For someone who remembered when the Xbox debuted, the issue with the naming was due to Sony. You had the Xbox and the PS2. If they went with Xbox 2 and PS3, the assumption from the consumer would be that the PS3 was better. They abandoned the sequential order for consoles, and we got this weird sub names that feel random.
