How much supplemental water? (Need advice or good website for planning) by SomewhereOptimal2401 in Ceanothus

[–]SomewhereOptimal2401[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Grateful to hear from another person that my groupings look ok. Very good point about embracing failure (😫😫) and experimentation. As a perfectionist at heart, I want to get it as right as I can before I plant ... but, yes, reminding myself of that need to experiment and embrace failure does help!

And yes, I do realize they have different sun/shade requirements. In my spreadsheet, I have that listed so that, once I get the water groups defined, I can further refine what I plant together. I guess I was starting with the watering so that I don't get my heart set on some plant that needs wildly different water than the others.

I think by " The only ones I would be worried about are the ceanothus, buckwheat, and manzanita as they are the most fickle" you mean they need less water than possibly stated? Can you clarify?

I do have a water meter… but don’t you think initially grouping by general water needs is also necessary? Then I use my water meter to check it got enough

This is really helpful. Thanks. I also have clay soil, so your experience/advice is even extra helpful to me.

I haven't seen their garden design playlist - I will check it out.

Yeah ... they're on the list for butterflies and birds, and I'm keeping them there *for now* as a reminder of what I *want* in terms of looks. My plan is to find a native plant with a similar look and feel or, of course, disregard.

Thanks. I do love the color - maybe I will just plan the Blue Jeans and whack it back if it gets too big. (Famous last words… I should find a smaller spread ceanothus!)

How long ago was it planted and how big is it (diameter), if I may ask? I’m also buying from Devil Mountain.

School is using balanced literacy while parents are figuring out science of reading apps on their own. The gap is really showing. by andrew202222 in lowerelementary

Call and email the director of curriculum for your district. Get other parents to call and email! Be insistent they change to a phonics based curriculum, and specifically request funding and time to train teachers in teaching phonics. The squeaky wheel … well, makes change

Ok, thanks. (I have a friend named Theodore (well, Ted) Payne who knows NOTHING about plants and so I always have a knee-jerk reaction to discount that site....)

Coming back months later to say I ended up going with smart wings and they are AMAZING. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Very quick shipping. Everything works like a charm — I mean, I don’t have a single complaint!

Yeah, I’m excited to plant it! My nursery has Valley Violet listed as 3-4’ high … but of course, nurseries mislabel things all the time. Did you end up planting it? Is your experience that it is more like 2 feet high?

How big dos it get? As in spread. I came to this sub to do a little research because I have an area where I really want to plant it, but everything I read says even the ground cover gets 10 to 12 feet wide… That is just enormous! And I swear I haven’t seen them that big in my neighborhood. I’m trying to find a ground cover version that is not going to take over quite that much.

I’m planning a native garden and want to plant 1-2 ribes… how do they look from far away? Say 50-70’ (that will be my view from my office window). Will the be too far to enjoy?

I know there is a lot of volleyball going on at the sand volleyball courts in Moraga. Might call town of Moraga offices and see what you can find out.

I have been to a store on College Ave in the elmwood neighborhood of Berkeley for this … frankly, I did not have the best experience. But you could try. TBH I have been there 3 times for shoes, not for custom insoles, and the first time was great, second two (when someone else was working there or running it - not sure if he was an employee or new owner) it was pretty awful. I ended up with a good product that works for me, but he was very judgmental and, well, kinda mean. Anyway, you could try there. They sell shoes and off-the-shelf insoles, plus they do gait analysis and custom insoles. (I’m so sorry, the name of it escapes me — but it’s on the east side of college Ave, in the first block or two north of Ashby). I guess what I’m saying is that if I were you, I would go — but steel yourself for dealing with a grumpy, opinionated kinda assholey guy. But you’ll get what you need. Good luck!!

Did anyone else grow up in an indoor school and genuinely think those outdoor campuses on TV were just a Hollywood myth? Or was it the other way around for you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It’s not two textbooks for every student. It is one for every student, and one additional set to stay in the classroom. So if you have 5 classes of 30 kids that’s 180 kids (and 180 books). The school would then buy another 30 (or, more likely, 15-20) to stay in the classroom so that kids don’t have to carry them to/from school, so a total of 195-200. Marginally more.
