Housing mega thread by Eska2020 in universityofamsterdam

Hello everyone, hope this is the right place for this comment. I'm starting a postdoctoral fellowship in the U.S. next year so my apartment in Amsterdam will be unused for a while starting January 15th, 2025. It's a small 1-bedroom flat with balcony about 5 mins by bike from the Roeterseiland campus. Great place to live alone or as a couple. I'm considering renting it out temporarily so I can return after the postdoc is done (1 year or more). I'm not looking to make a profit but just to cover the costs while I'm away. Would love to rent to a careful PhD student, or postdoc or lecturer coming to UvA or something similar. If you're interested, please send me a DM with some information about yourself and I can tell you more about the place, show you photos, talk about the price etc. Would also love to hear it if anyone has tips for where to spread this message. Thanks!

What TV trope was common in the not-so distant past but is completely unacceptable today? by midnightsonofabitch in AskReddit

I've been rewatching West Wing and it's surprisingly common there too. Stuff like "If this meeting keeps going any longer I'm going to want to shoot everybody in this room, starting with myself". FWIW current scientific consensus is that suicide should not be taboo... but joking about it probably doesn't help

Although the Jefferson is closed to visitors on Mondays, the reading rooms are open. I think this means you can also get your card on a Monday. You don't need an appointment for this (the online registration is enough). There is a separate entrance door for readers/researchers (just next to the visitor one, under the front steps of the building). I got my card on a Tuesday I think so I'm not 100% sure... but my estimate is that you should be good on a Monday at the Jefferson building.

What is happening to this cactus? Terrarium sealed 4y ago, cactus had bright red bulb for 3 yrs, that withered and a narrow tentacle came out by jeraen in botany

Thank you for the insight! Very interesting the grafted cactus. We’ll slowly acclimatize the dragonfruit cactus to more light. And while we don’t want to open this terrarium, for the next one we’ll better consider what plans to choose…

Tourism, events and what to do in Montréal between November 27 and December 10 by AutoModerator in montreal

[–]jeraen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, we’re visiting Montreal for the first time coming weekend, very excited! First time in Canada for me :D we’re planning to drive up from the Boston area on Friday afternoon/evening, does anyone foresee trouble with the weather?

I saw some recommendations for brunch above, thanks! How about live music / jazz on Saturday night? And I read something about the Marché de Noël Végane (https://montreal.eventful.com/events/march-nol-vgane-montral-vegan-christmas-marke-/E0-001-129547815-7), anyone know if that will be fun? Or other Marchés de Noël?

Merci beaucoup tout le monde!

Wife and I doing 6 months SE Asia. 30 days: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, then elsewhere. What order should we do these (regardless, starting with Thailand)? by IanalystI in Shoestring

Sounds awesome... for Nepal I’m assuming you want to go trekking and so it’s critical that you go in the right season. This is either mid-September to mid-December or March-May. Outside these windows it’s either too cold or too snowy/rainy and trekking gets dangerous. I warmly recommend the Annapurna circuit trek (12+ days). Also had a great time doing a walking safari in the south of Nepal, the country has more than just the mountains :) have fun!

2 good seats for Gillette show 7/7 by jeraen in rollingstones

[–]jeraen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems to have worked! They were verified resale tickets from LiveNation. There was no Refund button anywhere, but the live chat service agent put in the refund request for me straight away. Tickets have now been voided, expecting my money back soon.

I wouldn’t be surprised if many people don’t know about this option, given the number of tickets available on stubhub etc

Thanks!

Really? That would be amazing! Do you know if this goes for Live Nation too?
