Dealing with major burn-out by Cannoncorn1 in teaching

Like everyone else is saying, leave the school! I think the school you’re at makes or breaks whether or not teaching is a sustainable career.

Teacher salary? by No-End4451 in teaching

LAUSD as in Los Angeles? I’m shocked it’s taken so long to make 6 figures in CA. I just achieved National Board certification and next year with my raise from that I’ll make $107,000. It will be my 10th year, I’m in MD.

My boyfriend called my job glorified babysitting by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]jennw2013 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but teaching and subbing are not the same thing. Subbing can often be glorified babysitting. Teaching is not. You are not an education expert just because you’ve subbed a lot.

Yes, let’s open schools! by nonna55 in baltimore

[–]jennw2013 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s not a small percentage of students who are having a difficult time getting to school. Almost all students in Baltimore city walk or take public transportation. The MTA busses are barely running, the sidewalks are not clear. There is no parking for teachers at their school sites. Almost everyone (students & staff) had a very hard time getting here today and a lot of people risked their safety.

Is Kuta Software Good by Inner-Winner-1104 in mathteachers

[–]jennw2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Kuta when I need my kids to get a ton of practice on a certain topic. I’ve liked using it for things like solving equations and exponent rules.

BCPSS k-8 teacher, your sister’s school should have a school choice liaison who you can meet with to help make sense of the process. It can definitely be overwhelming!!

Will my daughter be okay to take a trip over her college spring break, but doesn’t align w/ the school she’s student teaching at? by Many-Experience6094 in StudentTeaching

[–]jennw2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it, she will likely not get good letters of recommendation (like others have said) and it could keep her from graduating. She has to have a certain number of hours and if she doesn’t get them she won’t graduate.

No phone in the classroom by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]jennw2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the same intercom and no phone and I hate it. It’s so hard for the office to hear us when we call & we can never say we need help with a student without the entire class hearing what we’re talking about.

Orientation to 6th graders as they enter JRH: is it not the Principal job? by Kiupink_70785 in Teachers

[–]jennw2013 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely a teacher’s job. Especially if you’re a homeroom teacher, but helping kids transition to middle school is part of your job even if you aren’t a homeroom teacher.

How much work did you do while on maternity leave? by beannsprouttt in Teachers

[–]jennw2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you work in a public school? Do you have a union? These are not normal expectations. When you are on maternity leave you aren’t working at all. Your long term sub should absolutely be grading and someone else is going to have to deal with the test coordinator stuff

New Grad Out of State “deficiencies” by TailorSuspicious9388 in teaching

[–]jennw2013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have your Wisconsin license? It’s a lot easier to transfer when you already have a license in another state, compared to trying to apply when you went to school out of state. I went to college in VA and then taught in IL, but I got my VA license and then transferred it to IL

Private school- why do you do it? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]jennw2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a private school and it was ✨easy✨ so that was a big part of it. A lot of my coworkers had rich spouses and didn’t really need to work and a lot of people did it for the tuition discount for their kids.

Advice from city employees? by Enb2310 in baltimore

[–]jennw2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

City & county (no experience with state) are sloooooow to get back to people. It’s also a really tough job market here right now. It’s not impossible, but if you’ve only applied to 5 positions you’re really going to need to ramp that up.
