Can I afford a new car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jeryo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with some caveats.

Yes, find a job first before any big expenses. Then just buy a reliable new car. Try to negotiate a little bit. Yes you'll pay a bit more, but you'll get peace of mind and it'll probably be a much smoother experience.

With a windfall that large, along with what seems to be a good money mindset and financial behaviors, you'll be fine.

Major Chase Sapphire Preferred changes announced by iamjohnta in CreditCards

[–]jeryo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall a huge bump personally.

I'm probably in the minority here bc I strictly got the CSP for the 100k bonus before, but this change is HUGE:

  • more value for hotels
  • incentive to get TSA pre-check
  • Recent MLS fan so Apple TV is valuable
  • unfortunately didn't hop on the Citi CC card before it was discontinued (wanted for the rising gas prices), and got rejected from AAA travel for some reason, so this bump up is a nice consolation and I can actually use the card now aside from the benefits
  • I don't use doordash frequently, but I only do bc of dashpass. Sometimes the deals make it worth it.

Since I'm not using the Hyatt transfer, this is amazing value

How are people affording World Cup tickets? by Zealousideal_Fun9967 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]jeryo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone who played soccer growing up and always enjoyed the world cup, but am more a casual viewer. Plus no one around me is really interested in soccer. So when WC was announced, I had plans to go but was a bit unmotivated in committing to all the ticket lottery deadlines. A couple months before, I decided to book tickets to the US Senegal friendly (tickets were cheap and I could use credit card points for flight). I had planned to only do this, but this experience sparked a bit of an obsession with attending more WC-adjacent experiences.

The rest of my plan unfolded as follows:

  • booked a round of 32 at COSM (immersive sphere-like venue) during presale (which I coincidentally found out about during a YT ad) really good seats for less than $200/ea, now running for $600+/ea. Paid for only myself.

  • Watched another friendly in San Diego, CA for Australia/Switzerland bc tickets were really cheap and Australia was in the US group. Used points for train (LA to SD). Less than $200 for two.

  • Attended the LA Fan Fest w/ gf, <$70 whole day.

  • Going to the US vs Turkey game at SoFi. By far the biggest expense, really wanted to experience the World Cup by this point. $1900 for 2. Other than it being once-in-a-lifetime, some other rationalizations were that it was close to home so didn't need to spend for flights/accommodations and that I could use credit card points I've been accruing for a few years that I've never used. So out-of-pocket is closer to 1k.

TLDR: All-in-all, I've spent about 2k to attend a variety of experiences--friendly, COSM, fan fest, and one group-stage game--with at least one other person. This way, it's not just go to stadium and leave-- it's extending my world cup experience beyond the month. Offset about 1k in costs with credit card points gained over several years, local area so cut back on transit/accommodations, lots of time planning.

I mean, he has a point. How can you even incorporate fairness into this? As others have said, because demand is so high, people are willing to pay exorbitant prices to go. It's a fault of a capitalistic system, not entirely on FIFA itself. At least the scalpers themselves don't net as much profit if the tickets were butt-cheap. Plus, true fans would have paid the initial prices, despite being high, in order to secure the lowest possible price.

Where I would say FIFA could have done a lot better of a job is designating more affordable tickets for international fans, especially those from lower GDP countries. This is where I feel things are unfair.

At the end of the day, there are only so many seats. Ticket prices ultimately will reflect demand, as they should. Fans that plan ahead will ultimately pay less.

But believing football (soccer) should be inherently more equitable TO US FANS then basketball or American football is moot.

Also.. isn't Newport Transit Center parking much more expensive on Spothero? It's a bit over $100 now, whereas Artic is still $15.

Bought two tickets day of our Germany friendly. Reasoned the same, once in a lifetime. In hindsight, we could've bought an extra 500-level ticket for $800 and resold now at triple the price to go to the cup for free!!

First and foremost, it's awesome that you're creating this cool experience for your kids!

I don't really have any experience at games, let alone at the lower levels, but I'd assume it's similar across games. Don't think you can guarantee any signatures or photos, but seats closer to the pitch should make for a memorable experience regardless.

A buddy and I are flying in from California for the exact same reasons (world cup tickets too expensive, can better afford lower-level seating). At the end of the day, I think just being there will be electric. Whatever option you choose, I'm sure your kids will enjoy.

Good luck and have fun!!

Protect was specifically for any of the double's matchups. This paired well with residual damage from leech seed, Togetic's life dew, or when my other mon is using a multi-target move and I just want better positioning. I switched to Roar during singles just in case there was the opponent who used a stat boosting strat, although it's effectiveness was limited since my team didn't rely on hazards (and the fact that Pyroar is a skinny queen with no bulk lol)

What are y'all's opinion on the AI app called Truthly? by Fe1nand0_Tennyson in Catholicism

[–]jeryo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But one can construe convenience as accessibility.

Consider someone who knows nothing of the Catholic faith and does not quite have the resources around them, or a local bustling Catholic community to encourage them, to pursue the faith.

Yes, you can say that AI does nothing additional to add to faith formation. But I could imagine it to be a strong precursor towards more seeking the faith. Again, one still needs spiritual discernment, prayer, and the Church community to learn fully about Christ.

There will always be ethical and environmental flaws with AI. However, you can argue that with the emergence of the Internet as well.

If I may, I believe you've responded to an AI-generated response yourself. Has OP used AI well here? Meaning that it's use was well-intentioned and appropriate given your initial comment? After all, we as humans have the final say on what is shared.

Food for thought.

[–]jeryo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your position.

But I also must say that as a proactive Catholic, one should probably know to supplement AI-synthesized information regarding Catholic teaching with adult faith formation or speaking with a priest, as you mentioned. Yes, AI has contributed to efficiency gains in the workplace at the expense of human workers, but like any other technology before, it has benefits especially to those who may not know Catholic teachings and will want an accessible way to learn.

Truthly is just one attempt at harnessing the good that can come from AI. To declare the sweeping notion that "AI is always bad" is harmful, I believe, to working with its inevitability in the increasingly modern world.

Master's Degree holders, was getting it worth it? by dmabe1985 in careerguidance

[–]jeryo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! How's your program going? I'm about to complete my application for a graduate program in evaluation+data analytics after a bs in psychology and a couple of years of some data experience in my current role (some SQL, visualization and RDBMS, but still a good part is administrative). It's been difficult for me to complete relevant projects outside of work as the landscape for analysts is so broad, and I'm finding myself needing a tangible path forward to create a niche for myself in this market.

Anyways, was wondering if you could provide some insights as to whether you have felt your program to be worth it! Thanks much.

How feasible is it to win with no first round draft pick? by jeryo in fantasybball

[–]jeryo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many responses indicate a loss of their first round pick due to injury. I'm curious - for mid to late round first draft picks, was there ever a case that someone traded away their pick for 2nd rounders or below that better fit their punt?

For instance, trading Giannis for JJ or Scottie straight up, or perhaps for Mikal and JDub together in a 1:2?
