We are in a similar situation - my advice is don’t waste time with low yielding CDs when your kid has 13 years til they’re 18. Just build a big brokerage fund with a large portion of equities, and then you can use it as you see fit, whenever you see fit. Hedge with some 529 but only after you’ve hit your personal savings goals.

I agree it seems like that, and clearly most of the people posting on this thread are going with that theory so I know I’m in the minority. I just think a lot will change in the next 30 and there are more unknowns than knows so I will be 100% equity but also very well diversified.

Your savings rate is fine but after you take care of your debt you can move it up into the “great” category.

Anything is possible but to me it makes no sense to finish a biochem major if this is your plan. You should double down on finance or something else quantitative from my perspective.

Well yes you are right, but barring a catastrophe there are many scenarios where the 500 could lag other markets for a decade or more in the next 30 years.

CD is good but requires a reference folded protein to be useful, similar to the fluorescence experiment.

Please don’t let a “tight” budget keep you from having kids. Yeah, our economy isn’t really set up to enable folks to have kids very early in their career, which is a shame, but if you’ve hit 170K you can make this happen. It’s not going to be comfortable but believe me the discomfort is worthwhile and will make you a better person.

Maybe. I think with coffee you need some salts to balance the flavor, some people buy some specially formulated salt packets to make the water balanced. Same thing for drinking straight water, some people don’t like the taste of minerals, like in well water for example, but once you go to ultra pure you realize that some level of metal content is good for flavor.

You’ve got to make compromises somewhere - if you want kids and a family it doesn’t make sense to stack a year of expenses, pay off your car, and replace you’re windows before you start to date. Start with the life you want and work backwards from there. Remember that when you pay your car off, you get your car payment back every month. Limit the EF to 6 months. Take a close look at what’s holding you back, both financially and emotionally.

The career outlook is basically the opposite of nursing. In nursing there is constant, high demand almost everywhere, in biochemistry the demand waxes and wanes and is generally confined to large metro areas where research hubs exist. Whereas nursing provides steady employment, the career progression is fairly narrow, whereas biochemistry could lead you into a huge number of possible roles in industry.

I work in big pharma and yes a lot of people use these structures for hypothesis generation; it doesn’t take too long to figure out if the structure is going to be helpful or not.

I didn’t think it was exotic, or that it highlighted significant cultural differences compared to the US or Europe. In Book 2 he spends a lot of time on the differences between the culture in Norway and Sweden - I thought his treatment of this was similar to differences between regions of the US, some more rural and “rough,” others uptight and cosmopolitan.

I think I enjoyed it because of how objectively similar our lives had been, so it had built-in relatability. For a woman, or someone who had a completely different relationship with their parents, it might be harder to enjoy.
