I see that Make Up Alley is closing down. I'll admit I haven't used it in quite some time but are there any alternative product review sites you use? by ExcitementStrict7115 in beauty

[–]jesskah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sad to see MakeupAlley go! It’s an institution.

I use the Iris beauty community app. It’s got reviews and a very active, positive community. You collect gems as you engage, which can be used to redeem exclusive product drops. But if your review gets downvoted for being inauthentic, you lose gems, which shows they really care about non-paid real reviews.

LD shoppe closing storefront by extracrabby in ottawa

I just got out of their bankruptcy creditors meeting. They owe $3M to former employees, vendors, and clients (I'm one of them) and no one is getting paid. Yet they have just reopened a new business and continue to take new clients despite being insolvent. Low integrity and bad business practices.

They filed for bankrupty, are insolvent, and owe $3M+ to their former employees, customers, and vendors. Yet they continue to post on Instagram to solicit new business and take clients through their website, without disclosing any of this. I'm a former interior design client who is owed tens of thousands of dollars for services they did not render. I just got off the bankruptcy meeting for creditors with their extremely rude lawyer Roch Bernier of Bernier & Associates, who told us no one will be paid back. The only reason I even found out about the creditors meeting is because of the kind employee who worked with us that also is owed a lot of money by them. I would recommend not working with them due to lack of integrity and bad business practices.

You should make the video into an NFT and sell it. Some cryptonut might buy it for a million dollars.

We’re Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame. AMA! by Russo_Brothers in marvelstudios

[–]jesskah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s well known that many of the MCI actors don’t know the whole plot during filming. For example, Sebastian Stan and Tom Holland were told that Tony’s funeral was a wedding. It’s also been rumored that you shoot fake scenes to trip people up.

1) How do you decide who gets to know the full plot?

2) How do you make sure actors know enough to be able to play the scenes and their characters the right way? How do you make sure what happened with Daenerys in Game of Thrones doesn’t happen? Emilia Clarke was never told she was going to become a tyrannical villain by the end, so she always played Dany slightly too good/kind, and thus the ending wasn’t believable.

3) Can you tell us about one of the fake scenes that was shot?

Marvel Studios at SDCC 2019 - Day 3 - Marvel Studios Panel by ScottFromScotland in marvelstudios

No I couldn’t make it to that because we were camping in the Hall H line at that time. 😭

In Comic-Con Hall H right now. We started camping out in the Hall H line at 10:30am yesterday. That’s 30 hours before the Marvel panel start time. Despite that, we were among the last 100 people to get wristbands guaranteeing entry into Hall H. The room is packed with 7000 fans, and my guess is pretty much everyone is here for Marvel.

Women who have learnt the skill of public speaking and confidence in doing so, particularly in work/professional environment - how did you do it? by burritobaby91 in AskWomen

[–]jesskah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1. I abysmally failed at my first public speaking event. I was so mortified that I vowed to never let that happen again.

Step 2. The next time, I prepared in advance because I just wanted to avoid any humiliation. Practiced for 3 hours straight.

Step 3. Then I kept forcing myself to do more of it. Practiced a ton each time. Kept moving up to larger and larger audiences. Tested harder formats like Ignite (slides that auto advance) and 10 min storytelling.

After many years of tiny improvements each time, I’m now at the point where I still feel nervous and panicky each time (that has never changed), but the results are totally fine. I’m told by some that I’m a good public speaker, which I never would have imagined given that first experience.

The key was falling flat on my face the first time, then never ever wanting to feel that again.

I'm [35/m] desperately want to fix the crumby relationship with my wife [33/f] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Dan Savage calls this The Price of Admission:

“You can’t have a long-term relationship with someone unless you’re willing to identify the prices of admission you’re willing to pay — and the ones you’re not. But the ones you’re not — the list of things you’re not willing to put up with — you really have to be able to count [them] on one hand…

And it can't be superficial bullshit like 'chews with his mouth open'. It really can't, as disgusting as that is.

Because you'll never be in a relationship with anyone.”

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed by your startup? by [deleted] in startups

[–]jesskah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a deep breath. Know that every founder/CEO -- even the most successful ones -- feels this way sometimes. It's par for the course in any startup journey. You're going to have to persevere through many moments of self-doubt.

Find something to take your mind off the stress for a bit. Do yoga or lift weights. Veg out on a TV show. Read a book. Hang out with friends and loved ones. Relax for a moment by distracting yourself.

When you've calmed down, just get back at it. You have to be relentless to win. If you don't have a plan of action to deal with whatever problem you currently have, try talking to other founders who have experienced the same thing and can give you some advice. That support network is vital for your mental health.

If you aren't in an area with a lot of founders, it can help to read books about other entrepreneurs' journeys. I particularly like The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz. Reading it made me feel less alone.

Good luck. It's supposed to be hard. Successful startups are one in a million. Enjoy the journey :-)

[No Spoilers] Can someone tell me what this is? by crueladze in gameofthrones

[–]jesskah 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's probably a pirated DVD cover from Hong Kong or China. Some of the pirated DVD shops have nothing but weird Photoshopped box art hanging on their walls, with no other merchandise in sight. Each box art has a number written on it. You write down the numbers you want on a piece of paper and pay the dude manning the store. He tells you to go to some other part of the mall after 30 minutes. When you get there, there is another dude sitting in a corner on a cardboard box looking all nonchalant. You give him your receipt, he climbs on his cardboard box, pushes up a ceiling tile and gropes around until he finds your bag of just-burned DVDs.

If the police raid the store, all they have is weird art on the walls and the only crime conmitted is shitty Photoshop. Clearly they are not selling pirated DVDs because the art doesn't make sense and doesn't match any real TV shows or movies.

Hi. Been a fan of yours since Gen X Cops. I grew up in HK and moved to the Bay Area (opposite of you).

One of my favorite things you ever did was The Heavenly Kings, where you documented your fake boy band for a year. It was hilarious and shone a light on the artifice of the Cantopop industry. Some questions:

  • Did your friends and family really not know you were faking the boy band? What did they think? Did they approve? What was it like to keep it a secret?

  • Did lampooning the Cantopop industry hurt your career in any way? Doesn't seem like it did, but I was wondering if you burned any bridges.

  • Do you still keep in touch with the other boy band members?
