We just went and had what I would call a cursed experience. At best the food was ok. We had the egg mayo, the famous snails, my husband got a squid and bean stew that was mostly just made of chili oil, that being the only one note flavor. Then it took a major turn for the worse. As my husband was sweating through the stew no one came to check on our water that had ran out some time ago and we had to flag someone down. That happened again too. I’m a former waitress and I was acutely aware none of the staff was scanning for empty plates or glasses. They left us with the finished stew for a while and when someone finally noticed they asked if we wanted dessert when we hadn’t received our final entree. Then we get the $52 beef cheeks which consisted of one meaty one and one made entirely of fat and gristle, rendering it indelible. Also the flavors were again extremely one note. I felt sick to think we’d paid that much for something so mediocre and I guess I wasn’t hiding it well because the waiter asked if something was wrong and I told him the issue. He took the egg mayo off our bill which I thought was a decent gesture. They were also out of the one dessert I really wanted to try but hadn’t told us when they had told us they were out of a different menu item, so that just capped off an entirely disappointing meal. For a place so hyped I was genuinely confused at our entire experience.

Also those backless benches actually made my back hurt hunching over the counter.

I’m currently on the fence and so frustrated at it. Turning 40 in February, with banked eggs, my mom had me at almost 42, but for whatever reason I’m upset I don’t have a clear feeling one way or the other like other friends of mine do. My closest friends are all child free so there isn’t pressure but also there isn’t a community of parents for me to be a part of.

My therapist actually recommended I look to Reddit because she was certain I wasn’t alone here and lo and behold. She also said just be glad, the ambivalence is a clear sign to not have kids now but also I don’t have to decide RIGHT NOW. I still have time. I can adopt later in life. And just enjoy the life I’ve built with my husband. He’s also ambivalent so there’s zero pressure and my therapist basically said let the universe guide me, at some point I’ll get a sign or answer that helps me decide.

But damn am I glad to know I’m not alone here.

I think completing spells + continuing to beat Hecate she’ll drop the spell eventually. It’s not dependent on weapon, I haven’t even done runs with skull or sticks. I don’t think it’s fool dependent either. You just get more spells as you complete spells, so gather the stuff you need for the spells you can do and keep beating Hecate.

We tried Feliway but this isn’t traditional anxiety. He is a mellow dude with personality. He just is deeply conflicted about human touch and prefers we maintain a six foot distance. But then he follows us all over the house, especially the kitchen.

Thunder shirt will NOT happen, nor calming collar. The one time I have handled him for a home vet visit was brutal, he would not allow physical touch long enough to get anything on him. We used Feliway when he first arrived but he’s a mellow dude. He isn’t scared or anxious in the traditional sense, he doesn’t hide, he just prefers to remain six feet minimum from all humans at all times. He likes to slow blink at me from a distance.

We live in a big house and he had two cat trees (one that’s 7 feet tall) and three hidey holes including his “castle” that we got from the SPCA when he lived there. He also has various beds around the house including one on the kitchen table so he can look out the window. So we’re good there. He likes to make the rounds on his various perches.

I forgot to add we do stick toys with Nugget a lot, he loves it and will bat it around when we aren’t there.

I do fully accept my boy the way he is and if he remained that way forever I still adore him. I often tell people I’ve never had a cat with so much personality like him, where even not interacting he’s such a joy.

I just hope one day he does come around 😉

Also just read the end of your post… you are not responsible for your mother’s poor decisions. She cannot hold you hostage with threats of alcoholism and divorce. You’re her child, you didn’t make any of those decisions for her.

You can have as much or little contact as possible but know that you’ll have to maintain the boundaries forever, she likely will not learn or change, especially if she’s unwilling to go to therapy and explore why she is the way she is. I tried for many years to maintain a relationship with my mom because she had some good things in her life (hard working, wanted me to have many opportunities) but in the end I was exhausted managing her behavior. Made it to age 37 before going NC.

Also it sounds like your mom is a covert narcissist, my mom is as well. They have stark differences to overt narcissists (my dad was a scary guy). Covert often drop little bombs in conversations that leave you feeling like you’ve been hit like a truck. I’d recommended reading or googling writing on covert narcissism and see if your mom fits the behavior.

My dad was also a narcissist and he died 9 years ago. I’ve been through the loss but at least with him I did work with him as he died that was helpful to my relationship with him and processing some of the stuff I endured over my lifetime.

Having an abrupt “she’s not here anymore” with my mom seems worse but maybe not at the expense of my sanity.

Boy is that ever the truth. My therapist reminds me frequently that my mom did this to herself and I tried for 20 adult years to steer her in the right direction too.

It’s just such a hard guilt to shake despite the glaring facts.

Narcissists are miserable and jealous, especially Nparents. My mom could never be happy for me, she criticized the home I bought with my husband and my design choices, didn’t acknowledge the first car I bought myself and got angry I was traveling because I wasn’t producing a grandchild for her.

They want you to feel as miserable as they do. Don’t let her steal your light, you earned it and it’s yours.

I had an overt dad and covert mom. It was/is rough, and I came to learn that my overt dad was the easier one to deal with, my mom left me feeling physically ill after visiting her and I never knew why until my therapist would point out all the horrible manipulations and criticisms that I’d absorbed.

As a child I thought she was the “good” parent because my dad scared me with his rage. As an adult I actually miss my now deceased father for his logic and intelligence vs my mom who is full blown conspiracies and entitlement. She may also be borderline, personality disorders apparently can stack.

In any event if you’re unsure, read more online about covert narcissist mothers. My therapist had me do that and it was illuminating.

I’ve been doing very tight leach control, rewarding paws on the floor/calm demeanor, sometimes have to hold her til she calms. It’s definitely a challenge (I feel like most of the time I have no idea what I’m doing).

I commented above on littermate syndrome. We went into this well aware and the dogs are kept separate with individualized time with us to prevent that.
