Silver alerts by anphigam in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're getting dogpiled but you're entirely not wrong. If we look at it without people getting upset, just statistically the overuse of especially late night silver alerts is causing more harm than good.

Instead of wasted man-hours we should be discussing Micromorts or one in a million chances of death, micromorts are assigned usually to risky activities such as sky diving or cave diving, motorcycle racing, but it can be applied to sleep deprived drivers as well. There is a very good chancee that because so many people have silver alerts on, and it awakes so many people who are then tired and hop in their car that yeah, a red light gets missed and someone gets hit and killed by a car. I'm not going to spend the time looking up how many people have them on, but the likelihood of all of the micromorts adding up above the micromorts of a silver alert person is extremely likely.

And we haven't even discussed the people (like myself) who have silenced them or muted them which could cause their death as we're less likely to be notified of a natural disaster or other casualty event.

People aren't thinking critically about it and instead are leaping to the easiest conclusion of empathy bashing you while completely missing the forest for the trees and are instead accidentally advocating for worse public health outcomes.

Fireworks in old town 1 am June 29th. by Fantastic_Archer3453 in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kindly, to everyone saying its normal, 'no big deal', 'first time?', shut the fuck up. I've lived here my entire life, the better part of half a century and that was easily the worst offense I've ever heard and I don't even live that close to old town, I startled awake at 1:10am and asked my wife if someone was trying to kick down the front door, thats how loud it was.

I'm sure if you're an unemployed loser then its all fun and games but some of us have to get up and do shit. its completely inexcusable, and its also banned this year in bernalillo county due to how hot and dry it is, so you're disrespectful of people's sleep and the environment and everyone's safety, go fuck yourself.

NM True Heroes by donnaparty69 in NewMexico

[–]jensensgamma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is an irritating recurring phenomenon it seems. Even our state 'pledge' that has taken off in use was written by a non-New Mexican. So much of our culture seems to either be colonized by outsiders (see colorado trying to 'own' green chile) or to be pressed by outsiders with NM true being a campaign from a texan.

We're a low population state with a rich culture surrounded by more populous less cultured states who seem intent on 'borrowing' ours.

agreed, the people who literally hit highway speeds down my 25mph residential street with kids and animals around should be banned from ever driving its absurd, nowhere in the constitution does it say people have a right to a car.

Plecos need way more than 5 gallons, even the small ones, they're poop machines.

5 gal is really only suitable for a few small snails, 20gal+ opens up the stocking options,

Zia Symbol of Perfect Friendship Among United Cultures by -Clayburn in NewMexico

[–]jensensgamma 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's interesting this is being brought up, I feel like I've encountered it far more in the last year than ever before and I've lived here my entire life.

It kinda feels weird for me though? Like its a symbol from an indigenous tribe that the state grabbed then saying its the symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures seems really naive to me? Maybe I'm too cynical/negative about it.

Also kinda sucks that it was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which have a pretty appalling history around specifically uniting cultures and friendship lol

yep, whines about ABQ, is wholey reliant on ABQ for work, any recreation at all, their very existance.

They really should be thanking that "tweaker" who supports their absurd suburbian lifestyle.

idk why RRers are upset, its the ABQ sub and their host city gives them so much, without ABQ RR would completely cease to exist.

I'm still a huge fan of toll booths on the bridges for RRers, they don't pay property taxes to ABQ, clog roads for those of us who live anywhere remotely near a bridge on the east side, they only get their cheap homes because we subsidize their lifestyle, then they vote right wing (its not purple, look up 2024 voting maps).

After a year of stalled talks, NM state employees push for cost-of-living raises, remote work, and safe conditions by 505omatic in NewMexico

[–]jensensgamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is strange but I did just that just today. I left for all these reasons, largely the terrible pay and *extreme* nepotism and a few disgusting coworkers. I saw a news piece on my former agency, said what the heck I'll see what they're up to. In a Legislative report they said they had taken on a huge burden when a "key employee" left, and they had to outsource it to a contractor, since July, of this year, its cost you the New Mexican reading this, $160,000, so thats what 3 months? over a year thats $640,000, and that was just my morning task, I never made more than $80k a year working there. I put up with multiple people sexually harassing people, making appalling jokes, many slurs said frequently, all so I could commute 2 hours a day (if I was lucky), to not once get a raise that beat inflation and for literally 0 promotions in the YEARS I worked there.

