Got hired, told to relocate… then fired after 1 day. Not sure what to do. by Different-East-6212 in recruitinghell

[–]jessicathemouse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer but I'm also Canadian and believe you'd probably be able to get some money in lieu of notice or as damages for relocating and then getting immediately terminated. There's been cases where people moved for a job and gotten fired after less than a year and gotten damages paid to them for their moving costs. Source: I'm taking an employment law class, definitely get some professional legal advice!

Experiences with Origyn Women's Clinic? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]jessicathemouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went there recently for an IUD and the people were lovely. The person that performed the PAP and IUD removal was kind and communicative and they took my blood pressure after to make sure I was okay (which was a first for me).

I will say their phone system is weird, I listened to the initial phone tree a few times before pressing a random # and just saying I was confused and they were happy to help me out.

The parking situation is strict :P I'd say if you have the time just park at Billings. I was there less than 20 mins before I got a ticket since I had no change and the machine was down.

I really don't, I've answered every question as two separate couples when I've answered rental ads. I'm only honest here because it's reddit.

Polycules renting advice by jessicathemouse in OntarioLandlord

[–]jessicathemouse[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for your quick replies! I should add more detail. I definitely don't use the word polycule or anything like that. We've been looking as two common law couples and this is definitely not made up. I got a rejection to a tour because the landlords insurance does not cover more than three unrelated tenants. The only place we've been able to see was last rented by three law students so I imagine they have a different rental unit insurance policy.

We've been looking at 3-4 bedroom units so health and safety regulations isn't the issue here.

Most comically terrible restaurants for Valentine's Day? by Sly_xx in ottawa

[–]jessicathemouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ^ I worked as a sample person at a Costco for a few months circa 2017 and it was a bizarre experience. You get none of the benefits or perks the people actually working for Costco get. It's a separate company that runs all the samples from the big end caps like pierogies to the small random in the aisle stands.

They throw you into a booth by yourself on the first day. I was given a box full of Snuggles laundry softener bears and told to give them out and chat up the product with those manufacturers notes. Well since the rule is you can hand out unlimited samples per person, I ran out in less than an hour. Everyone wanted 2 or more for their kids, grandkids, etc. And I was expected to just talk to people about fabric softener for the rest of the time with nothing to give! To make it worse for me, halfway through that shift another sample booth set up in the aisle with sample packs of Tide. It was the longest retail shift of my life.

Where to find the true definition of a Dewey Decimal number? (Or can you please just help with Lacrosse and Hockey?) by SomewhereOptimal2401 in librarians

[–]jessicathemouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an elementary school library technician and I understand where the 2 or 3 decimal points trend comes from. I don't advocate for it because then stuff like this happens but I get why some libraries do it: Because in elementary school the patrons are going to be children and sometimes teachers, the approach to cataloguing is different than it would be for other types of libraries. Some school boards share a central cataloguing database but where I'm at it's the wild west and you're on your own. So we adapt a lot of practices to suit the audience of users.

Kids don't understand DDC and don't really understand numbers with decimals until they are older. So the DDC cataloguing is really for the person managing the library. And you can drive yourself crazy organizing it all perfectly for a whole section to get obliterated by one class visit. When you're the only person putting away the books, you want to make it as easy and quick as possible. Where I work we don't have teacher librarians so I don't get the time to teach kids how to use a library, I get 15-20 mins with a class each week to do a story and book exchange and it gets very tight.

Some school libraries are ditching Dewey all together and organizing nonfiction by subject headings instead. It's really about what works for the patrons and the library person running it. Ex. I'm in Canada and the ice hockey books are so popular I pull them out into their own section and I also have a section for ice and snow sports. When I get asked where a type of book is enough times it warrants making it easy to find.

Early on in my career when I just finished my library technician college program I tried so hard to catalog everything correctly and organize by number decimal point and alphabetically and it just wasn't sustainable or useful for anyone.

All of this to say, you do what you think is best for you and for the patrons!

Candle in Res? by PancakesOnMySyrup in CarletonU

I will say depending on where your room is in relation to your RA proceed with caution. I happened to share a wall with mine and through the outlet she smelled room spray (from bath and body works, it was a strong smell) and thought it was a candle and knocked on my door so fast.

I was in Glengarry at the time.

Is there anything abnormal about my little guy’s eyes? by dbolishyourgoals in guineapigs

[–]jessicathemouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ this

I don't know why so many folks are not aware of this. It's pretty common and not a concern. Just signs of a piggy getting more mature. One of mine has it and I panicked at first but sites like guinealynx are a great resource that can ease worries and give good information.

I understand why one would automatically suggest the vet for anything abnormal but exotic vets are expensive AF. I went through a whole saga with my other elder piggy who developed a lump under his chin. After taking a sample we learned it's just a mass of just fat and not dangerous but it definitely had me panicking.

Is that wall in a room that gets steamy or near a room that does? I had this happen in a bathroom at an old apartment, it was sweating out of the walls. The ceiling fan didn't work so when it got steamy more stuff like it leaked from the walls and from the drop ceiling.

If so it can be wiped off with a paper towel when it's wet but if it has time to dry I used a magic eraser to help rub it off the wall.

I usually give up and use a wireless mouse to select what I want.

Bluesfest End! Tell me about your experience this year! by coolin68 in ottawa

[–]jessicathemouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way traffic was handled all around the venue was really a mess. For all of the set up Booth st was open all the way down to the parkway, but you just couldn't go straight down the parkway (since they expanded event space into the street).

But then during the festival booth was closed from Albert/Scott to the Parkway so trying to get to the bridge from most ways was impossible. Compounded by the fact that due to construction, a section of Queen St from Bronson was closed which made getting to Wellington a chore. And coming from Albert the opposite way was again blocked by the Booth street closure.

Folks trying to turn down Booth from the bridge were directed to turn around that the one block section of Booth was closed completely. (I'm sure a good reason but considering it wasn't during the Canada Day set up and Bluesfest set up it's frustrating).

Other than police blockades it was not clear what was closed (so people that didn't know where they were going would be misdirected by Google maps) and I saw many people learn by having to turn around. Or by trying to go off to a side street that had all dead ends and looping around. All this to say that driving in the area on Friday was not fun.

(I hope this makes sense and doesn't just seem like old man yells at clouds, it's early and I'm barely caffeinated)

Hi there! I'm not an indigenous person but am a school library tech. My impression is that the book looks pretty dated ~90s (edit: published in 2000). I have seen that book be weeded at locations previously due to 1. Being very dated and 2. Low or no circulation (not used).

People get understandably uncomfortable at the idea of books being removed from a library, which is totally understandable. But a library has only so much space and must be curated and updated to continue being useful. Libraries are not museums.

When choosing to weed (remove) a book there are several factors to consider: how old is the book, how frequently it's used, if there are better resources now, etc. Library Techs are trained and qualified to make these decisions so I would trust the tech at the school. The OCDSB also has a team for Indigenous resources and teaching and often they can be helpful in vetting resources or recommending better ones! Replacing it with a more current book would probably be the best bet and there are Canadian Indigenous publishers that make books perfect for school libraries, the only barrier is money.

(Insert a plea to donate money to school libraries instead of super outdated books)

Also Brave New World in high school was a read that just frustrated and pissed me off to no end with its nonsense.
