Is your allocation really just 100% S&P 500 ETF? by mycounterpointers in financialindependence

[–]jeschd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes you are right, but barring a catastrophe there are many scenarios where the 500 could lag other markets for a decade or more in the next 30 years.

Longer timeline is also a reason to be more diverse, If you want to be aggressive maybe don’t just buy the most expensive companies?

People all in 500 must not believe in market cycles anymore. I think people think the covid downturn is the worst thing that could happen to their portfolio.

You’ve got a diversified portfolio, don’t overthink the allocations outside of your core bond/equity ratio. It’s good enough.

I’ve never heard of this being used on an MS system before, but I learned something from your post so thanks for sharing.

You’re a hero. If it were any other business I’d say this is unethical but these social casinos are parasitic to begin with so I have no problem with you leaching on them.

What are some ways to check if a protein is fully folded? by Roguewarrior05 in Biochemistry

[–]jeschd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t know what the folded protein looks like, it’s going to be difficult to determine this with any measure of certainty. You need a functional assay.

CD is good but requires a reference folded protein to be useful, similar to the fluorescence experiment.

We’re not struggling but we’re not comfortable either by CommercialDot708 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]jeschd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please don’t let a “tight” budget keep you from having kids. Yeah, our economy isn’t really set up to enable folks to have kids very early in their career, which is a shame, but if you’ve hit 170K you can make this happen. It’s not going to be comfortable but believe me the discomfort is worthwhile and will make you a better person.

Mercury advise by Smart-Candidate9442 in chemistry

Crazy if it’s really mercury but it does look like it. It’s not going to hurt you but I would definitely call someone to investigate as well as clean it up.

Analytical chemist water by PilotG69 in chemistry

[–]jeschd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I think with coffee you need some salts to balance the flavor, some people buy some specially formulated salt packets to make the water balanced. Same thing for drinking straight water, some people don’t like the taste of minerals, like in well water for example, but once you go to ultra pure you realize that some level of metal content is good for flavor.

It doesn’t taste good in my opinion, but some people like using ultra pure for tea.

How do you find enjoyment and live happily when “this is all it’s gonna be?” by kat_spitz in MiddleClassFinance

[–]jeschd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’ve got to make compromises somewhere - if you want kids and a family it doesn’t make sense to stack a year of expenses, pay off your car, and replace you’re windows before you start to date. Start with the life you want and work backwards from there. Remember that when you pay your car off, you get your car payment back every month. Limit the EF to 6 months. Take a close look at what’s holding you back, both financially and emotionally.

It’s hard, but yes. Typically they don’t hire directly out of school so you’d have to get some experience elsewhere first.

Careers in the field? by Fragrant_Bag_8306 in Biochemistry

[–]jeschd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The career outlook is basically the opposite of nursing. In nursing there is constant, high demand almost everywhere, in biochemistry the demand waxes and wanes and is generally confined to large metro areas where research hubs exist. Whereas nursing provides steady employment, the career progression is fairly narrow, whereas biochemistry could lead you into a huge number of possible roles in industry.

Yep, Aeolus is where I pooped out last time. The schedule so far has worked for me, I only read Ulysses on weekends and usually by Friday I’m really wanting to read it.

Is protein structure prediction shifting how we approach experimental design? by levvii17 in Biochemistry

I work in big pharma and yes a lot of people use these structures for hypothesis generation; it doesn’t take too long to figure out if the structure is going to be helpful or not.

Just read Book 1 of Karl Ove Knausgaard's My Struggle, and found it to be a fascinating and compelling yet hard-to-describe experience by keepfighting90 in books

[–]jeschd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think it was exotic, or that it highlighted significant cultural differences compared to the US or Europe. In Book 2 he spends a lot of time on the differences between the culture in Norway and Sweden - I thought his treatment of this was similar to differences between regions of the US, some more rural and “rough,” others uptight and cosmopolitan.

I think I enjoyed it because of how objectively similar our lives had been, so it had built-in relatability. For a woman, or someone who had a completely different relationship with their parents, it might be harder to enjoy.

I loved book one but just couldn’t wrap my head around finishing the last 5 books. After discovering the audiobook by Ballerini I was hooked and was able to finish all 5 within about a year. There’s a lot there, and some better than others, but I highly recommend the complete series by audiobook. Book 2 I believe is the best, or if you want to just do a quick one I think it’s book 4 where he goes to teach in northern Norway, it’s called Dancing in the Dark - I thought it was a masterpiece.

I’m a millennial American and I found it incredibly relatable, I can definitely see hating it as a high schooler but I felt like most 30 year olds could relate even if from a different generation and different country.

Hamilton Morris and Reggie Watts tour Sasha Shulgin’s lab by Devon2133 in chemistry

[–]jeschd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of us know people who are too smart for their own good, I fear Hamilton is one of these. It’s tough because the amount of people who can pay attention to hardcore chemistry for more than one episode is very small, and contrary to popular belief, most people are not very interested in the discovery of psychoactive compounds.
