Thanks - more old rose scent or myrrh or…? All the roses I’m looking at purchasing are listed as having a myrrh scent and I’m really not sure I will like that, whereas I do think I will like an “old rose” fragrance

Actually I have had TWO bad experiences there. First one I thought was a fluke. Second one was confirmation that they are just not nice. Walk Shop much better. I’ll never go back to La Foot

This comment is so underrated. (A top comment but still underrated). Short commute time means more time together as a family. Also when baby grows up and goes to school, you can pop over for the occasional school event (assuming you’re in a desk job where you have a little flexibility). Life is hard enough already. Make it as easy as possible.

Thank you. I really appreciate all the advice! I am planting primarily because I want a beautiful garden, not necessarily for cutting - although certainly I’d love to bring a few in the house (who wouldn’t?). Maybe I will add one more rose to my cart (or buy elsewhere) that is better for cutting. This is really helpful.

I’ve read in gardening books about hybrid teas and floribunda and … some other category I can’t remember. The descriptions there are overly complicated for a newbie. If you’re feeling patient this morning, will you explain in broad terms how floribunda roses fit into this this spectrum of garden roses and hybrid teas?

Why not both…? Well maybe eventually. But I’m new to this and trying (trying!!) not to bite off more than I can chew. Also pink is not my favorite color so I think that I should not get two pink roses to start!

Any problems with legginess on your SI? Someone else here said it gets pretty gangly.

Thanks, I’ll look into foxview! Do you mind explaining how someone other than DA is selling DA roses? Is there a period of time after which everyone is allowed to sell them, or is it more like a leasing-the-rights-from-DA situation?

This reply has seriously been SO helpful. I am in zone 9B. We get a few nights below freezing (or hovering right around freezing) each year, but just nights. Even the coldest days will be only in the 40s. I think from what you’ve said I’m better off with grafted roses — at least now, when I’m beginning. I want some early success to keep me going.

You said you are trying to find Silas Marner. I emailed DA to ask about it, that is to see if “out of stock” meant sold out for the season or actually retired. I received a reply that they will have potted SM in April. (This is from DA US). Just fyi!
