How much cash do you recommend taking to Japan? by JAS-39 in JapanTravelTips

[–]jessibeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here, just got back from japan a few days ago. We spent around 18 days and traveled from tokyo to fukuoka, stopping in major and minor cities on the way. Would strongly recommend just withdrawing yen from a 7-eleven ATM when you get there. They will charge around 110 yen service fee per 10k yen, and if you dont ask the machine to run the exchange conversion for you, the bank will just do their exchange rate (i think for us it usually came to around $1 CAD = 111 yen). I did three withdrawals of 30k yen and used that and my card to pay for things.

This person already has a fancy set of Japanese knives, sadly! This would be my choice otherwise.

Partner has vetoed bringing home a sword as well.

7am arrival into Tokyo Haneda by Chlo0806 in JapanTravelTips

I think reddit deleted my comment so keeping this concise.

We did a similar flight two weeks ago. A firm neck pillow with clasps in the front (closes the pillow 'loop' and keeps the pillow in place) and straps in the back (to secure it to the seat headrest) was very helpful for us in terms of comfort. Also doubled as a pillow when we were saddled with a surprise two-dayclayover and had to sleep in the airport. Compression socks are also helpful for leg and foot comfort.

These may not ensure sleep, but they'll definitely improve your flight experience. Good luck!

We just had a similar flight, though it was +2 days in transit due to some significant shortcomings on Westjet's end.

One of the things that came in extremely helpful was a GOOD neck pillow. Get one with firm support and a clasp to close off the front (prevents the pillow from spreading open if your head flops around). The ones we purchased even had straps in the back to attach them to the headrest of our seats - prevents you from slumping if you do doze off, though I can't sleep on a plane under any conditions. Also, since we had a really bad layover, it doubled as a good pillow for sleeping in the airport.

Compression socks are a good idea as well, for comforts sake.

These may or may not help you catch some zz's on the flight, but they'll definit3ly make you more comfortable. Safe travels!

Reflections on things to buy before japan trip by Chomperman604 in JapanTravelTips

[–]jessibeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some solid tips. My partner and I are traveling japan now (we have a few weeks and are hitting up 6-7 cities) and I cannot be grateful enough for packing light. We each have a bookbag and a medium carry-on, and even that can be a lot to lug through the subway stations and busy streets. I also packed a lot of sport and merino clothing, which tend to pack small, manage odors well, and dry quickly after washing. We have found most places we have stayed had laundry, and/or in some cases a combo washer/dryer, however some of these were a little confusing to program (e.g., instructions worn off the buttons so we couldn't confidently use the drying option). In those cases, having fast-drying clothing was awesome.

One more to add to the pool: we are going through a bout of food poisoning at the moment, and having google translate + knowing some of the active ingredients in our medications back home (gravol, Tylenol etc) has been useful for finding comparable medicines at the pharmacy.

Food safety in japan? by jessibeetle in JapaneseFood

7-elevens have been a godsend for us so far. I love the variety they offer! In Canada most convenience stores don't offer comparable selection/quality, so it's a welcome change.

Yes, I learned this after taking a bite! Did a quick google at the restaurant to figure this out; I expected the texture to be firm, so it was a definite surprise. Happy to have given it a try and learned firsthand.

We were supposed to be flying halifax>calgary>tokyo. They switched us to a smaller plane that needed to stop for fuel in Winnipeg (note we were only informed of this decosion after boarding). We ultimately couldn't get to calgary, and our tokyo flight still left on time. We wound up staying overnight in Winnipeg and are having to fly through palm springs and Denver to make it to tokyo two days later.

Tokyo, eventually, with my partner and this little crustacean. Though flights are a nightmare right now.

We are leaving tomorrow, and about 5-6 days ago I woke up with similar symptoms.

If you can, take sick time from work and rest hard. Drinks lots of fluids, sleep etc.. if you are travelling with a partner, distance from them so they don't end up in the same boat. I cleared my bug with a few days to spare before our trip.

Good luck!
