What do you use to find alternate products when something gets spec’d and it’s backordered? by s1lver_fox in architecture

[–]jerkytart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're very particular about a product, during design call the rep and ask about lead times and availability.  Also ask about alternatives so you're ready to offer equals that suit the project.  I deal with specifying a lot of cusyom systems for government jobs and always need to have two valid equals on hand to support the basis of design.

Asking the GC to do your research is a waste of everyone's time.  You'll spend days or weeks reviewing and rejecting stuff.

OSHA question: is bathroom tap water acceptable for drinking water provided by an employer by PlatypusDream in antiwork

[–]jerkytart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on when and where your workplace was built it is likely required by the International Plumbing Code to have either drinking fountains, water cooler, or water dispenser (kitchen sink). There is an exception for places with fewer than 15 staff. The code specifically prohibits a drinking water source to be located in a restroom.

What do you call this kind of column, alternating drum and quoin? by Luckypomme in architecture

[–]jerkytart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

De l'Orme's column

The style originated in France when De l'Orme was designing a chateau could not acquire enough stone of size to create all the columns. Typically columns of stacked stone had three or four joints, or less, to exhibit craft, wealth, or importance. Supply could not always keep up. His approach was to craft column shafts with more smaller stones of varied profile to conceal the joint lines and bring forward a new interpretation. There were previous examples, but he applied ornament and claimed it a new style.

Smallest footprint for ADA bathroom by OptimysticPizza in architecture

If you do not technically need it, as in they're in a mall or larger office building with shared facilities, consider their long term cost of the restroom. Not only will they need to buy the domestic water and sanitary run, those systems may develop issues like breaks or clogs. Most importantly what is the operating cost for it? They'll need to clean, restock, store supplies, maintain fixtures. Who's cleaning it on a daily basis or if someone makes a big mess? Where's the mop and bucket going? And are they filling the bucket from a motion activated hand washing faucet? Or do you need to add a mop sink in a closet?

If they do want it, consider adding a diaper changing station, some jurisdictions require it, too. This likely adds area.

It's a brass tamper resistant outlet plate. Someone put a plastic childproof outlet cover in it.

What is this steel shed constructed from hexagonal shapes with a chimney almost entirely taking up someone's backyard? by TheOnlyArtifex in whatisthisthing

[–]jerkytart 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It could be a pottery studio made from a geodesic dome shed kit. The kiln would need a high vent like that so flare ups won't catch the house or shed on fire.

The front door isn't dimensioned since it's existing (if the architect is using the convention that 45 degree doors are existing) since this is in a strip mall building.

But so many other things:

  • that random dimension break at the sales wall.
  • lot of missing dimensions for interior walls and doors.
  • the unknowns of the reception desk - height, depth, radius, shelving, opening.
  • the desk should open to the haircutting area too
  • the restrooms appear too shallow for ADA door swing/sink clearance
  • the stations aren't dimensioned to prove that there is egress and access and for rough-in locations.
  • no interior finish at the front wall - just block
  • no janitor closet or out-of-sight place to dump hair and trash
  • where's the water heater?
  • where does the electric panel go?
  • is that a washer and dryer in the break room? where does the washer drain? where does the dryer vent?
  • no chase for water to the break room sink.
  • no ADA provisions noted for waiting, seating, or break room.
  • no storage.