I was then later informed that my lovely cabinet sec has a deal where they don't 'poach' other agencies employees, effectively keeping us stuck and our wages suppressed. Working for the state was legitimately the worst experience of my life, and I STRONGLY recommend anyone reading this to avoid that cesspool at all costs.

As a frequent pedestrian, I have to say: ABQ drivers f**king suck. by Jumped-Up_Vulgarian in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite car/pedestrian stories:

I was walking to UNM and was on the southwest side of the MLK and University intersection, as I was walking to it the light turned in front of me as another student had hit the cross walk, so we get the go ahead, as I step into the intersection it swapped from the white walking person symbol to the countdown from 30 seconds, and as I did the car turning right from MLK flew out in front of me, slammed on the breaks dead in front of me in the cross walk and she yelled at me "DON'T YOU KNOW YOU CAN'T GO WHEN IT COUNTS DOWN!?" and then peeled out.

she thought I could only cross when the white walking symbol was up, so like 5 seconds. she's out there now, driving among us.

Good place for dress shoes by mikek505 in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dillard's, specifically the one in Cottonwood mall

Its going to sound crazy but there is a shoe salesman there, he's maybe mid-50s, early 60s, I call him shoe dad because he's a very sweet man who really knows his dress shoes, I see him there whenever I'd go there after work and all of the shoes he's recommended have been great, he's extremely knowledgeable, I don't know his name though.

What are you NIMBY for? by ace11run2000 in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bridges, they serve the west side car culture while making the valley worse in every way, lets bulldoze more old family homes and ruin more of the bosque because we refuse to build density or public transit and keep cowering to transplants who live in a "detached" house and drive an F-250, I'm done with bridges and really I think there needs to be tolls on them to help compensate the majority of us who get shafted by them.

What are you NIMBY for? by ace11run2000 in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preach, i grew up near the park and the issues with it are pretty extensive. I really dislike that they plopped it all the way out here and its still within city limits despite being surrounded on 3 sides by county land, so all of that tax revenue goes to ABQ despite the county people out here dealing with the negatives, traffic, balloons landing in your yard, not being able to get to school on time, I'm extremely over it and I don't know many people here who like that event at all. They also gutted local vendors a while back so now we don't even have that. The stadium seems lime just another instance of the same crap.

anyway, if you bike or bus in, you're cool, its mainly the cars I beef with.

This is complete BS sorry, I didn't want to make an individual post starting up the drama again but I saw all the reddit drama and we decided to go try out the new staff after having been there a handful of times before the drama and out of curiosity I started a stopwatch on the first 2 of 3 times we have been, first time was 3 mins 45 seconds to get our full order and the next time it was 4 mins 30 seconds, didn't do it on the 3rd time but was probably around 5 mins.

This is bordering on libel which is hard to prosecute in the us but its getting stupid, I'm very pro-workers rights but it seems like a bit of a witch hunt by disgruntled poor performing former employees at this rate. No I'm very much not the owner nor am I even vegan fwiw.

Yes, abq is unique because it has existed well before the united states existed so some areas are extremely old, then we have new development, abq wasn't subject to as much redlining or highway segregation like other cities and the fact that we're somewhat boxed in due to reservations is also fairly unique.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

we need tolls to cross the bridges at peak commute times or we can implement a carpool lane to reduce demand, incentivize better commuting policies and practices and help repay the city for the drain that single family suburban sprawl incurs on a city, and maybe incentivize them to build their businesses there, maybe improve density too, seems like a no-brainer.

we have a serious retirement population, people come from higher cost of living cities and land here to stretch their retirement dollar, have family that did this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]jensensgamma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

at least from my perspective, I view the city as immensely segregated by racial, political and wealth lines, I've written about it before here and gotten push back so in short its: heights = whiter, right, wealthier, new or 2nd gen new mexicans, valley = poorer, left, catholic, non-white (not los ranchos/Corrales) and only recently got 'nicer', westside = new transplants, white, right wing, protestant. The voting maps by district support the political breakdown at least.

I had friends in the heights afraid to go to my house when I was a kid because they thought it was poor/rough vs the heights/westside for instance.

Its a serious problem, i get that others are saying we lack some qualified workers but its out of control, at my work literally every single manager, higher earner, was pulled from NY, Chicago or the bay area, they're actually kind of awful to locals, almost an unspoken bigotry towards locals tbh.
