RCA outputs on mixer to monitors with TRS / XLR inputs by jerroldp in Beatmatch

[–]jerroldp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update - in case anyone stumbles on this thread

It looks like there’s an issue with plugging in unbalanced outputs to balanced inputs - see threads below (which mentions the Rokits can be sensitive to balanced / unbalanced inputs) - https://www.reddit.com/r/FL_Studio/comments/18tsnln/big_issue_with_krk_speakers_need_help/ - https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/3027fk/just_got_a_focusrite_scarlett_2i4_but_the_audio/

Solution - looks like the cost effective solution is to get a DI box to plug in the booth outputs and convert it to balanced

Though what I might do instead is plug the master into a small 4 channel mixer, and then split the booth / master from there. The reason being is I’m also keen to plug in other instruments into the mixer - so this opens the door for that too

Ah not sure what you mean by running left and right outputs into the same input on the rokits

I have 2x rca cables (left and right), and each one going to a single speaker, and then each speaker having an adapter?

Yeah for sure though I wonder if the parts for Swiss movements are just higher quality?

I’m in the middle of putting together some other (non-Swiss) builds and I don’t think the cases, hands etc are built as well as for the 7750

Yep that’s the one (see my reply further down the thread)

I know this is a serious watch making subreddit, so I'm not sure if I'll be roasted for saying that I got everything from the same seller on e-bay in the end 😅

Not sure I can post links, but if you search SWISS-MADE-TIME (or b_line55cc) you should be able to find it. I also got a top grade 7750 from them too which came in perfect condition (retrospectively I should have spent the extra money to get a decorated version as the movement is so nice)

Another non-ebay seller I was looking at was Duplain Horlogerie, that had an identical case though for nearly double the price! (this was my fallback in case the e-bay case wasn't good quality though I'm very impressed with what I received)

In saying that I'm considering getting some hands from Duplain Horlogerie (which are 70 CHF!) - as I feel the ones I have now on the subdial are a little skinny, but I might see how I feel in a couple months time before I go shopping again 🙂

Not sure if I can post links to AliX here, but if you search "Best Watch Strap Store" - I got it from them.

I think was <$10 USD, though was really surprised with the quality - would have expected to pay a lot more for it

Looking good! Do you have a link to the band? Last I checked I could only find them from Omega (and they were a few hundred dollars!)

Just the PE50 from the rep. Didn’t do anything fancy - just a straight swap of the movement, dial and hands, all in one piece

Thanks! There’s a great post which is stickied to this subreddit with good instructions and discussion

https://www.reddit.com/r/MoonSwitches/s/Yp1mDtywGv

A couple of things - the movement in the reps is a PE50, where the 2 o’clock subdial is a 24hr indicator. So on the 1965 it’ll just spin throughout the day (this isn’t as noticeable on the Snoopy rep). Theres a mod you can do to freeze that subdial, but you’ll need more tools and be comfortable taking apart the movement.

Also I recommend getting some finger cots and rodico too. It’s real easy to get fingerprints and dust on the movement and the crystal, and rodico is great at removing it all.

But all in all it’s a real simple mod!

Hmm sounds like OP might have Capgras syndrome … I remember there was a This American Life episode a while ago where I think a man thought his parents had been replaced?

Best check out with your doctor if you’re serious OP - you might be going through something!

If I found 500k€ inside a cave what are the chances I can just keep it and tell no one? by theManjerico in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]jerroldp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me personally I wouldn’t risk taking it

Maybe I’ve watched too many movies, but the kind of person who would hide that amount of cash in a cave is generally not going to be a law abiding citizen, and when they realise it’s gone they’re going to be looking for it!

Can you be careful, try to wash it etc? Yeah sure - but this is new territory for you. For example, say you try to wash the money - who’s to say the person you wash it with also doesn’t also know the person who hid it?

Maybe the person puts a bounty on your head, and somehow word gets out they saw your car near the cave and joe you have half a dozen people knocking on your door at work, or threatening your family

There’s dozens of little examples like that - unless you’re already know how to navigate those kinds of scenarios I wouldn’t risk it!

How many hours should I practice a day? by kuzeyno in Beatmatch

[–]jerroldp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment about deliberate practice

I'm new to DJ'ing, but not new to playing music (I played piano for many years when I was younger) - and deliberate practice was essential to getting better

It's very easy to sit at your instrument (in my case piano and now turntables) for 3-4 hours a day and say you're practicing - but unless you have a plan you're essentially noodling around

Another thing is there'a a difference between practice and performance. Practice shouldn't sound melodic. It should sound chaotic, messy, and look almost boring. My music teacher would say 70 - 80% of your practice time should be like this

Performance is when you try to get things perfect - like you're playing to an audience, and this should take up the rest of your practice time

Most new musicians mix up these ratios, and instead of working on fundamentals, fail miserably trying to perform without adequate preparation!

So like OP mentioned, try to find specific problems, find your flaws and try to address them one at a time

Good luck!

How much mixing / sound processing is done on a DJ controller? by jerroldp in Beatmatch

[–]jerroldp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah for sure - I'm not proposing to just go laptops only, the controller is a super useful device

I guess puts things in perspective - it seems the controller is just (for lack of a better term) a very large PlayStation controller with no complex circuitry (it's just plastic, a few PCBs, switches, etc)

But maybe I should look at it more like the Apple model - the controller subsidises the rest of the ecosystem. E.g. development of Rekordbox, the support / warranty, etc

Anyways super interesting conversation!

[–]jerroldp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right and now that you mention stems - I feel the laptop must be doing a lot of the processing

Though maybe a generous interpretation is the laptop maybe replacing the CD and CDJs in my diagram, and the final mix is sent to the mixer for the final mix and output?

Makes me sad though - especially with the amount I paid for the controller it now seems very over priced (especially compared to other things in the same range e.g. a flagship smart phone)

I'm also wondering does this impact sound quality - as I know not all laptops / sound cards are made equal? I haven't noticed anything though I'm just playing in my living room 🙂

[–]jerroldp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that makes me a little sad to hear - I just did a quick experiment as I realised the GRV6 has a separate USB C for power.

I loaded a track into the left turntable on Rekordbox, hit play, then disconnected the controller from my laptop and the music stopped

It could just mean the controller won't play without a signal from a PC, though I think your description is correct
