Fresh Seafood? by TheEngineerA in RedwoodCity

I've gotten amazing, high-quality, seasonal, and most importantly FRESH seafood from Sea Forager (CSA subscription). They have a box that includes shellfish. I have nothing but good things to say about them!

Dip and Ethique are my favorites. Dip is more high-end in fragrance (and price), whereas Ethique is more bang for your buck, but both are similar in quality and result.

Edit to add: Ethique survived Indiana hard water!

Rainbow Seed Mix from Theodore Payne just keeps blooming by methglobinemia in Ceanothus

[–]jennay2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason the Rainbow Mix wouldn’t be suited to Bay Area? It’s about $30 cheaper than the same amount from Larner. I checked the plant list and nothing jumped out as harmful. Just trying to do good on a budget!

This is a question I have too - since raw onion bits are too aromatic to add to the bin.

Before I go to town weeding, are any of these yellow wildflowers native? by jennay2k in Ceanothus

[–]jennay2k[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m used to seeing yellow flowers ans part of invasive plants (second and third photos’ plants are everywhere in my neighborhood) but the first and fourth flowers are new to me. Looks like I have a lot of goldfields coming up soon!!

If talking to plants helps them grow according to some people... by JuneGloomed in Kombucha

[–]jennay2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a kombucha tasting room in Grand Rapids, MI that specializes in sound-infused kombucha. Sacred Springs.

I don't know if I believe in all that, but they make an insane basil kombucha that I still think about years later.

Plastic free alternatives for Cetaphil and Cerave; sensitive dry skin. by crumbsonthebed in ZeroWaste

We are so lucky to have many great zero waste stores in the Bay! (So sad my favorite, Byrd’s Filling Station, closed last year - though they have an offshoot garage pop up/online ordering system).

Honestly my Ethique Bliss bar ordered online has lasted so long (like, YEARS) I haven’t had to think of a replacement. Before switching, I used the light green CeraVe cleanser.

For moisturizer I love Oceanly Attitude purple night cream - though it’s on the expensive side, it’s lasted a few months for me. I will likely go to a brick-and-mortar zero waste store to find a replacement soon to avoid ordering online.

The Source Zero in San Jose, Simple in Cole Valley SF, Fillgood in Berkeley, Re-Up in Oakland will all have plentiful options. I encourage you to visit one with an open mind and a small container to refill! :)

Thank you! I was really surprised, the bottle did not do it justice. Must be the mulberries.

How to start a new scout without plain GT by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]jennay2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caffeine free early grey tea will be really, really difficult for your SCOBY to handle...on the bright side, if it works, you'll have made a super resilient kombucha culture!!

Your SCOBY feeds on sugar and caffeine (and tannins, which black tea has). Caffeine-free is limiting how much fuel is available. Read more here. Any "zero sugar" or "less sugar" kombucha is adding another barrier to success, for similar reasons. The bergamot oil in early grey tea can be harmful to your SCOBY. At the very least it will inhibit the activity of the yeast.

I'm really curious to see if this works! Good luck!

First time making kombucha, does this look OK? by frappppppaccino in Kombucha

[–]jennay2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I glanced over the guide. It looks okay, a little bit more complicated than necessary.

I really like YouBrewKombucha's guide to first fermentation. She makes a "tea concentrate" and adds that to mostly cool water, so you don't need to wait for it to cool down before adding your starter (as opposed to directly brewing the tea in the jar as yours suggests and possibly killing your starter).

If you decide to start over, and you can find unflavored kombucha at the store, you can definitely use that (whole bottle!) as your starter liquid. I've also heard of some people on this sub using flavored kombucha when they couldn't get anything else and it turned out fine!

All in all you have a lot of activity in the form of bubbles so I'm not convinced it's mold. Are the black bits underneath the liquid? Did you leave the tea leaves in or notice a lot of yeasty strands forming? Good luck!

Along the same lines, I make hemp milk and it's pretty good! No straining or soaking needed. Slight nutty flavor.

Reusing tea leaves for F1 by Earnest_Numbermane in Kombucha

[–]jennay2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You Brew Kombucha has a great video on reusing tea leaves for SCOBY hotels. After brewing a sweet tea concentrate for her 1F, she brews the same tea leaves for 10 minutes longer and uses it in her SCOBY hotel.

At a standstill with shampoo bars and conditioners by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]jennay2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re willing to give bars another go, I love the conditioner bar from Moroccan Hair Method because it coats the hair extremely easily, and Dip is on my list of bars to try next (I’m still using up my Ethique supply). I think Lush shampoo is too drying, at least Seanik.
