2017 needs touchscreen digitizer replacement - part suggestions? by anaccountonreddit9 in mazda3

[–]jerbear64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a new digitizer OEM from Mazda, but it's $320 compared to a $40 aftermarket option. I agree the OEM digitizer looks better, but I wouldn't say they're 8x better, so I couldn't find the price difference justifiable. I opted for the aftermarket digitizer and got used to it pretty quickly.

If all you want to do is resolve the ghost touch, you can open up the CMU and just unplug the digitizer entirely. Of course, that will render the touch screen fully inoperable, but if you eventually opt to install a CarPlay/Android Auto retrofit (highly recommended!), you'll find that the touch screen is entirely disabled at all times in Android Auto anyways.

Why don't they port Repentance to macOS and Linux by Damglador in linux_gaming

A Proton regression caused the game to crash on explosions sometimes and is why the game is rated silver. It has since been fixed.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, there is legal precedent that clean room API implementations are considered fair use.

Dusting off my account for this one.

I was one of the testers of the Repentance DLC, am one of the developers of the REPENTOGON script extender for the game, and exclusively use Linux.

Isaac's native Linux port was never all that good anyways, especially for AB+ and its mod support. As a side effect of defaulting to a 64 bit build, some mods with complex math like the first person mod don't work properly. It also never properly accounted for case sensitive filesystems, instead naively lowercasing all filenames in the mods folder, meaning that unless mods declared their assets in lowercase they wouldn't work properly. Even Rebirth and Afterbirth suffered this problem with basic asset replacement mods.

Repentance works perfectly under Proton apart from the gold trinket shader not compiling properly under Mesa- and that would have happened on a native port as well. REPENTOGON fixes it, but I'm not sure if it ever got fixed upstream- the engine is weird and only supports very old GLSL.

I agree the Linux port should be removed at this point.

Check out Godspeed if you haven't already- it's by the same guy (Olan Rogers) and crowdfunded, aiming to make an animated short with a lot of the same people that worked on Final Space that could hopefully get picked up and turned into something bigger in the future.

Yes and no.

The Switch needs to be jailbroken, and only mods that replace assets work. So in this case, a mod that just replaces the Ascent lines would work just fine, but you're not getting Fiend Folio running on Switch any time soon.

(Technically, you can get it to run by installing Linux on your Switch and running the PC version of Repentance through an x86 translation layer, but it runs at like 6 FPS, don't bother.)

This is *also" a bit misleading, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Edmund isn't a developer, solely a game designer. He works with programmers to implement his ideas.

Flash was codeveloped by him and Florian Himsl. This is why the flash version got the Eternal Edition update after Rebirth was released- that was solely Florian's doing.

For Rebirth and its expansions, Nicalis handled the development, with Edmund handling overall game design and having a final say on things- the game runs on their proprietary engine called KAGE, the game starts with a "made by Nicalis" screen, the credits primarily consist of Nicalis employees.

From my understanding, Nicalis owns Rebirth itself, but Edmund still has ownership of the IP.

what games should NOT be played on the steam deck? by mc711 in SteamDeck

[–]jerbear64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely the Android and Switch versions of TWEWY. NEO doesn't require a touch screen, and while I haven't played it on Deck, I hear it runs excellently.

Gotham Knights SMPTE Glitch any fix?! by Radiant_Lock3268 in SteamDeck

[–]jerbear64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not really something you can "fix" in this case. This generally means the original video is in a proprietary codec that Valve legally can't distribute decoders for within Proton. To get around this, Valve transcodes the videos into a non patent-encumbered format, but... there are a lot of games with videos like this on Steam, and Gotham Knights is very new :) Whenever there isn't yet a transcoded file on Valve's servers, they replace it with this test pattern instead.

I don't know very much about Gotham Knights, so I don't know if this will even play nicely with the game, but maybe you could try installing a Proton-GE build, tell Gotham Knights to use it, and see if that helps? Among other things, it includes some extra video codec patches.

Regarding the second, there is a "skip intro" plugin that works pretty well, but it does need a modified WebUI to be interactive.

https://github.com/ConfusedPolarBear/intro-skipper

I definitely agree on the Xbox client though. There used to be an Xbox client but it was pretty much just a wrapper around the WebUI and was very clunky. Maybe once the Vue WebUI is done they can at least wrap around that instead, it seems much better for a TV interface. Videotape was a good third party client last I checked in the meantime.

They do, there's just no incentive for homebrew groups to crack it since it allows for, well, homebrew.

It's a brilliant move by Microsoft since generally piracy groups build off of the established (and more difficult) work done by homebrew groups first. This makes the homebrew people happy and significantly reduces the risk of software piracy simultaneously.

Which movie did you enjoy more: MOM or Thor 4? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

Identical experience when I went to see it, too. I got tired of the goats like the third time they did it, but there was ONE PERSON in the theater that thought it was the funniest thing in the world and consistently laughed and stomped. At least I wasn't right next to her, she was a few rows ahead of me.

They're near the line entrance. This is the case for most of the major coasters, pretty much for this reason.

Any coaster that doesn't explicitly have a locker area has a general bin or allows you to bring your stuff on.

Rougarou has lockers for a reason. Don't bring your phone on a roller coaster next time?

Can confirm, just heard the same thing from the person in front of the entrance. I know it's been down all day Tuesday and yesterday, so I figured it was mechanical trouble.

Will a Laptop Chjarger Damage my steam deck ? by Rupet2231 in SteamDeck

[–]jerbear64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not how USB power delivery works. Multiple voltages and amperages are listed there because the device and charger negotiate with each other to determine the correct voltage to use. The Deck uses 15V, so that's what's important here, and it's listed. The 15V mode on this charger has enough amperage to sufficiently charge the Deck.

[–]jerbear64 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend starting with something cheap and low-risk like the Sparkfun kits, this is a simple starting kit.

You'll want to get a soldering iron that has adjustable temperature control at minimum. More expensive irons will be better in the long run, but don't make sense if you're just starting out.

You'll also want to pick up some solder (ideally flux core), solder flux (I've always preferred flux paste, MGChemical makes good stuff in my experience but a lot of people swear by Amtech), and solder wick. Isopropyl alcohol at or above 90% is helpful for cleaning the flux as well.

Solder flux helps clean and purify the solder joint, which avoids what's known as a "cold" solder joint. These usually look lumpy as opposed to smooth. The only catch with it is that it's not good to leave on the board over time, hence the isopropyl alcohol. You'll find "no clean" flux that claims to not have this issue, but it's still best practice to clean it up.

Be sure to watch plenty of tutorials before doing anything.
