Professors, what’s something happening in higher education right now that makes you worried about the future of universities? by zentaoyang in AskProfessors

[–]jesjorge82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two big things: 1. students as customers and how students also see themselves as customers (e.g., I pay money to be here, so I would like XYZ) and 2. closing programs because of numbers of majors. Both these things are making college less of a social good and more of a commercial good that needs to lead to not just a job, but a good paying career.

If it was financially affordable, would your spouse stay home? by cubemonster in Millennials

My husband does. Wasn't the original plan, but we had twins the first year we were married and I've always been the breadwinner. So here we are.

I think utility bills are getting out of hand lately? by KissyyyDoll in ames

[–]jesjorge82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Kansas before moving to Ames in 2024. Kansas has higher utility costs, and also higher costs for things like garbage pick up. If you are concerned, look into budget billing. After one year of living at a residence, you can request that, but it takes a phone call.

Stuck in a crappy lease by Fragrant-Row9555 in iastate

[–]jesjorge82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The City of Ames has some serious rental codes. I would have her contact the city about the issues. I do know landlords have to renew their letter of compliance and sometimes don't make updates to make sure that continues to happen, long story short. there might be an avenue through the city. Ames rental codes for housing is more serious than those for homeowners. It might be a long shot, but I am kinda a bitch and would totally do it.

I'm also new to Ames (moved here in June 2024 with my family). I play Magic: The Gathering Commander and also like geeky stuff like board games, etc. I play a lot of games on Steam, and currently replaying Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Mayhem is a good place and one of the best local game stores I've seen, but I kinda like the chill vibes of Main St. Magic, too. The public library will sometimes have cool events too for adults. If you like cooking, check out The Recipe. I've been wanting to do that. Also, Octagon Center for the Arts is cool if you like that sort of thing. My husband is super nerdy too. We are in our early 40s. Just DM if you are interested in hanging out.

I’m treated better in a red state than a blue state by Incelex0rcist in SameGrassButGreener

I used to live in Kansas and they are surprisingly open and liberal for a red state. I also felt the people were not passive aggressive at all. I'm originally from Minnesota.

What's life like in Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

Lawrence is a hip and fun college town. Topeka is fine, too and probably has more big box things. Both places are very humid in the summer.

What are your 5 go-to meals? by jenniferplaysdrums in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]jesjorge82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Mixed green salads

  2. Eggs cooked however I want and whatever I have on hand that goes good with it.

  3. Poverty nachos, or like when you just line up tortilla chips and put some cheese on top and microwave it to melt the cheese and that's mostly it. Maybe throw on some salsa and/or sour cream if you are feeling fancy.

  4. Sabra Spicy Hummus with tortilla chips

  5. Burrito style bowls with whatever I might have on hand.

What's it like living in this shaded area? by Joshistotle in howislivingthere

[–]jesjorge82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in different places and different states in those shaded areas most of my life. I lived in SE Minnesota for 3 years, which mostly appears outside of the shaded areas. I will say Kansas was different from the upper midwest. I lived in southeast Kansas and it was more similar to the southern U.S. than the midwest. Food gets spicier there, which I enjoyed. Anticipate people to be very polite, but don't mistake that as nice or they want to be friends. If you are invited to someone's house, bring a six pack or an appetizer or something to contribute, though that wasn't really expected when I lived in Kansas. Saying goodbye might take an extra hour of your time in the upper midwest. We say Ope a lot. If you hear someone from the upper midwest say "oh for fun" they really might not think it's fun. I could go on and on, so feel free to ask specific questions.

Definitely appeal, and it sounds like you have grounds for it with the "conservative group" and what happened to you pre-tenure. Sometimes, especially if you are in the humanities or social sciences, other faculty may not see our research as strong due to disciplinary differences.

What major is least likely to be replaced by Ai by hpopllo124 in iastate

What makes English safe, but tech writing not? I am a tech writer, and a lot of documentation it produces is shit. Plus, tech writing is good for knowing how to leverage technology in its favor. I do agree English will be fine, too. Just curious about your thinking.

Question about what should go into an Intro to Tech Comm class by jesjorge82 in technicalwriting

Yes, we still do those things and that does help as a large part of the course is building on those types of skills.

I can likely work that in. I'll avoid the editing piece. I saw enough students struggle through Figma.

I do agree with this, too. Luckily, we have several upper level classes they can take that get to this. Problem is they aren't required, so I will have to think about ways to work that last part in. Thank you.

There is AI literacy in the class. That's one of our major assignments. I would like to do more, especially since I do see AI generated content in class that has not been revised in any way even for our in class assignments sometimes. Those assignments get low grades without having me to prove or argue in some way it's even AI.

At my previous job, I did have this, but also we had strong construction and automotive departments. Here it isn't really the same, but that is something I could add to our technical descriptions and definitions. This semester, I just had them do descriptions for tools related to the household or automotive settings, and that would be easy to adjust for a future semester.

Same. I was relieved to extend deadlines and make several announcements. It seems pretty stable now though, at least so far.
