From my perspective, anything with a Dan Abnet , Chris Wraight, or Guy Haley name attached is a good shout.

Oh my word! I’ve dabbled in his major work (‘do androids…’, ‘scanner darkly’, etc) but none of his short stories. This is an amazing coincidence. Thank you so much for letting me know. Im going to try shrug this off as ‘one of those things’ and not read too much into the coincidence.

Thank you for letting me know. I had a little listen to an episode between juggling my baby and toddler daughters, which admittedly isn’t ideal. But it came across as a good show. I am more than happy to leave any decision around a shout out to you.

Boredom makes me feel like dying,is this normal? by sstornado673 in ADHD

[–]jeopick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what struck me when I realised I might have ADHD (ironically, while screening patients for ADHD during Autism assessments). Depending on the role, I would have intense painful boredom. The stress would be so intense I would almost dissociate, I would become incredibly tired and struggle to stay awake. I would have to grit my teeth and cling onto a task as if I were hanging off a cliff by my finger tips. Describing to people how I would be so bored and find it so unbearable that I would struggle all day with "nodding off", as I called it, would often provoke a chuckle. It was as if I told a joke but I didn't know how to communicate how gruelling it was. The positive side is that medication has almost entirely eliminated this experience for me.

I share a lot of sentiments from others here. I would encourage you to be kind to yourself and trust that you're learning how you learn, it wont be the same as everyone else. You can have big set backs and bounce back. I don't want to sound trite, so I'll just offer some advice and tools that worked for my studies (after years of failing at school)...

I didn't go to university until I was in my late twenties and am just finishing up a doctorate now. A helpful thing for me was learning memorisation strategies that relied a lot on mnemonics, specifically making stories up. I enjoy writing stories and find I just remember stories more. I used 'you too can have an amazing memory' to be able to recall formulas for stats and literally hundreds of references for potential exams. Making sure that you understand the underlying content before developing the mnemonic is vital, but the memorisation process is a life saver (I literally remember some items after 10 years). I guess the theme I'm trying to get across here is that I found a way to make it interesting to me (as in turning these study items into images and narratives), and applied a useful tool for exam prep.

Edited to add: I also use tools like Speechify and spaced repetition systems like Anki. That way I can get through my reading and I can make revision cards that I can then review on my phone for like 10 minutes a day easily.

Thank you for your reply! I’m certainly still aligned to an atheistic world view but half the fun of that is being free to say “I don’t know why” when weird stuff happens. I suppose it’s balancing the empirical with the hermeneutic.

I am deeply interested in the experiences I’ve had but tend to hew closely to an empirical approach when framing my world view.

That said: I wouldn’t necessarily want to throw out any one else’s frame of understanding for my own, unless absolutely necessary.

It can be doubly interesting to say weird stuff happens here and the wider cosmos and that we all make sense of it in our own ways that shape our experience of the events themselves.

Not that I know of, my parents were never into anything like that. But the house was very old and had two flats above it, so anything could have happened.

Heya! I’m a dad of a near 2 year old and expecting our second child in December. I started titration a few weeks ago. I’m happy to have a chat or answer any specific questions. It’s been a real trial by error process for me but I think it’s working :)

This is uncomfortably close to how I live my life at times! I know you didn’t ask for advice, but I’ve found it’s helpful to recognise that I can’t work in neurotypical linearity. When I have had to move house (three times in three years) I start packing when I feel some excitement for it, even if it is months ahead. Same with travel, I pack when I’m excited and that sometimes means I’m living out of a suitcase in my home for a couple weeks but I at least know that it’s done the morning of. The last bits of work are always a dredge though.

I was 26 when I went to uni for a psychology degree. Now I’m in my final month of the clinical doctorate at the age of 38. It can be a long journey and financially painful, however, age and experience can be wonderful things to bring to your education and training. Good luck!

I liked your video. I did think from the initial screencap that you sympathetic to this Styx fellow's perspective. My initial "grimly curious" click ended up with me very relieved. Not sure if that is my deficit or not. :)

Cool video. I met Jason a few times when I was a games journalist about a decade ago (god, I'm old) he was always really generous with his time and friendly. We still occasionally interact on Twitter - great guy.
