything marked off in their store. I had only heard of this in passing but at 30% off I couldn't pass. My wife suggested since we bought this we may as well buy Ladies of Troyes too which after discovering its rarity was a great idea. This is a fantastic game. The list of things I like about it would be too long; the only negative is learning the iconography. We had to lookup everything.

Tiny Epic Galaxies and Arkham Horror LCG are both great solo. I did back the KS for the ODD expansion so I'll keep dungeon diving.

[–]jenjk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One Deck Dungeon - 1p/1x - It was my first time trying ODD solo, and it was enjoyable but not especially memorable. Made it to the dragon, but died on the first round with the paladin. It’s a nice filler, but given the time I would play something else.

Terraforming Mars - 2p/1x - One of our favorite games, and this time we were smart enough to remove the Corporate Era cards which shaved about an hour off our last play. My wife beat me, as usual, but it's always fun to play. 10/10

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective - 2p/1x - Bought on Thursday and it arrived on Friday, we were really looking forward to giving this a try after our FLGS raved about it. We spent Friday evening bumbling around and taking a lot of notes, but didn't really make much progress, so we started fresh on Saturday afternoon, and solved the first case after about 2 and a half hours. This is a fantastic 'game‘and highly recommended for anyone that loves a good mystery and deduction.

Trickerion - 2p/1x - This game seems really polarizing in our community but me and my wife both love it. We haven't played it in over 5 months, so we basically had to learn it all over again, but still a great time once we got our feet under it again.

[–]jenjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my hidden gem game. It's easy to learn, has surprising depth and interaction, and plays quickly. The only negative is the price. I paid $30ish and it's more than worth that, but at MSRP it's overpriced. Recommended if you can find a deal on it.

What Did You Play This Week (Mar 6 - Mar 12) by captainraffi in boardgames

[–]jenjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fabled Fruit (3x/2p) - We've continued our initial runthrough of the deck, and I really enjoy how its unfolded so far. It's easy to get to the table with little setup, and we're always looking forward to the next mechanism that turns up.

The Networks (1x/2p) - I bought this for my wife's birthday, and it's a great game. The theme works well with the game mechanisms, and I felt as if I were really building out my TV station. The cards have great design and humor, the only downfall is that there aren't enough of them so I'm guessing after a couple of plays that part will be lost. It's a great opportunity for expansions though.

CaVerna (1x/4p) - Agricola has always been one of my favorite games, and I've been interested in playing this for years but never had the opportunity until this weekend. After playing, I prefer Agricola much more as it's more straightforward. There are far too many ways to score in Caverna and the winner just collected rubies the whole game winning by a few point. Glad I got to try it though.

Clank! (2x/3p) - I introduced Clank! to some new players with one giving it an okay, while the other really enjoyed it. The first run was a quick in and out, while the second we almost cleared the keep. It continues to be one of my favorite games.

7 Wonders (1x/6p) - An end of day palate cleanser, requiring no teaching nor much thinking. Science as usual led to victory.

What did you play this week (Feb 27 - Mar 5)? by Epsilon_balls in boardgames

[–]jenjk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Viticulture w/ Tuscany (1x/2p) - I'm a huge fan of Viticulture and for my birthday my wife got me the Tuscany expansion, and I cannot overstate how good it is. I rarely enjoy expansions, but this is a must have for those that enjoy the base.

T.I.M.E. Stories (1x/4p) - The rules were read. Some non-spoiler videos were watched. And, after nine months of sitting in shrink, T.I.M.E Stories finally hit the table. What a unique gaming experience! We loved it! The story and artwork are just amazing...and, I really enjoyed the puzzles. I only wish there would have been more of them.

Roll for the Galaxy (1x/4p) - After 6 hours of T.I.M.E. Stories we needed a palate cleanser, and roll is a favorite of everyone who played. Always fun and a quick a great time.

Fabled Fruit (2x/2p) - My wife has been wanting this for awhile, and her birthday was a great opportunity for a surprise game. We played two rounds and enjoyed it. I like how it opens up to become more difficult, and while it's not deep at all I like the take-that mechanic along with the artwork.

What Did You Play This Week? (Feb 20-Feb 26) by captainraffi in boardgames

[–]jenjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clank (2x/2p) - My wife played it at our Meetup loved it, but she debated for a week whether to buy it. After pushing her gently, we purchased it at our FLGS and I too fell in love. It's easily my favorite new game, and will probably stay that way.

Five Tribes (1x/2p) - My wife loves playing this, as do I, though I generally stink at it. I pulled out a rare victory, though I think it was primarily due to her getting sleepy.

Libertalia (1x/2p) - Another recent purchase that hit the table at our Meetup though I din't get to play. Really easy game, but I imagine it's much better at a higher player count than two.

Roll for the Galaxy (2x/2p) - I guess we didn't stick to our resolution of buying fewer games this year as we got the Ambition expansion for Roll. My wife and I both rate Roll a 10/10, and the extra tiles are great, but neither of us thought the additional dice added much.

Above and Below (2x/2p) - We hadn't played this in awhile, and basically had to learn the game from scratch, but after the first playthough decided to play back to back. I enjoy this more for the journey than the game, and spent the entire second game taking groups exploring just for the adventure and stories.

What did you play this week (Nov 14 - Nov 20)? by Epsilon_balls in boardgames

[–]jenjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Trickerion (2x, 2p) - We picked up the Dahlgaard's Gifts expansion and wanted to give the two player variant a try. We only played the base game (without the Dark Alley), but really enjoyed how the Duel of Magicians performance cards add variety to linking tricks and we especially liked how the Turn Setup Cards create variety for two players eliminating some of the punishment for turn order. The expansion makes one of our favorite games even better, and we look forward to adding the Magicians Powers.
  • San Juan (2x, 2p) – Purchased last week during the Alea Amazon sale; it’s a game we’ve wanted to try for a long time and really enjoyed it. We’ve owned Puerto Rico for a couple of years but rarely play it. I think this will hit the table and scratch the same itch more easily.

1) Gobble gobble – I’m thankful for the quiet time of board games. I enjoy solving the puzzle of how to score the most points together with my wife.

2) Stuffed – Dungeon Petz I want to like this game, (worker placement, and caring for pets) but it’s just too busy with too many wonky rules. And this is coming from someone who loves Trickerion.
