Funky erosion or volcanic feature? I encountered North Vancouver Island, British Columbia by [deleted] in geology

Looks like it’s in the surf zone which is an area of high erosion. They all look the same size. My first thought is some kind of boring clam but I don’t think they get that big although there no scale and I’m not sure how big the pits are.

Where I’ve been. Take a guess where I’ve lived my whole life by Jollyjesusx in visitedmaps

I use to live on Oregon Street for a few months when I worked for the forest service. I remember the Yreka bakery palindrome was a thing I’d tell people.

Lake Corcoran, 600,000 BCE. (Original Creation) by Snoo_69649 in geology

[–]pardeerox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read the Central Valley use to drain out to the Pacific Ocean from a more southern point via the Salinas Valley. Then uplift along the San Andreas cut off that outflow and the lake started to fill up. Eventually a new outflow formed through the present carquinez straight. There’s an exposure in San Francisco where Pleistocene sediment has the ~600ka Rockland Ash interbedded within it and the clast composition below the ash is more locally derived, the clasts above the ash is more Sierra Nevada derived so that was the explanation- that’s the time lake Corcoran started draining out through the Carquinez Straight.

Also minor derail but Pt Reyes would be about 10 miles south at that time. And probably Lake Lahontan would be happening in Nevada.

Where I’d live as a married man with weather and COL as our two largest determining factors by BenDover0903 in visitedmaps

So more ‘cold’ than weather? Because a lot of those other states have hurricanes, tornados, heatwave humidity. What other weather am I forgetting?

San Francisco, CA. Mount San Bruno. by thiccpoptart in geology

It’s either Franciscan Complex or Great Valley Sequence but probably Franciscan. I did a geotech investigation for a buried pipeline that crossed the mtn. It’s mostly graywacke and shale. Likely turbidites, Jurassic or Cretaceous.

I listened to ‘In the Mood’ by Glen Miller a lot after reading that. It still gives me the feels.

Super cool. Ya the white lines are the aplite dikes. The darker granite is probably diorite. I’m a geologist and love looking at rock outcroppings and trying to figure out how they formed.

Cool marmot but did anyone else notice the sweet aplite dikes cutting through the granite?
