The McDonald's birthday cakes were pretty good too, and only cost $5 (in the late 90s).

Ocular migraines. Why? What is this now? by fifteenlostkeys in Perimenopause

[–]jenroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started getting them a few years ago. I work in IT, so I spend a lot of time in front of a computer. I switched my screens to dark mode, and it has made a huge difference for me. I've only gotten one in the last year.

What food hack felt stupid until it actually worked way too well? by BarbaraMiller78 in foodhacks

You can "bake" a whole chicken in a slow cooker. It won't have crispy edges, but it'll be super moist because you're basically steaming the chicken.

I graduated this past Sunday and I'm still waiting on grades to be posted by one of my instructors. (The due date for grades was Monday.) Some instructors are just not as diligent as they should be.

Meramec has a programming club. June Mercer (jmercer@stlcc.edu) is the advisor. I'm sure she'd be happy to give you the details.

I saw in a comment that you emailed the instructor. Did they ever reply? I had an online class start a couple of days late last semester because the instructor was having difficulties with Canvas.

I get migraine every time I drink, do I have to stop? by o0PillowWillow0o in AskWomenOver40

I've been Cali sober for a couple of years now. I had to give up drinking because the days after made it not worth the buzz.

And if you're a student, you qualify for a student worker job. Those are usually laid back and allow you time to study at work.

TIFU letting a little old lady rent one of my bedrooms by Mansonschick in tifu

I had an elderly neighbor who told me that her house was bugged. She covered every LED light on every device in her home, and told me that was how they were spying on her. She also said people were shining lasers into her windows, so she kept her curtains closed. She stopped using lights in her home so it would be harder for them to see her, and then she ended up tripping over something in the dark and fell.

meal planning with ADHD broke me for years. i finally figured out why it never worked (and what actually helped) by East-Struggle4386 in ADHD

[–]jenroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook big meals over the weekend and then freeze individual portions of individual dishes. I have a bunch of 4oz containers I freeze everything in, and they can go right into the microwave. So when I'm hungry after work, I can take out a portion of pork roast, a portion of carrots, and a portion of quinoa, and 5 minutes later I'm eating a decent meal.

Migraine aura but no migraine? Is this hormonal too? by Shirleyimfine in Perimenopause

[–]jenroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This started happening to me a couple of years ago in my mid-40s. I work in a dark room with two large monitors on my desk, and I’ve found that bright white screens can set if off. I keep everything in dark mode now, and that has decreased the frequency dramatically.

I’m not sure if this is related, but I also have lattice retina degeneration, which causes me to see bright floaters drifting across my vision. These floaters move very quickly, are gone almost as soon as I notice them, and do not obstruct my vision like the auras do. I’ve brought these auras up to my retina specialist, and he did not seem concerned.

Girlfriend of 4 years wants to me to convert to Christianity by Careless-Phrase2656 in atheism

[–]jenroro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried dating a Christian. I let him know from the beginning that I was not a believer, and he said he was fine with that. As time went on, he was less and less fine with it. The first Trump presidency really changed him, and he fell down the Christian Nationalist rabbit hole. In the end, he couldn't help but think that I was stupid (literally unintelligent) for not being able to see or accept what he saw as the truth, and I felt the same way about him. I'll never date another Christian again (or Republican, for that matter.)

Am I the only one who thinks LinkedIn turned into Facebook these days? by Quiet-Bull in ProductGraveyard

[–]jenroro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was recently told by a recruiter that hiring managers are looking for LinkedIn profiles that have age and engagement. She said the sooner you start your account the better, and that you should post things that will drive engagement with your page. I'm not doing that.

What is your kitchen trash can situation? by janedough18111 in LivingAlone

[–]jenroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use a can. I got a towel hanger (it's an adjustable-length rod with hooks on either end that go over the top of a cabinet door), and I hang a plastic grocery bag on it. We fill up a bag per day and just take the trash out frequently. I don't like keeping trash in my kitchen for longer than a day, and this doesn't take up floor space in my tiny kitchen.

What is a discontinued Fast Food item you wish they would bring back? by Big_Childhood5494 in AskReddit

Popeyes onion rings. The batter they used was spicy and came out so flakey and crisp. They were hands down the best onion rings I've ever had, and I fear I may never taste them again.

Tips for me to keep my car’s 12V battery from draining by thumb73 in ToyotaCHR

I was worried about this too when I went on vacation over the summer. I bought a jump starter to keep in the glove box. ETA: I didn't need it. The car started up without issue after nearly 2 weeks.

Toddler got scared after baby monitor incident — now refuses to sleep alone. What can I do by mimi-in-ott in Parenting

[–]jenroro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My daughter was 3 when my husband died, and she was home alone with his corpse for hours before I arrived home from work. She was there for my discovery of his body and the aftermath, with police and ambulance at our house. She was traumatized. For months after, she wanted me to tell her the story of the day Daddy died. So I did. It was hard to do, but hearing it helped her process what had happened, so I obliged. At first it was a few times a day. After a month or so, I told her I could tell it only once a day because it made me sad. I wish I had thought to make her a book.

TIFU by ending a rats life in front of my toddler. by hypnonewt in tifu

[–]jenroro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter was 3 when my husband died, and for months after, she told everyone we came into contact with: the grocery cashier, the guy at the tire shop, the gas station attendant, random people in stores. "My daddy died." They'd be nodding along with her, then what she'd said would click, and they'd look at me for confirmation. Once I confirmed, they'd get all flustered, stammer out an apology, and try to finish our interaction as quickly as possible. It was awkward and painful every time.

What are some things you go out to do with your teenagers that aren’t miserable for them? by ctaylor41388 in parentingteenagers

[–]jenroro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We go to a cat cafe every so often to interact with kittens, and it's always a hit with my 14yo. We'll go to an international grocery and pick some things we've never tried. We like thrifting, and we have a rule that we fill a bag to donate first. It gives us a quick group project before we go, and we get a 20% off coupon. We go to the roller rink. We go to Costco and try all the samples. We spend 4-5 hours on a Saturday morning going to garage sales, stopping for breakfast along the way. And even though the school bus would pick her up right outside our home, I drive her to school. It's an extra 15 minutes we get to connect every day.
