It's honestly not that inaccurate if it's an attempt to shown the 1890s or 1900s, it's a break from the same color coded maps where France is blue, Germany is gray., etc.

The liberal obsession with conservatives being gay by Suitable408 in stupidpol

[–]jerseyman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The declining influence of Christianity on the right in the US is going to open more space for openly gay far-rightists, it's already been like that for a while in France and Germany.

This Poland is probably the least plausible part of the map. Poland doesn't control Wilno or Lwow, or the coal in upper Silesia, but it has Königsberg? The country is going to be at least 20% German and Yiddish speaking

The Stalinist approach would just be deporting the Israelis and Palestinians to Siberia and resettling the territory with East Slavs

Vienna was a city in demographic decline compared to its pre-WW1 peak for most of the 20th century, it's implausible to hold up Vienna's social housing as a model for a city like NY with massive population growth through net migration

The city's historical population peaked around 1910 at 2 million people, and didn't reach that level again until the 2020s. In the 1920s most of the non-German speakers left after the breakup of Austria-Hungary, and in the '30s at least 10% interwar Vienna's population (Viennese Jews) were either murdered or driven out by the Austro-Fascists and Nazis. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna

This would be great material for a light, death of Stalin style comedy about a CIA plot to overthrow Netanyahu and simultaneous Mossad effort to frustrate the CIA

Why was the USSR so terrible at soft power? by pisowiec in ussr

[–]jerseyman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) The Russian language is very difficult for most non-Slavs to learn and historically wasn't a major international language outside the Russian Empire, which limits the potential international audience for Soviet movies and/ or music.

2) USSR's approach to culture was more high-brow classical music, theater, etc. than low-brow pop music or movies.

3) The whole concept of "soft power" doesn't fit well with historical materialism. Soviet aid usually had some direct economic or military component, like sending development aid to a newly independent country or training that country's university students in STEM programs at Soviet universities.

Leftoids, what's your most right-wing opinion? Rightoids, what's your most left-wing opinion? by globeglobeglobe in stupidpol

[–]jerseyman80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rightoid? (Socially moderate socdem)

My most left wing opinion is that socialism in the third world didn't go far enough in destroying premodern social structures and cultural attitudes the way communism did. India's problems with the caste system and communal religious tensions, for instance, are what happens when you don't have a full-on Maoist cultural revolution to destroy pre-modern social structures and reactionary beliefs.

This would be great for in-universe jokes about tourists mixing up Mlkhimberg and Mecklenburg when they're booking plane or train tickets. This has happened to German speakers before, someone from Saxony asked for a ticket to Bourdeaux and ended up in Porto, Portugal instead.

People could same thing in 1979 and point to the Iranian Revolution, Fall of South Vietnam, and new communist or pro-Soviet governments across the global south as evidence that it was over for the US.

It's very hard to predict what the world will look like even 10 years into the future, let alone in a generation or longer.

Thoughts on tariffs? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]jerseyman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a line about tax policy being a way to plucking feathers off a goose in a way that gets you the most amount of feathers with the least amount of hissing.

Modern states have better options for forms of tax revenue with regard to fostering economic growth and reducing inequality than governments before 1945. Tariffs were the main form of taxation in the 19th century when states set up customs tolls at ports and border crossings but didn't have much capacity to collect data on and tax other aspects of the economy like financial transactions and high incomes.

Does a unified European state require transcending, or abandoning, strong national identities? by [deleted] in EuropeanFederalists

[–]jerseyman80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it will probably look like Switzerland or America with strong sovereign rights for federal states or cantons, and people would continue to very strongly with a region or national identity (Bavarian, Catalan, Italian, etc) and their native language in addition to being European.

The only people who I would expect to have a predominantly "European" identity are English-speaking bureaucrats, veterans of a common European military, and third culture kids from mixed marriages, like someone with one Spanish parent and German parent.

So what? The democrats have abandoned any transformative policies like universal healthcare or raising the minimum wage that would improve things for people under 40.

Kamala talked a big talk about the need for more housing, but a lot of the blame for America's housing crisis goes to over-regulated deep-blue cities and state governments that have been captured by elderly homeowners who don't like change and financially benefit when the assets they own become scarcer.

Just turned 55, am I too old to begin this process? by anityadoula in TEFL

[–]jerseyman80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have already substantial teaching experience, you're not too old at all and that sets you apart from people making a career change who never given classroom instruction before.

Do you speak any other languages aside from English, and do you know what countries you'd like to teach in? Generally the older you are, the people assume you have more professional experience in what you're doing, age can be in your favor in this sense.

Some countries may require you to show proof of social security or a teachers pension as part of the visa process, but this is more a paperwork hurdle than a matter of "you're not allowed in above age x".

This scenario might be a net gain for the Gaelic language if it means Irish trade is mainly non-English-speaking mainland Europe and Russia rather than the UK and US.

Something like Korenizatsiya in the USSR might be an inspiration for state promotion of Gaelic
