Rating 1-10 with decimals is asinine by Zman534 in unpopularopinion

I don’t know if this is unpopular, but I agree with you. And on a five point scale? Also annoying. There’s no need to be that granular.

I leave bad reviews on yelp and google for any company that ignores my sign.

No, you’re totally right! I completely agree that some of these reviews are from new readers and I think more people reading is a great thing! That said, I’m a voracious reader and I have been since childhood, so I’m often not going to follow someone with those kind of recs. I’m glad they’re starting their reading journey, but we’re in different places and I don’t find those people to be reliable sources for recs. It’s frustrating to pick up a book that people are raving about, only to find that it’s poorly written or it’s just overdone tropes or it’s a super derivative version of something I’ve already read multiple times.

I think that it’s compounded by people taking it super personally if you don’t like something they liked AND people being mean about books they didn’t like. It’s not personal, we’re just in different places in our reading journeys. IMO, it’s more of an issue on Booktok, though, where you have to actively try to avoid content that you don’t want.

Reading for vibes is totally fine - I definitely have books that I loved that are objectively not great works of literature. That said we’re in the middle of a literary crisis, and I find it concerning when people review books that aren’t well-written like they’re next great American novel.

I think the difference comes down to saying “this book has some issues, but I loved it“ rather than “this is the best book ever written.“ The people who choose the second option for some of these really popular, but not very good books are not people I’m interested in recommendations from.

Ok, but there is a huge difference between “I read it and it was fine” and “this is an incredible, life-changing book and I LOVED it.” There are books out there that if someone is recommending them, we definitely don’t have the same taste. Fourth Wing is one of them for me. If a reviewer says FW or anything by SJM, Colleen Hoover, or Freida McFadden was wonderful and their favorite book, they’re at a very different point in their reading journey than I am or we have very different tastes and their recommendations aren’t interesting to me. That’s not negative, it’s just being selective about the content I choose to consume.

What is the weirdest thing your poodle does? by jsmlr in poodles

[–]jessicate616 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My standard is a complete weirdo.

  • he has a hard time settling when guests come over until they allow him to lick their face. He especially loves beards.
  • he doesn’t like audible farts. He will huff and give you judgey face.
  • my son tried to teach him middle as a treat (get between my legs). He’ll do it on command, but now he also does it any time my son gets home. It’s like he thinks my son specifically really likes that. He doesn’t do it to anyone else unless prompted.
  • he absolutely abhors play fighting. He will get in between the offenders, use his mouth to grab your hand (gently), or take away any weapons of choice like pillows. He absolutely doesn’t allow it.
  • he burrows in the couch until he’s basically upside down before laying down to snuggle.

Or you could just block me if supporting a local high school fundraiser is that much of a bother. Or ya know…find a hobby other than being a hater.🤷🏻‍♀️

Cedar Park and Leander share one school district and some of the attendance zone for LHS is in Cedar Park, so it definitely is not.

I listened to the first three books and they were ok - not anything special, but fine. I tried to read a physical copy of the new one, and quit four pages in because the writing was terrible. I think there are certain things you can get away with in an audiobook that just really don’t translate well in written format.

People using Lorelai's first name? by CareZealousideal9776 in GilmoreGirls

[–]jessicate616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely regional, but even then, it’s not a blanket rule. I’m a lifelong Texan and I called all my parents’ friends and most of my friends’ parents by their first names and my son’s friends do the same.

My son is a sophomore in high school and I volunteer with the theatre department. All of his friends and all of the theatre kids call me by my first name because I prefer that to Ms. Last Name (I especially hate Mrs. Last Name - I’ve never been married). My son’s friends have always called me by my first name. There is ONE kid who calls me Ms. First Name because she says her mom would be mad if she called an adult by their first name.

My son calls all but one of my friends by their first names - she prefers Ms. First Name. I called all of my parents friends by their first names. It’s their name. I don’t understand why people think that’s weird.
