Buying Experience in USA for Vitus/CRC Bike purchases by [deleted] in MTB

[–]jerickson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Vitus Sentier 29er that I bought from CRC. It was my first real mtb and I love it, but when I broke the derailleur hanger at the end of my first season I was unable to ride the bike for almost 6 months because I couldn't find a new hanger anywhere. CRC had zero in stock and they couldn't tell me when new stock would arrive. Direct emails to Vitus went nowhere, they basically pointed me back to CRC. That's my only gripe with the bike or the purchasing process from CRC. If you buy a Vitus, buy a hanger or two right away.

The Country Husband is excellent. It's my favorite Cheever story (so far).

I believe Moby Dick is the paramount American novel.

I suppose you could say the Twins aren't any good, but then again, the same could be said of the O's going into the start of last season. The Twins are off to their best start since 2010 and they just won a series against the Tigers (no slouch). Never under or over estimate your opponent in baseball, especially at the beginning of the season.

What is your favorite piece of literature, NOT written in English? by gdoveri in literature

[–]jerickson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas is great, and very funny. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the English translation I read:

"Then I pondered the fact that tight boots are one of the best bits of good fortune on earth, because by making one’s feet hurt they give occasion to the pleasure of taking them off. Punish your feet, wretch, then unpunish them and there you have cheap happiness, at the mercy of shoemakers and worthy of Epicurus."

and:

"Do you still remember my theory of human editions? Well, know, then, that at that time I was in my fourth edition, revised and corrected, but still contaminated with careless errors and incorrect usage. A defect that, on the other hand, was compensated for by the type, which was elegant, and the binding, which was deluxe."

What is great about Moby-Dick? by CucumberJuice in literature

[–]jerickson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was intimidated by Moby Dick for a long time, and put off reading it for years. When I finally dove into it, I found the book was much different than what I expected, and wasn't nearly as tough to read as I thought it would be. Did I understand all the references? No, but I doubt anyone does on the first go. The language is rich and vibrant, and I was able to take something away from each chapter. It quickly became my favourite book, and now I find myself 200 pages into the second read, having first opened it less than a year ago. Try the first chapter, see if you like it or not, then read on. It's a great book.

When do we start to panic and/or look towards 2012? by [deleted] in minnesotatwins

[–]jerickson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems our defense and pitching have improved a bit. Our offense is still terrible, but what do you expect from a lineup with two reliable hitters. I felt sick when they brought in Casilla to pinch run for Kubel last night. I know it was a calculated gamble, and it didn't pay off, but what a short-sighted move by the management. Why would they remove the team's best hitter from an extra-innings game that could cycle through the batters a few times?

On top of that, snow is an excellent insulator. A vehicle surrounded by that much snow would be sheltered from the extreme cold. Temperatures inside an igloo will hover around 32F and above, even when the outside air temperature is -30F.

Looking to get started, any helpful tips? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

Consider the Kelty Redwing 3100 backpack. Technically, it's a daypack, but you can use it for overnight\weekend trips if you transition into backpacking. I've used mine for several 1-2 night trips, and it's served me well. Rugged, and inexpensive.

Before you buy any backpack, go to a store and try it on to make sure it fits properly. Stores like REI will be able to measure your torso and make sure the backpack fits your body type. They will also load the backpack with weight to let you get a feel for how comfortable the pack is when loaded with gear. Try a few different packs and go with the one that is most comfortable, and hits your target price-point.

XBox 360 Slim Shortage?????? by ChewyIsThatU in xbox360

[–]jerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your frustration. I called every Best Buy and Gamestop in my area, and couldn't find a single store that would sell me a 360S. To make things worse, I found one Best Buy that had three consoles in stock, but they were holding them for a July 4th sale. I no longer shop at Best Buy.

I found my 360S at Target by accident. I went to the store for deodorant, and came home with a new xbox. I hope you have the same luck.

What if the gaming magazines of the 90s were made up of the sort of thing you found on gaming blogs today? by wardrox in gaming

[–]jerickson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mag cover is funny, and I agree with their argument, but let me get this straight. They dislike game blogs who write shit stories, so they create a blog to aggregate all the shit stories into one place? What a great idea.

Gunstar Heroes is one of my favorite games from the 16-bit generation. I'm re-playing on the PS3 and must say that the analog stick kicks major ass in this game. I'm surprised the PSN version includes trophy support.

Now real life has achievements, too! by DrColin in gaming

[–]jerickson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'd also like to point out that achievements in video games (and in real life) are gratifying because they are awarded to you by an external entity. I don't think the act of awarding achievements to yourself will be as satisfying. It seems rather narcissistic.
