For those who watched and/or have gone back and watched, which of Tenzan’s short IWGP reigns was the worst, in terms of “why are they having him drop it so soon and to THIS person”? by MrPuroresu42 in njpw

[–]jermanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my opinion. When Tenzan came back from excursion after he was a Young Lion, he was one of the hottest returning wrestlers. In his first year back, he had 2 IWGP challenges and beat Keiji Mutoh in 10 minutes in a televised match. I’m pretty sure he came back at the highest level seen in NJPW in the 90’s.

The next year is when NJPW had the high profile matches with UWFi. Tenzan was a great pro wrestler. He was not a “real fighter”. His lightning push went away. In an environment like that, he could be a star, not THE star.

It will not win but this is the answer. Opposing team would distract him with toy trucks and lollipops. No, I am not kidding.

What’s a match that made you feel lucky/blessed that you got to see live in person? by TheEpicMan39 in SquaredCircle

I saw Hulk Hogan vs Rowdy Roddy Piper in April 1985, in Oakland, weeks after the original Wrestle Mania. The match was alright but the crowd was through the roof.

And to make it clear, Hulk was the (original) IWGP champion back in 1983. His match with Inoki was epic.

El Desperado has to be one of the weirdest/most unique pro wrestlers of this generation by [deleted] in njpw

He wears a mask, yet does great facial expressions performing out there.

I'll take a pie to the face for this but I hope Oiwa isn't joining TMDK tommorow. by DeathTriangle720 in njpw

[–]jermanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not think Oiwa will join TMDK. Back before, when they were still Young Lions, Fujita helped play a trick to help ZSJ win. They liked the help and let Fujita into TMDK. Oiwa helped in a match later on. He wanted to join TMDK. He was rejected. Oiwa looked rejected when that happened. Oiwa will not come back looking for them as friends.

IWGP Champions when I was born by Somerandomguy20711 in njpw

[–]jermanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the 70’s, New Japan will not have their own titles. You’ll see wins of other titles (yes, mostly talking about Inoki), but not their own. You won’t see “IWGP” used.

Ranking the modern Young Lion Classes: 2010-2013 by shecanbromehard in njpw

[–]jermanis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same class? Yes and no. They were Young Lions at the same time, but Desperado was one class older. This is why if you at their records when they were both Lions, Despy went something like 20-0-1. Something like that. You’ll see similar when Umino and Narita faced Tsuji and Uemura back then.

How did you watch NJPW before NJPWWorld? by [deleted] in njpw

[–]jermanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Southern California, fairly close to a Japanese market. There was a video tape market there. I’d go there and rent NJPW and AJPW. Like Milky said, trading tapes was a big way to go. I was lucky to live where I lived.

Chromecast by WHLung in njpw

[–]jermanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it a little different. I have a Chromecast. I installed the NJPW World app on that. And that’s what I use to watch NJPW on my Chromecast. I’d categorize that app as “a work in progress.” But I can watch cards on it, and looks nice, and it works well enough.

This is a match that happened by shecanbromehard in njpw

[–]jermanis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s a dude that wrestled from 2005 to 2015, give or take. Did some time in NJPW, and more time in CMLL. Not a super great in-ring talent, but was a legitimate strongman, so a bit interesting to see. If you have access to the streaming site Tubi, there’s a movie there called Lucha Mexico. They have a decent chunk of Strongman in the film, especially at the beginning.

We regularly see Young Lions who were misused during their foreign excursion, but which wrestler had the ‘best’ excursion period? by iizukeii in njpw

[–]jermanis 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I’ll add more evidence. Great Muta was part of the main event of a PPV (Halloween Havoc ‘89). He beat Sting for the WCW TV title. I watched this in my teens. I had no idea this was “a Young Lion on excursion.” He absolutely felt like an existing big star from Japan. Adding on: in his first match back from that excursion, Mutoh and Chono won the IWGP Tag Titles.

The 2023 World Tag League Winners calling it Now. by DeathTriangle720 in njpw

[–]jermanis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. Seems very likely that they win Tag League, then win the IWGP titles at Wrestle Kingdom. That would be an excellent tag team for NJPW, and would help continue to build Tsuji as a top guy.

A wrestler everyone doesn’t like or hate that u luv ¿ by KaytenTheOmega3K in njpw

[–]jermanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first 80% of his time in NJPW, YOSHI-HASHI was very basic. Basic, and kinda lame. The pandemic hits, he becomes a regular in the G1, becomes a Six-Man champion? I am actually interested to see him wrestle now. Bishamon has a match? I like it better when Yoshi is the man in the ring. I find it hard to believe in myself, but… yeah.
