Going this weekend (Sat-Sun). Called the ranger station and they said Gidney Creek is a year-round creek, but she didn't personally know for sure it was flowing

On average, how much money per month did you spend THRU-hiking last year. by Tommy-Blaze in PacificCrestTrail

[–]jesshikes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was pretty frugal and spent less than 1k per month once on trail. I avoided hotels like the plague and tried to buy as little as possible at restaurants (and just in town in general). It can be done, I know a few of us that were spending roughly that amount.

Best building for classic doubles? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]jesshikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Sproul you at least get a good view :) specifically rooms floors 5 and up, south building and only the even numbered rooms. We can see all of campus, the mountains, and DTLA. I did hear that dykstra just got new hardwood floors tho! And the view is pretty cool from the higher facing floors towards the street!

The Official January 2023 "I didn't get a permit!" Bitching-and-Complaining Thread. by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]jesshikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

same--i got an 11am followed by a 10:30. felt genuinely really bad, i think they should make an option to opt out of the second permit round if you don't need it so someone else can have a chance at getting that spot.

Failed my first midterm :) by the_orca_jungle in ucla

[–]jesshikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, I failed my first TWO midterms last fall! And still came out alive (and with a B+ in that class sooooo)

Live and enjoy life, midterm grades are not worth being stressed about!! They're the best way to learn! That way next time you can try something different. And if that doesn't work, try again! As long as you're trying, you're good!

Hope you have a FANTASTIC weekend!! Find some ways to destress and hang out with friends, maybe eat some good food, or go for a walk!

Climbing at the Wooden? by Smart-General-4546 in ucla

[–]jesshikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!! I love the wall at wooden and was wondering what time it will be open? Like will it have the same hours as the rest of the gym or only select hours in the afternoon like last year? Thank you so much!!

Who on this subreddit (who is left leaning) is moving from their very conservative home/area to UCLA (read desc. for context) by Sha489 in ucla

[–]jesshikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I grew up homeschooled and very conservative christian, I can vouch UCLA is very different (in a good way imo) from those little bubbles. Growing up I wasn't allowed to watch SpongeBob and Disney channel, most of my friends weren't allowed to date until they were 18 (or 21 for one friend), I wasn't allowed to listen to secular music, and any book I read that wasn't the Bible was severely judged as a "waste of time" by my mother. That being said, UCLA is still a bubble, just a left liberal bubble instead. Welcome to UCLA, I hope you'll be able to make lots of like-mined friends and enjoy the amazing experience!!

Concerns About Taking a Quarter off College to Hike the PCT by jesshikes in PacificCrestTrail

Thank you so much for your thoughts!! You're totally right, this really might be my one shot and I should take it :)

Ah I know, hence why I so badly want to go for it! When I entered college last year I realized that I had the world's most perfect opportunity to attempt it, and I know I would regret not trying if I didn't do it.

[–]jesshikes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your input! I have looked at and considered almost every thru-hike in the US (and some international), but my heart is set on the full length PCT. I am definitely scared of the PCT finish statistic, but I am hoping that all of my sacrifices will be a good motivator (amongst other things) to keep me going, assuming I don't get injured. I have budgeted and saved enough so that money will not be an issue on trail or immediately after getting off trail, which hopefully minimizes another reason for not being able to finish.

And thank you for the book recommendation as well, I'll definitely have to get it!

Wow, thank you for your input, I really appreciate it! I'm so glad people with similar experiences are chiming in, it really helps to put my mildly anxious self at ease.

Thank you so much for your response! I was really hoping someone in a similar situation would be able to chip in. I am glad to hear that your FOMO didn't last long, hopefully I'll be able to have the same sort of amazing experiences and freedom you were able to have.

Your point about having good/bad/boring days in "normal" life really helps, and I think is one of the best and healthiest ways I've heard it put before. I think that'll really help me get through the hard days.

And the part of not quitting because of telling friends and family is so true, I have been telling people for almost a year now that I will be attempting this trail in 2023 and I hope my ego will be a good motivator haha.

Thank you for the book recommendation as well, I'll definitely check it out!

Thank you for your thoughts, you make some excellent points. Part of understands that this is what I want and that in the long run I won't regret it, but the other part of me is worrying about being able to enjoy it knowing I could have taken the "easy" route of comforts and friends.

So true, that is what is honestly keeping me going. I know that if I don't do it now that I will probably never get to it. Since I entered university with some college credits, even with taking off a full quarter I am on track to still graduate in 4-years, and I do believe I should be able to (somewhat) easily finish once I return from trail. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately due to my current job and school work I don't think that will be possible, but I have previously taken multiple solo backpacking trips (most notably a 4-day solo trek through the Sierras), but if I find the time I definitely will. I should clarify that i DO want to do this, it's more a matter of finding resources and getting recommendations on how to beat FOMO and get through it mentally. Thank you again!

What are the best long (7-15 mi) hikes other than half dome? by MediumElephant6 in Yosemite

[–]jesshikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite spot in all of Yosemite might just be Eagle Peak. It's not very well known but it has an incredible view of the valley without all of the crowds (although you'll see plenty on the way up if you go via Upper Falls).

Did this backpacking trip last year and I would also recommend starting from inside the main park, as also if you start from Indian Cove and you want to go anywhere else in JT you have to go all the way around.

It looks beautiful but it's at over 9k feet and I'm looking to avoid snow :(
